I used to believe a packed calendar means a full life. My days were booked up, well ahead of time, for dinners out, exercise classes, trips to the cinema — activities that I knew to be beneficial or rewarding.
I had been determined to make work less central to my life: I couldn’t burn out when I had so much else going on, I reasoned. But when the time came to follow through on my plans, I tended to find that I had been overly optimistic — not only about how much it was possible, but also about my enthusiasm to do so.
As my mood and energy levels continued to worsen, social occasions increasingly felt like another obligation — something I had to do, rather than something I wanted to do. Arriving to have dinner with friends became similar to a work meeting; they registered the same in my calendar.
It eventually dawned on me that the act of scheduling far in advance was robbing me of the opportunity to enjoy myself. I had made these plans from a theoretical standpoint, without allowing for the very real possibility that I would be tired, stressed or just not in the mood.
Moving to Norwich helped me break this habit. In Norwich, nearly everyone I know lives within a half-hour walk of me, with plenty of wonderful cafes, pubs and restaurants in between.
Within months of moving, I rediscovered the joy of free-flow. My days were necessarily emptier, because I had fewer local friends. In the peace and quiet, I came to better understand how I truly liked to spend my time.
I was surprised by how much I benefited from spending more time alone. I found myself having bright ideas and interesting thoughts that I suspect would have failed me had I carried on at breakneck pace.
My newly cleared schedule also meant that, if I finished work for the day and I felt like seeing a film, I could. I started to understand what all those self-help books meant about being your “true self”.
4. Why did the author plan her activities well ahead of time?
A. To ensure she can balance life and work. B. To reflect her time management skills.
C. To make sure her schedule is always full. D. To avoid missing out on social events.
5. Why did the author compare dinner with friends to a work meeting?
A. She found social events a break from work responsibilities.
B. She believed the work meetings could also be enjoyable.
C. She saw the work meetings as a special form of social events.
D. She felt socializing as stressful as dealing with work tasks.
6. How did the move to Norwich affect the author?
A. She felt lonely with fewer friends and social events.
B. She appreciated a more flexible approach to life.
C. She lifted her productivity and finished work sooner.
D. She became busier with more ideas and thoughts.
7. What does the author mean by mentioning “being your ‘true self’” (last paragraph)?
A. Realizing the joy of slowing down the pace of life.
B. Discovering that a lonely life can also be a full life.
C. Finding happiness in following a packed schedule.
D. Making a detailed plan for personal development.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A

Josh Klein is a pioneer in finding creative solutions to one of the world’s most pressing environmental problems: food waste. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately one-third of the food produced worldwide is wasted every year, which amounts to about 1.3 billion tons. Josh, however, isn’t just talking about the problem — he’s actively working to solve it.
Josh Klein founded Spoiler Alert, a startup that helps businesses manage and reduce food waste by connecting surplus food with charitable organizations and food banks. The platform allows companies to sell or donate food that might otherwise go to waste, creating a win-win situation for both businesses and communities in need.
Josh’s journey into the world of food waste innovation began while he was working in the tech industry. He realized that just like many other industries, food production and distribution could benefit from more efficient management. His company, Spoiler Alert, uses technology to provide real-time data to businesses, helping them track food waste and make more informed decisions. By streamlining (优化) food distribution and connecting businesses with organizations in need, Josh’s platform helps to redirect millions of pounds of food away from landfills.
One of the most important aspects of Josh’s approach is the use of technology to solve a real-world problem. Through data analytics and a user-friendly interface, Spoiler Alert has transformed the way companies think about waste. Instead of seeing excess food as a loss, businesses are now able to see it as a valuable resource that can benefit others.
Josh’s work not only reduces food waste but also helps provide food to those who need it most. His platform has already been adopted by large companies in the food industry, and it continues to grow as more businesses recognize the potential of reducing waste while giving back to their communities.
Through his innovation, Josh Klein is showing the world how technology and entrepreneurship (企业家精神) can make a meaningful impact on society. By tackling food waste, he is helping to create a more sustainable future for everyone.

For the first time in Canada, surgeons have successfully carried out the first stage of a procedure involving implanting (植入) a tooth into the eyes of people with a type of severe blindness in the hopes of restoring their vision.
Known as “tooth-in-eye” surgery, the operation was recently carried out in three patients with severe corneal (角膜的) blindness. Tooth-in-eye surgery aims to change that in two surgeries. This first step is the creation of the implant. This requires the removal of one of the patient’s teeth, which is shaved down into a square-like shape with a hole drilled into it that will hold a plastic optical lens The shaped tooth is then placed inside the patient’s cheek, where it stays for around three months to develop new tissue and a blood supply.
Once that’s happened, in the second stage, surgeons remove the implant from the cheek and put it into the eye, where the plastic lens allows light through, restoring the patient’s vision. “It’s like replacing the windscreen on a car when it’s totally frosted over,” Dr Greg Moloney, who led the Canadian surgeries, told the Vancouver Sun.
It might sound a bit unpleasant to put someone’s tooth in their eye, but it actually makes a lot of sense; both the fact that teeth are super hard and that it’s the patient’s own tooth increase the chances that the implant will last long term. “The procedure isn’t completely risk-free, but there is no risk of rejection, because we’re using part of the patient’s own body.”
The patients are set to experience the second surgery later this year. One of those patients, Gail Chapman, was the first to receive the initial surgery and was hopeful of what the procedure could mean for her future. While this was a Canadian first, tooth-in-eye surgery is far from new. It’s been around since the 1960s, when it was pioneered by Italian Professor Benedetto Strampelli, and was later improved into the procedure that it is today.
12. What is involved in the first stage of the “tooth-in-eye” surgery?
A. Placing the plastic lens in the eye.
B. Restoring the patient’s eyesight partly.
C. Removing a patient’s tooth for the implant.
D. Moving the implant from the cheek to the eye.
13. What is the key role of the plastic optical lens in the second-stage surgery?
A. To fix the tooth in the eye. B. To help the eye receive light.
C. To reduce the pain of the patient. D. To accelerate the treatment process.
14. Why does the surgery use the patient’s own tooth?
A. To simplify the surgical procedure.
B. To reduce the risk of implant rejection.
C. To lower the cost of the entire surgery.
D. To make the implant look more natural.
15. What does the author think of the “tooth-in-eye” surgery?
A The surgery has been improved a little.
B. There is a serious danger of infection during the surgery.
C. The surgery will become popular in Canada.
D. The surgery dates back over fifty years.
【答案】12 C 13. B 14. B 15. D

The mental health benefits of spending time in water are well-known. But for some people, water is not a place of freedom — it is a place of fear.
Some may have bad memories of the sea; others worry about not being able to stand up. ____16____ Writing for The Guardian, swimming teacher Jane Greene Pettersson says the fear of“letting go” is something that many people find hard — you can’t hold on to water. When she is working with people who are new to swimming, she asks them to start by getting their faces wet.
Children who are starting swimming lessons are often asked to blow bubbles (气泡) when they put their faces in the water, to show them that when you breathe out you won’t get water in your mouth. ____17____
Others ask people to sit on the side of a pool, put their feet in and move them around a little to get a feel for the water. ____18____ Then get into the water, while still holding on to the ladder.
One of the things that the UK’s National Health Service advises with any fear is to breathe slowly and deeply. ___19___ So, it’s a good idea to begin in the shallow end of the pool and perhaps to choose a time when the pool is not busy.
____20____ It might be too late for us to make it to the Olympics, but we’re never too old to overcome our fears!
A. Adult beginners might also like to try this.
B. The first step is always the hardest, but it’s worth it.
C. But experts say this fear is something that can be overcome.
D. It’s important to be accompanied and build confidence gradually.
E. Even some Olympic swimmers were afraid of water as children.
F. If this works, another step might be climbing down the pool ladder.
G. This is very important because we need to be as calm as possible to stay safe.
C 17. A 18. F 19. G 20. E

由上文“Some may have bad memories of the sea; others worry about not being able to stand up.(有些人可能对大海有不好的回忆;另一些人则担心无法站立)”可知,此处列举了人们害怕水的不同原因,空格处需承接“对水的恐惧”这一话题并引出解决方向。C项“But experts say this fear is something that can be overcome.(但专家表示这种恐惧是可以克服的)”中的“this fear”指代前文提到的对水的恐惧,“can be overcome”引出下文克服恐惧的具体方法,起到承上启下的作用。故选C项。
由上文“Children who are starting swimming lessons are often asked to blow bubbles (气泡) when they put their faces in the water, to show them that when you breathe out you won’t get water in your mouth. (刚开始上游泳课的孩子们经常被要求在把脸伸进水里时吹泡泡,以向他们表明,当你呼气时,你的嘴里不会进水)”可知,此处介绍了针对儿童克服水恐惧的方法,空格处需说明该方法对其他人群的适用性。A项“Adult beginners might also like to try this.(成年初学者或许也可以尝试这种方法)”中的“this”指代前文“blow bubbles”的方法,“Adult beginners”与“Children”形成人群对比,体现方法的通用性,衔接自然。故选A项。
由上文“Others ask people to sit on the side of a pool, put their feet in and move them around a little to get a feel for the water.(还有人建议人们坐在泳池边,把脚放进去轻轻晃动,感受一下水)”及下文“Then get into the water, while still holding on to the ladder.(然后进入水中,同时仍然抓住梯子)”可知,空格处需衔接“感受水”和“进入水”的步骤,且与“ladder(梯子)”相关。F项“If this works, another step might be climbing down the pool ladder.(如果这一步有效,下一步可能是爬下泳池的梯子)”中的“another step”承接上文“put their feet in”的第一步,“climbing down the pool ladder”引出下文“holding on to the ladder”,符合“逐步尝试”的逻辑。故选F项。
由上文“One of the things that the UK’s National Health Service advises with any fear is to breathe slowly and deeply.(英国国家医疗服务体系针对任何恐惧给出的建议之一是缓慢深呼吸)”及下文“So, it’s a good idea to begin in the shallow end of the pool and perhaps to choose a time when the pool is not busy.(所以,最好从泳池浅水区开始,或许选择泳池不拥挤的时候)”可知,空格处需说明“缓慢深呼吸”的重要性,以及后续建议的原因。G项“This is very important because we need to be as calm as possible to stay safe.(这非常重要,因为我们需要尽可能保持冷静以确保安全)”中的“This”指代“breathe slowly and deeply”,“calm”解释了深呼吸的目的,也为下文“选择浅水区、不拥挤时段”的安全建议提供依据,逻辑连贯。故选G项。
由上文“So,it’s a good idea to begin in the shallow end of the pool and perhaps to choose a time when the pool is not busy.(因此,从泳池的浅水区开始,或许再选一个泳池人不多的时间,是个不错的办法)”可知,此处是在给出克服怕水恐惧的具体建议,而空格后“It might be too late for us to make it to the Olympics, but we’re never too old to overcome our fears!(我们或许来不及参加奥运会,但克服恐惧永远不嫌晚!)”

a taste of表示“一种……的体验”,是固定搭配,因此用不定冠词a。故填a。
结合前面的“While most local people are nestled beneath the covers at 3 a.m.” 故填on。
故填and。
故填which。
故填has been recognized。
空处作making的宾语,结合“the perfect day-trip destination for travelers”可知,应用代词it指代前面提到的the village。故填it。
空处作there be句型的主语,被three other similar修饰,名词establishment“机构”符合题意,且“three other”表明establishment需用复数形式。
根据“so little were his earnings”以及空后为完整的句子可知,此处应用so… that… 故填that。

Hi, welcome to my channel! Today, I’m excited to share one of our school’s extracurricular activities — community volunteering. Last weekend, we visited a local nursing home, where we cleaned the rooms, talked with the elderly, and even put on a short performance to brighten their day.

A Snowy Bond
The Gupta family arrived at the snowy hill station of Shimla, their hearts warm with excitement despite the frosty air. The hotel entrance welcomed them with a burning fireplace and the slight woody smell. As Mr. Gupta checked them in, Sia’s eyes lit up with anticipation. “Can I go out to the town and check out the local market?” she asked eagerly.
Her father looked at her with a thoughtful expression. “Only if you take Nisha with you,” he said. Sia sighed quietly. Nisha, with her endless energy and nonstop chatter, was the last person Sia wanted to babysit. “Do I really have to? ” she asked, trying not to sound too annoyed. Mr. Gupta nodded firmly, “Yes. You’re her big sister, and I trust you.”
Unwilling, Sia helped Nisha with her thick winter gloves, coat and scarf, and then the two sisters stepped out into the snowy streets. The town was full of bright lights and cheerful sounds from the market. Booths (摊位) lined the square, selling almost everything. Nisha’s eyes widened as she looked around, being on cloud nine. “Look at that snowman!” she shouted, pointing to a towering snow sculpture.
Sia, however, was focused on something else. Near the market was a booth advertising a snowball throwing competition. The prize was a big stuffed panda. Sia’s breath was caught — it was the prettiest and cutest stuffed panda that she had ever seen. “Let’s go see that booth, Nisha,” she said, and then walked toward the booth.
Sia paid a coin to enter and picked up a snowball. The goal was simple: to hit the middle of the target three times in a row to win the prize. But the middle of the target — a painted wooden one — seemed to laugh at her as her first throw missed completely. Her second throw hit the edge, and the third bounced off the side. Disappointed, she stepped back. The stuffed panda would remain out of reach.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
“Can I try?” a small voice said.

Sia turned red as she held the stuffed panda in her arms.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“Can I try?” a small voice said. Sia turned to see Nisha standing behind her and her hands with gloves holding a coin. “You don’t have to...” Sia said, but Nisha was already handing the coin to the owner. Nisha stepped up, her tiny hands barely holding the snowball. The crowd watched silently as Nisha focused on the target. Her first throw struck the dead center of the target, followed by the second and third. Cheers erupted as the stuffed panda was handed to Nisha. She turned and gave it to Sia with excitement.
Sia turned red as she held the stuffed panda in her arms. Nisha had won it just for her big sister. Sia stared at Nisha, and her throat got tight because of surprise and shame, making it hard to speak. “Thank you,” she finally whispered, throwing her arms around Nisha. The annoyance she had felt earlier melted away. As they walked back hand in hand, Sia glanced at Nisha with newfound admiration. Her little sister wasn’t just a child to look after — she was a thoughtful, caring soul that Sia felt lucky to have.

A To simplify the surgical procedure.
B. To reduce the risk of implant rejection.
C. To lower the cost of the entire surgery.
D. To make the implant look more natural.
15. What does the author think of the “tooth-in-eye” surgery?
A. The surgery has been improved a little.
B. There is a serious danger of infection during the surgery.
C. The surgery will become popular in Canada.
D. The surgery dates back over fifty years.
