Walking into Dryden Theater, I felt as if I had stepped into a time machine—the traditional, old-timey box office, tons of old-style movie posters on the walls. As everyone took their seats, an older gentleman who looked like he walked straight out of the 1920s spoke to all of the attendees.
Normally, Philip Carli is the pianist playing the live accompaniment for the films. However, The Barker has music synchronized (同步) with the film, so he was tasked with giving the audience a historical background of the film. Carli’s wide breadth of knowledge about the background of the film made it feel as if I was transported to the time and place of The Barker before the start of the film.
Earlier, films were played with live accompaniment, contained intertitles to add context, and some added sound bites. With the invention of synchronized sound, films slowly added talking dialogue in scenes occasionally. The Barker, released in 1928, is considered a “part-talkie”.
The film, which explores the lives of workers, is the first appearance of all of the main cast in a talking role. It was revolutionary for the technology but also for the actors. My film experience consists of mostly talkies (有声电影), so watching The Barker, I felt like I witnessed something brand new.
The experience was unlike any movie-going experience I have ever had. Since viewing films has gradually been reduced to streaming services, especially since the pandemic, this has increased the accessibility of film but we are stripped of a social experience to watch a movie — one that attending The Barker reminded me of. This allowed us to return to the movie-going adventure. Finally, everyone wanted big screens and surround sound rather than the tiny screens in bedrooms. More importantly, we were all able to interact with a piece of content alongside other people.
The experience brought back the pastime of going to the cinema — one that I think we should continue to enjoy. I say we take a page out of the 1920s playbook and return back to the cinema.
24. Who is Philip Carli?
A. A famous pianist in the film. B. A person introducing the music.
C. A staff member in a box office. D. A musician playing music live.
25. What can we know about The Barker?
A. Its main cast had dialogues.
B. It had an old-style movie poster.
C. It was a talkie about workers.
D. It attracted quantities of audience.
26. What does the underlined word “stripped” probably mean in paragraph 5?
A. Disapproved. B. Dispossessed.
C. Transferred. D. Transformed.
27. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce a brand new film.
B. To compare silent films and sound films.
C. To appeal for seeing films in the cinema.
D. To show the author’s preference for films.

Facing intense competition for foods, sea otters (海獭) survive with the help of tools — like rocks and even glass bottles — that let them break open tougher prey (猎物) that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to eat.
That’s according to a new study of sea otters in Monterey Bay, California, which took a look at the tool use of individual otters. The findings reveal how this may increase their chances of survival in an uncertain world. Sea otters spend their days looking around for food in kelp (海草) forests. They dive to the bottom to grab tasty food, plus sometimes rocks that they plan to use as tools. They bring these to the surface and float on their backs as they get to work on opening and eating their snacks. “Their preferred food is urchins (海胆),” says biologist Chris Law, who notes that urchins are relatively easy for otters to break apart. But there are areas over-abundance of urchins, where urchins have eaten all the kelp. Since the kelp is gone, however, these urchins no longer have a good food supply and provide little nutritional value for otters. That’s a matter of life-and-death to otters, so they aren’t interested in consuming them.
“So that means otters have to eat alternative foods,” says Law. “Many of them are those super hard prey items that really require some kind of external force to break into.” Law and some co-workers analyzed data on 196 otters in California. It turns out that frequent tool users were able to eat harder and larger prey. This was particularly important for female otters, since they’re smaller than males and aren’t able to bite down with as much force.
“They typically wouldn’t be able to break into harder prey,” says Law. “But they use tools more than males, so they’re able to gain access to these novel sources of food items.” Besides, using tools protected the otters’ teeth. The researchers found that tool users had less dental damage from biting hard food items.
28. What can we infer about kelp and urchins?
A. Urchins survive kelp. B. Urchins destroy kelp forests.
C. Kelp and urchins coexist. D. Kelp restricts urchins’ growth.
29. Why are urchins abandoned by sea otters?
A. Urchins offer little nutrition. B. Otters find novel food items.
C. Urchins are hard to break apart. D. Otters are tired of eating urchins.
30. What can we know about male otters?
A. They prefer to consume soft food. B. They make less use of tools for food.
C. Their food chain has been broken. D. Their teeth are easier to get damaged.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Sea Otters’ Favorite Food: Urchins in Kelp Forests.
B. The Relationship Between Sea Otters’ Diet and Kelp Forests.
C. Differences in Tool Use Between Male and Female Sea Otters.
D Tool Use: A Key to Sea Otters’ Survival in Competition for Food.

To determine the type and severity of a cancer, scientists usually analyze thin slices of a tumor(肿瘤) under a microscope. But to tell how the tumor is treated, scientists must perform genetic sequencing(排序) of the RNA isolated from the tumor, a process that can take weeks and costs thousands of dollars.
But now, Stanford Medicine researchers have developed an artificial intelligence-powered computational program that can predict the activity of thousands of genes within tumor cells. The tool was created using data from more than 7,000 diverse tumor samples. The team showed that it could be used routinely to predict genetic variations in breast cancers and to predict patient outcomes.
“This kind of software could be used to quickly identify gene signatures in patients’ tumors, speeding up clinical (临床的) decision-making and saving the health care system thousands of dollars,” said Olivier Gevaert, PhD.
The researchers began with 7,584 cancer biopsies (活检) from 16 different cancer types. Each biopsy had been sliced into thin sections and prepared. After the researchers integrated their new cancer biopsies as well as other datasets, including images from thousands of healthy cells, the AI program-which they named SEQUOIA-was able to predict the expression patterns of more than 15,000 different genes from the stained images.
To test the effect of SEQUOIA for clinical decision-making, Gevaert and his colleagues identified breast cancer genes that the model could accurately predict the expression of and that are already used in commercial breast cancer genomic tests.
The AI model can’t yet be used in a clinical setting, but Gevaert said his team is studying its potential applications. In the future, he said, SEQUOIA could reduce the need for expensive gene expression tests. “We’ve shown how useful this could be for breast cancer, and we can now use it for all cancers,” he said. “It’s a whole new source of data that we didn’t have before.”
32. How do scientists usually find out the treatment of a tumor?
A. By analyzing its thin slices.
B. By using a computational program.
C. By performing genetic sequencing.
D. By referring to routinely collected data.
33. What can we know about SEQUOIA from the passage?
A. It has been widely used.
B. It can predict all genes’ activity.
C. It has reduced the cost of gene tests.
D. It’s likely to lessen the requirement for costly genetic tests.
34. What did Gevaert think of the future of the AI model?
A. Potential. B. Useless. C. Changeable. D. Ambiguous.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A new tool for analyzing tumor slices.
B. An AI tool to predict tumor gene activity.
C. An attempt to perform original genetic sequencing.
D. AI technology to revolutionize the treatment of cancer.

Bossy, dominant, controlling — have these labels ever come to mind when you think of others or yourself? Or have others used these terms to describe you? However, control isn’t purely negative.____36____ Its role in our lives is far more complicated. Let’s unpack it.
____37____ Air traffic controllers ensure planes’ safe navigation. Teachers who manage classes effectively create a thriving environment. Self-control, too, is a cornerstone (基石) of personal growth, helping us pursue long term goals. These all show how control can be a force for order and progress.
But when control changes into a strong desire to be in charge all the time and make others do exactly what you want, many problems will start to appear. Some individuals use threats, or even force to impose (强制实行) their will. ____38____ If you recognize such behavior in others or experience it yourself, seeking support from trusted adults is crucial-they can help address the harm.
Psychologists link the desire for control to underlying anxiety. When we feel uncertain or that we don’t know what to do in life, the need to manage every little thing becomes a way to deal with our feelings. And gradually, it becomes a negative cycle which gains strength.____39____
Life’s changes often spark control urges. Physical or emotional changes, family conflicts, or the loss of a loved one trigger (引发) feelings of powerlessness. Transitions like starting a new school or moving to a different city can also disrupt (扰乱) our sense of stability. ____40____ It’s a natural response to life’s unpredictability.
A. This can be a form of abuse.
B. Control has clear positive applications.
C. Uncertainty weakens our self-confidence.
D. The sense of loss can also explain the reason.
E. In such moments, the need to regain control becomes intense.
F. Actually, control doesn’t fit neatly into “good” or “bad” boxes.
G. If left unchecked, it can damage relationships and generate stress.

On a sweltering (闷热的) August day in Savannah, Georgia, I was completely unaware that a life-changing moment was about to occur. After I loaded fresh peaches into my car and was about to leave the lively farmers’ market, my car decided to play a cruel joke on me-it refused to start.
I had no choice but to have my car towed (拖) to a garage nearby. Standing there, the intense heat beating down on me, I felt a lump forming in my throat. Just then, an elderly woman with a warm smile approached me. “Car trouble, too?” she asked, her voice filled with concern. I nodded, frustration evident in my expression. “I have no idea what’s wrong. It was working fine earlier.”
What began as a simple exchange soon turned into a sincere conversation. She listened attentively as I complained about my car, and then we found ourselves chatting comfortably. We shared stories about my travels, her cozy hometown, her husband’s recent fishing hobby, and my parents’ plans for a beach vacation.
“Your car is all set, ma’am,” the mechanic called out to the woman. She thanked him with a gracious smile and turned to me. As she was about to walk away, she paused, as if in deep thought. “I need to tell you something,” she said, her tone serious. “My daughter passed away a couple of years ago. Even now, small things can set me off. But every so often, I meet someone who reminds me of her, and today, you did. I believe that maybe it’s a sign, that she’s still with me in some way. Talking to you has been a real pleasure.” She smiled, her eyes glistening. “When you get home, give your parents a big hug. They’re lucky to have you.”

第二节(满分25 分)
【67题答案】
【答案】
I felt tears of my own welling up in my eyes. I was deeply touched by her words. It was such a powerful and unexpected moment. I reached out and gave her a gentle hug, saying, “Thank you for sharing that with me. It means a lot.” She smiled back, and we said our goodbyes. As I watched her drive away, I knew that this encounter had changed me. It made me realize how precious life is and how important it is to cherish every moment with our loved ones.
A few hours later, I pulled into the driveway at my parents’ house. I got out of the car and ran towards the front door. When I saw my parents, I gave them the biggest hug I could. They were a bit surprised at first, but then they just laughed and hugged me back. I told them about my day, about the woman at the garage and what she had said. They listened intently, and I could see the love in their eyes. That night, as I lay in bed, I thought about the woman and her daughter. I knew that from that day on, I would never take my family for granted again.
