What are your parents like? Do they have any strict family rules for you? Do they make you feel stressed? Recently, a mother’s special idea about her kids’ playtime has caught people’s attention online.
Jessi Meeks says every day, her three kids get an hour where they get to do “whatever” they want. She calls it “whatever-makes-you happy hour” .
Meeks’ idea came naturally from one of her kids’ suggestions. “One afternoon, the kids were outside painting and my husband and I were trying to talk and carry on a conversation. My oldest son Cannon looked at me and asked, ‘Can I paint my hands?’ And I said, ‘Whatever makes you happy. You all just do it and be quiet so Mommy and Daddy can talk to each other.’ ” Meeks recalls. “And from then on, around that same time of the day, they would ask if they could do something and we’d be like ‘Sure, whatever makes you happy.’ ”
But Meeks also sets necessary boundaries (界限). “If they start hurting themselves or hurting each other, we step in.” she adds, “And we don’t let them watch TV. ”
Meeks believes the hour of free playtime has been beneficial for her kids. If they make a big mess, she thinks it’s a good chance to teach little ones the practice of tidying up. At the same time, it’s also a great way to allow time for them to explore and play the way they want.

On Oct. 2nd, 2023, Katalin Karikó and her workmate, Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology (生理学) or Medicine. But while both scientists worked hard on the way to the huge success, Karikó had to get over greater difficulties.

We enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house; it must be treated with punctiliousness, with enough careful attention. You must see that it keeps no dirty or destroyed pages.
But books are for use, not for show. You should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, to find them quickly, and then in later years.
Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth. This habit can be developed with every advantage (优势). The best wallpaper is books. They are more varied (不同的) in color and appearance than any wallpaper. They are livelier in design, you are surrounded (包围) with close friends. Books are of the people, for the people. They are part of history and the best part of personality.
Book friends have advantages over living friends. You can enjoy the most truly great society in the world whenever you want it. The great dead are out of our physical reach, and the great living are usually too far to reach. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with great writers such as Shakespeare or Carlyle or Dumas or Dickens. And there is no doubt that in these books you see these men at their best.
They did their best to entertain (娱乐) you and to make a favorable impression. You are necessary to them as an audience (观众) is to an actor, you look into their inside heart.
40.The underlined word “punctiliousness” means “________”.
A.complete calm B.full trust C.great care D.nice review

Can we improve our memory?
When it comes to learning, the ability to memorize always matters. We’ve all been there—staring at a book, hoping that what we study will stick in our mind. Many of us have probably wondered, “Is there any way to improve memory? 43
Students who have tried using word cards know that it is helpful to review what they’ve studied before. 44 They say that trying to retrieve (检索) something from your memory after you have had some time to forget it will make it easier to remember in future. Similarly, studies have shown that taking some time to just do nothing after studying might mean that you can remember things better later. 45 Some think it has to do with the relationship between long-term and short-term memory.
Another study tip is to change between different topics as you study. 46 Connecting them to each other or to images is often considered a good way to remember something. Former world memory champion Jonathan Hancock believes that picturing pieces of information in different locations or connecting them to memorable images can make them easier to remember.
There are also other more things that we can do to improve our memory. Hancock says that being generally organized makes things easier for your brain. 47 People memorize better when they are in a more relaxing environment. So the good news to take from this is that while it may be hard, improving our memory is something we can achieve.
A.It is not clear why this happens.
B.Reviewing is a good way to improve the learning process.
C.This can help you make connections between different ideas.
D.So, why don’t we look at what memory experts say about this?

E.Many other experts also suggest that we should get a lot of rest and exercise.

One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to see i 65 he was getting a pound. After he weighed it, he found that he wasn’t. The baker then took the farmer to the judge (法官).
The judge wanted to know the farmer’s ways to weigh the butter. The farmer replied, “I’m so p 66 that I do not have enough money to buy anything to weigh it. H 67 , I do have a kind of scale (天平).” The judge asked, “Then h 68 do you weigh the butter?” The farmer replied, “Before the baker started buying butter from me, I had bought bread from him. So now every time when I b 69 home the bread from the baker, I put it on the scale and give him the butter of the same w 70 .”
We always get back what we give to others. Whenever you take action, ask yourself this question, “Am I honest?” Honesty or dishonesty can become a habit. Some dishonest people can lie w 71 a red face. Others lie so m 72 that they do not even know what the truth is any more. But who is it bad for? In fact, those who lie will hurt t 73 by their own dishonest behaviour.

根据“Before the baker started buying butter from me, I had bought bread from him”可知,是把黄油卖给面包师,sell“售卖”,根据was可知,此句是一般过去时,动词用过去式,故填(s)old。
65.句意:一天,面包师决定称一称黄油的重量,看看自己是否真的得到了一磅。根据“weigh the butter to see … he was getting a pound”可知,称一称黄油的重量是为了确定重量是否准确,if“是否”,引导宾语从句,故填(i)f。
66.句意:我实在太穷了,以至于根本没有足够的钱去买任何东西来称一称它的重量。根据“I do not have enough money to buy anything to weigh it”及首字母可知,太穷了以至于买不起称,poor“贫穷的”,故填(p)oor。
67.句意:不过,我确实有一种衡量标准。“I do have a kind of scale”与前文是转折关系,此空位于句首,且空格后有逗号隔开,应填副词however表示“然而”,故填(H)owever。
68.句意:那么,你是如何称量黄油重量的呢?这是一个特殊疑问词,此空应填入特殊疑问词。根据“do you weigh the butter”可知,询问称黄油重量的方式,how“如何”,故填(h)ow。
69.句意:所以现在每次我从面包店买回面包后,都会先把它放在秤上称一下重量,然后给他同样重量的黄油。根据“home the bread from the baker”及首字母可知,此处指把面包带回家,bring“带来”,根据now可知,此句用一般现在时,主语是I,动词用原形,故填(b)ring。
70.句意:所以现在每次我从面包店买回面包后,都会先把它放在秤上称一下重量,然后给他同样重量的黄油。根据“give him the butter of the same”及首字母可知,给予同样重量的黄油,weight“重量”,不可数名词,故填(w)eight。
71.句意:有些不诚实的人即使在撒谎时也能面不改色。根据“Some dishonest people can lie …a red face.”可知,不诚实的人在撒谎时“没有脸红”,without“没有”,故填(w)ithout。
72.句意:有些人撒谎太过频繁,以至于他们甚至都不再清楚什么是真相了。根据“Others lie so m… that they do not even know what the truth is any more”可知,此处指撒谎撒得太多,so much“太多”,故填(m)uch。
73.句意:事实上,那些说谎的人会因自己的不诚实行为而伤害到自己。根据“those who lie will hurt”及首字母可知,此处指那些说谎的人会伤害他们自己,此空应填反身代词,故填(t)hemselves。

【答案】例文1
My Treasured Diary
I have a small diary that holds a special place in my heart. It has a simple yet charming appearance. Although its plain cover has become a bit worn over time, it means a lot to me.
I started writing in it when I was in junior high school. I write down my joys, sorrows, dreams, and secrets. It’s like a faithful friend that always listens. Whenever I’m happy or sad, I turn to it. It records my growth and changes. It shows how I have changed from a shy kid to a more confident one. It’s a precious memory box that holds not only my words but also my emotions. Every time I open my diary, I feel I am talking with my closest friend in this world!
I will always cherish it—my treasured diary.
例文2
An Old Toy Bear
I have an old toy teddy bear. It’s not very big but extremely cute. It’s made of soft cotton with brown fur which is a little worn out now. It has two big black eyes and a cute nose.
This teddy bear was given to me by my grandma when I was five. At that time, I was often ill and felt very sad. But whenever I saw this teddy bear, I felt better. My grandma would tell me stories while I held it in my arms. When I had nightmares at night, it was this teddy bear that gave me courage. Now, my grandma has passed away. Whenever I hold this teddy bear, I think of her love and care. In my mind, it’s not just a toy but a symbol of my grandma’s love. Every time I look at it, I remember the warm hugs and sweet smiles from my grandma.
I will always cherish it as it brings me countless beautiful memories.

“Even though the kids make a mess at times, it has worked out well for everyone in my family.” Meeks says. She views “whatever makes-you-happy hour” as a daily period to make new memories and build a good family relationship.

On Oct. 2nd, 2023, Katalin Karikó and her workmate, Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in Physiology (生理学) or Medicine. But while both scientists worked hard on the way to the huge success, Karikó had to get over greater difficulties.
Born in 1955 in Szolnok, Hungary, the researcher began her work on biological (生物学的) research in 1978. In 1985, she decided to travel abroad with her husband and daughter, and work in the US. In 1995, she had to accept low pay to keep on with her study on mRNA vaccine (疫苗). In 2013, Karikó “was laid off from Penn (宾夕法尼亚大学)”, because the university told her that her study of mRNA vaccine was not hopeful. Yet the scientist’s love for her work did not change. “When I was asked to leave, I didn’t feel sorry for myself,” she said. “You have to keep your mind on finding out what’s next.”

But books are for use, not for show. You should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, to find them quickly, and then in later years.
Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth. This habit can be developed with every advantage (优势). The best wallpaper is books.
