Passage 1
(24-25九上·上海杨浦区·期中)
The moon was low in the sky as Mia finished loading her pickup truck. She led her two-year-old dog, Buddy, to his cage in the back of the truck. It was two in the morning.
Three days earlier, 12-year-old Jake had gone missing from his Boy Scout camp in the Blue Mountains. Many people searched for him, but they found very few clues. So, they phoned the Search and Rescue Dog Association. Mia and Buddy were part of it. They had trained for a year to help find lost people. Mia remembered what her husband, Dave, had said before she left that morning. “Don’t get your hopes up,” he had warned. But Mia was determined. “Jake has been out there for three days. Buddy can help!” she replied.
When Mia arrived at the meeting point, the rescuers explained that the ground was very rough. They had to move on their hands and knees at times, and none of their dogs had found a smell. Mia let out a breath; it would be a tough job.
At 6 a.m, Mia and the other searchers learned more about Jake. She studied his photo, wanting to remember his face. “Jake is alive,” she told Buddy. “We’re going to find him.”
Mia took out a piece of Jake’s clothing for Buddy to smell. With his nose up, Buddy started down the path. Suddenly, Mia saw Buddy’s head lift. He ran ahead, and Mia quickly followed.
Then she saw Jake in a red jacket, looking weak. “Jake, is that you?” Mia yelled. He nodded slowly. Mia climbed up to him and sat him next to Buddy. “Do you like dogs?” she asked. He nodded again.
While Mia called the base camp, Jake ate some peanut butter crackers. Buddy eagerly ate the leftovers.
Back at the base camp, Mia called Dave. “You won’t believe what Buddy did! He found Jake!”
“Really?” Dave said, surprised. Mia smiled, happy that Buddy had proven him wrong.

Passage 2
(24-25九上·上海浦东新区·期中)
For skydivers, the sky isn’t the limit. It’s just the beginning. Thousands of people try skydiving each year. Some only jump once, while others go on to experience lifelong adventures, flying and turning over through the air.
Skydiving is a method of leaving an airplane and returning to the earth with the help of gravity (重力), then slowing down by using a parachute (降落伞). It may include more or less free-fall, a time during which the parachute has not been used and the body gradually accelerates (加速) to the highest speed.
There are three choices for the beginners. However, before you try skydiving, a ground course on safety is required. The first method is accelerated free-fall. You jump out of the plane while being held by two coaches, one on either side. They hold onto you until you open your parachute. The second method is called static line. After jumping out, you will experience free-fall for a second or two. Then the weight of your body will pull the line tight, opening the parachute. Tandem (串联) is the most popular because it is the easiest. You and the coach are tied together, the coach behind, with you in front. You jump out of the plane together, and the coach takes care of opening the parachute.
For each of these three methods, the coaches give instructions in the air with hand signals or a radio. If you want to try something challenging and would love to feel the freedom of flying, skydiving might be an adventure for you. Who knows? With risk and excitement mixed together, skydiving might just change your life.

A live-streaming app (直播应用) that monitors (监控) students in classrooms in some middle schools has raised a lot of online discussion. It was reported that any user of the app Shuidi could see inside classrooms. Some parents have praised the app for giving them the chance to monitor their children, while others worry about privacy (隐私) problems. Do you think the app is a good idea?
I strongly support this app. Nowadays, children play an important role in the whole family, and parents always want to care for their children, wherever they are. This new platform (平台) helps parents see what their children are doing in classes. It’s also a good way to make students behave themselves in school.

I’m in favor of this app if parents get their children’s permission (准许) first. The app could help parents focus on children’s bad habits. It could also be used as a tool to prevent bullying (霸凌). However, parents should get their permission first to protect their privacy.

I think this app is a bad idea. Schools should be a pleasant and relaxing place for students to study and play. But we will feel uncomfortable if cameras are watching us all the time. We should pay attention to our privacy. Our lives shouldn’t be watched by the public.

When my parents, three sisters and I arrived at her house, we found she had waited up all night for our arrival. Once arriving, we immediately set to prepare for the birthday celebration. We ordered a large birthday cake and decorated the house with colorful belts and balloons. When everything was ready, I noticed something was missing.
“Where is your scarf? ” I asked.
That scarf, faded (褪色的) and even older than my mother, meant a lot to my grandmother. Grandfather gave it to grandmother forty years ago on their first date. But now, on her first birthday without him, the scarf was gone, too.
“It must be somewhere,” she said, “Your grandfather always packed everything so carefully.”
Then we began to search every corner for the missing scarf. As we emptied box after box and found no scarf, my grandmother’s eyes were filled with tears. However, seeing our worried look, she soon hid her disappointment.
“Check it out! This may be a gift from grandfather!” My sister shouted as the found a well-wrapped (精美包装的) box.
Grandmother shakily opened the box. With great joy, she pulled out a brand-new red scarf with a note. Her voice trembled as she read it aloud:
“Dear, I noticed some tiny holes in your scarf when I washed it. So I thought it was time for a new one. I hope it can bring you as much joy as the first one did. Happy birthday! Love, Bryant.”

Passage 2
(24-25九上·上海黄浦区·期中)
Doctors say anger can be very dangerous. We have to learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and even cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a peaceful and reasonable way. Some people are so angry that they shout or cry to show their anger. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing (压抑性的) anger.
In the past many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it.
They said that when a person is angry, the brain produces the same hormones (荷尔蒙). Their hearts beat faster and blood pressure goes up. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe if you express anger with strong emotion, you may develop heart disease, and they believe if you keep the anger inside, you may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say we have to learn how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to agree that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself peacefully and reasonably.”
Doctors say that the best way to deal with anger is to find humour in the situation that has made you angry. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

Karlsson, a Swedish teacher at Beijing Union University (BUU), has lived in China for over 15 years. The seeds (种子) of his China journey were sown when he joined in a program for East Asian studies at Lund University in Sweden in 1997. Back then, cellphones and the Internet hadn’t yet come into wide use. Learning Chinese meant using textbooks, heavy dictionaries and audio tapes. He would read the dictionary carefully for hours to understand a one-page Chinese article.
“In those days, it was a real challenge,” he said.
In 2006, with a high score in the official Chinese language test, he won a scholarship for a five-week summer program at Beijing Language and Culture University.
After finishing the study program, Karlsson was offered a Beijing-based job as a market researcher. In 2008, the year Beijing succeeded in hosting the Summer Olympic Games, he got married. In the next year, he started to teach business at BUU.
Life in Beijing has been a wonderful adventure (异乎寻常的经历), especially as a witness to the great achievements China has made. It has offered him many chances for personal growth. Today, thanks to high-speed broadband and 5G, he can connect with students at BUU’s partner universities in Russia, Montenegro or Mexico while riding on the Beijing subway.
“When you open your eyes to these great projects, it is impossible not to want to be part of them or at least support them somehow,” he said.
Although he was busy on teaching days, Karlsson applied for a full-time scholarship at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. In 2022, at 44 years old, he got his Ph.D.in economics. “I am quite interested in blockchain technology, and I know that China is quickly becoming the leader in blockchain applications outside the cryptocurrency space. Reporter: What is the most unforgettable experience you have met while working for the SPCA?
Ms Ann Lek: Looking after pets and being able to bring them to work! I really appreciate (感激) the fact that I can bring my pets with me into the office when I want to. They’re my joy and give me the energy at work. Being able to bring my dogs or cats to work and having my workmates worry about them and shower them totally makes my day.
Reporter: Which misunderstanding of pets would you like to change most?
Ms Ann Lek: I really hate it when people are unhappy when I talk about pets, or when taxi drivers refuse to take me because I’m travelling with my dog. Whenever I speak to them and ask why, they always give the same terrible reason: “They’re dirty.” They work and travel closely with human beings every day and share all kinds of public things, but why should we get worried about contracting (感染) a kind of illness from the friendly neighbourhood pets? So I think education is the key!

44.How does Ann help people learn more about animals?

Passage 1
(24-25九上·上海建平实验中学·期中)
Dreams, Cheers and Tears
JUST think about it: How long is 46 seconds? A computer might take 46 seconds to start up. And it might take you that long to lace up your sneakers. But on August 4, swimmer Pan Zhanle swam 100 meters in 45.92 seconds. With their amazing speed, he and his teammates redefined (重新定义) the game. They became the first non-American team to win the Olympic men’s 4×100m medley relay in more than 40 years.
That was just one of China’s many breakthrough moments from this summer’s Olympics. Three days earlier, Pan had shocked the world in the men’s 100m freestyle. Like a flying fish, he touched the wall in 46.40 seconds. It was a new world record. Outside the pool, “Queen Wen,” or Zheng Qinwen, won China’s first Olympic tennis gold. Deng Yawen bagged China’s first gold medal in BMX freestyle.
One thing that struck me was how young these champions are. Most of them were born this century. Diver Quan Hongchan already has three Olympic gold medals, yet she is only 17 years old. I spend my days writing for kids, but now, I’m finding myself writing about many of them because, even at their young age, they’re already making waves on the world stage.
The gold medalists certainly got the most attention. Some athletes, however, made history even without winning medals. One of them is skater Cui Chenxi. In the women’s skateboarding street final, the 13-year-old finished fourth. It was China’s best result so far in this Olympic event.
Naturally, while some cried tears of joy, others shed tears of regret. Swimmer Zhang Yufei returned home with one silver and five bronze medals but no gold. The 26-year-old isn’t sure about her chances for the 2028 Games. All athletes want gold medals, but “it’s a competitive world.” Zhang said in an interview. “You can’t always get what you want even if you’ve done your best.”
It will be another four years until the next Olympics, but our athletes are already dreaming big. Do you also have a dream? How about chasing it alongside your favorite sports heroes?
49.Which country’s team did Pan Zhanle and his teammates defeat in the Olympic men’s 4×100m medley relay after more than 40 years?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
50.Pan Zhanle set a new world record with a time of 46.40 seconds, didn’t he?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
51.What Olympic achievement did Zheng Oinwen make?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
52.How did 13-year-old skater Cui Chenxi perform in the women’s skateboarding street final?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
53.Why did Swimmer Zhang Yufei return home in tears of regret?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
54.Do you think winning gold medals is a good way to measure an athlete’s success? Why or why not?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
49.The American team.
50.Yes, he did.
51.Zheng Qinwen won China’s first Olympic tennis gold.
52.Cui Chenxi finished fourth in the women’s skateboarding street final.
53.Because she won one silver and five bronze medals but no gold.

Allen's First Marathon (马拉松)
One of Allen's ankles was injured one month before his first time to compete in a marathon. This meant he could not run or train for two weeks. Yet, Allen made up his mind to go ahead.
Allen remembers back to his first year in the school. He was only seven at that time. In his first P. E. class, his teacher required them to run laps and then hit a ball. He didn't do either well. He was later told that he was "not athletic"—he had no talent in sports.
The idea that he was not athletic went with him for years. When he started running in his thirties, he realized running marathon was not about competition or whether he was physically strong and active. He thought that .
The night before his first marathon, he dreamed that he couldn't even find the finish line. He woke up sweating (冒汗) and nervous, but ready to prove something to himself.
Shortly after crossing the star line, his shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So Allen stopped to tie them. Not the start he wanted!
At mile 3, Allen passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, he became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. When he felt the pain, he tried to slow down and walked a bit and then ran again.
As Allen approached mile 25—near the finish line, he saw his wife waving a sign to encourage him. She is Allen's biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 5 a.m. or questioned his money on running.
Allen was one of the final runners to finish. But he finished! And he also got a medal. In fact, he got the same medal as the one that the man who got in first place.
Allen made up his mind to be himself and moved forward. He can now call himself a real winner.

Half a year before graduating from college, my son Kevin began to seek a job and soon got an interview. There were only three people for the final interview including him. The interview was very simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. The interviewer said to them, “All of you are very good. Please go home and wait for our response.”
Three days later, Kevin received a message from the company saying that he had not been offered a job. He felt deeply disappointed. But later in the evening he told me that he had received another message saying that he had been employed by the company.
Actually the first message sent to Kevin was also part of the test in the interview. The three men received the same message, but only my son’s reply satisfied the company, so he was given the job. I asked Kevin, “How did all of you reply?” He said, “One did not reply; the other said ‘goodbye’, and I said ‘thank you’.”
Only then did I know that my son’s job came in that way. It also makes me know when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say “thank you” to the one who disappoints you. Passage 4
(24-25九上·上海崇明区·期中)
Frida Kahlo (弗里达·卡罗) was a Mexican artist. She was born in Coyoacán, near Mexico City, in 1907. Frida grew up in a bright blue house called La Casa Azul with her parents and sisters. When she was six years old, she became ill with polio (小儿麻痹症). The illness left her right leg shorter than her left.
Frida spent a lot of her life in and out of hospitals. She had many health problems, and she suffered a lot of pain. When she was eighteen, she was in a bus accident. She broke a lot of bones and spent many months recovering (康复). It was at this time that Erida started to paint. Many of her paintings from this time are self-portrairs (自画像) that show her pain and suffering.
In 1929, Frida married Diego Rivera, a Mexican artist who was famous for huge paintings on walls. Both artists continued their work and became successful at home and abroad. After they got married, Frida started to wear traditional Mexican clothes and became interested in Mexican folk art. This influenced her paintings, which are very bright and colorful, with a style that was very personal to Frida. However, they continued to show the pain and sadness which she experienced during her life.
Frida’s health condition became worse in 1950. That year she was diagnosed with gangrene (坏疽) in her right foot. She had to lie in bed for the next nine months and had several operations. But with great persistence (毅力), Frida continued to work and paint.

Sally woke with a sudden movement. She heard strange sounds; she could smell smoke. The room was full of smoke. She coughed. What was happening? Her bedroom door opened with a bang and her mother ran in, her face white.
“Get up Sally, we have to go! Get dressed now!” Her mother disappeared back into the house.
Sally jumped from her bed and opened the window. Screams and cries came from the streets below. Sally watched people throw their things into carts, horses threading the ground, keen to leave.
“Hey, what’s happening?” Sally yelled.
“Fire!” her neighbour shouted back.
“Coming from Pudding Lane! Get out now Sally! No one is safe!”
Sally pulled her window shut and got changed as quickly as she could. Downstairs, she found her father, mother and sister jamming their things into a handcart. They watched people trying to put out the big fire with leather buckets full of water. It didn’t seem to make any difference, as the fire jumped from one building to the next.
“The houses are so close tighter and made of wood!” Sally noticed, as she tripped over candlesticks, burnt pans and odd bits of furniture that people had dropped in the streets.
The grocer’s boy, Tom Winter, saw Sally and said, “Some people are going to St. Paul’s Cathedral to stay safe. Made of stone. Won’t burn like wood.” Sally nodded, but followed her parents down the dark street.

Passage 3
(24-25九上·上海建平实验中学·期中)
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days. I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone. I started noticing changes— changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused. Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the desire was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, and get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

Passage 4
(23-24九上·上海杨浦区·期中)
OBSOLETE JOBS
In the past, there were lots of jobs that we don’t have anymore. Many of these jobs have been taken over by machines, but some have just disappeared altogether. Let me tell you about some of them.
1. Telegraph Operators
Long ago, people used telegraphs to send messages over long distances. It was like sending an old-fashioned text message, but you needed a telegraph operator to send it using a special machine. But now, we don’t have telegraph operators anymore!
2. Lift Operators
These days, when we want to go up or down in an elevator, we just press a button. But a long time ago, before 1950, there were people called lift operators. They would ride in the elevator with you and operate it. Nowadays, we don’t see lift operators very often, but some still work in special places like the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
3. Lamplighters
Back at the start of the 20th century, many cities used gas street lamps, not electric ones. Lamplighters had the job of going around in the evening and lighting these lamps with a big candle on a long stick. They would light about a hundred lamps in an hour. But today, we have electric streetlights, so lamplighters are gone.
4. Typesetters
Before we had computers, people used to make books and newspapers by hand. They had to arrange metal letters in wooden frames to create the pages. It was a bit like a big puzzle! Nowadays, computers help us do this work efficiently, so typesetters are not needed anymore.
5. Switchboard Operators
Believe it or not, in the past, when you wanted to make a phone call, you had to talk to an operator. You had to tell them the number you wanted to call, and they would connect your call for you. This job was mostly done by women at the beginning of the 20th century. But now, we can make phone calls without operators.
Will more jobs disappear in the future? It’s very likely. The world is changing so quickly that ________. That’s just how the world works!

7.Do thousands of people try skydiving each year, don’t they?

Passage 2
(24-25九上·上海七宝实验中学·期中)
—— Linda
I’m in favor of this app if parents get their children’s permission (准许) first. The app could help parents focus on children’s bad habits. It could also be used as a tool to prevent bullying (霸凌). However, parents should get their permission first to protect their privacy.
—— Jeff
I think this app is a bad idea. Schools should be a pleasant and relaxing place for students to study and play. But we will feel uncomfortable if cameras are watching us all the time. We should pay attention to our privacy. Our lives shouldn’t be watched by the public.
—— Betty
Any form of privacy invasion (侵犯) shouldn’t be allowed. Although some parents want to know more about their children, they should do it in a better way. Being under the eye of strangers is too dangerous.
—— David
13.Does the living-streaming app monitor students in classrooms in some middle schools?

This was my grandmother’s first birthday without grandfather, and before he passed away, we had promised him that we would make it her best birthday ever. Grandfather had always said that grandmother expected her birthday party every day since it was also a time for family reunion (团聚).
Finally, grandmother blew out the candles in her new scarf, as if grandfather were still with her. It also brought my grandfather home in each of our hearts and made the party our best birthday celebration ever.

(24-25九上·上海奉贤区多校联考·期中)
Lost and found
A few years ago, after a long weekend in Inner Mongolia (内蒙古), my friend Andy and I returned to Beijing. After getting off the train, we packed ourselves into a crowded bus to go home.
After getting off, we decided to get some coffee. “I’ll get two lattes (拿铁咖啡). We need to wake up,” I said, reaching into my shirt for money.
Gone. No wallet. No passport. Everything was gone. Andy ran off to scan the street but came back shaking his head. “It’s no use,” I said, trying to stay calm. “I’m going to the office. I need to freeze my bank card and find a copy of my passport.”
I reported the theft to my boss, Mr. Chen. “It’ll be okay,” he said. “You had a good time other than this, I hope.” I nodded, though the fun of the weekend was already a distant memory.
I walked over to my desk, feeling sad. Suddenly, my phone rang. “Are you Michelle McGraw? Have you lost your wallet?” a male voice asked.
“Yes,” I answered.
“I’m Officer Gao. Come to our station. Mr. Liu Yumin has turned in a wallet. We think it’s yours.”
Shocked, I handed my phone to a Chinese colleague. After talking to the policeman, she smiled, “You must be the luckiest person in Beijing today.”
The next day, Mr. Chen took me to meet Mr. Liu at a seafood restaurant. “He doesn’t want a reward,” my boss told me. “I guess you can buy him a nice meal to show your gratitude (感激).”
The gentleman was a taxi driver. After finding my wallet that day, he immediately called 110. The police came and took it away.

Passage 1
(24-25九上·上海民办欣竹中学·期中)
Education Is the Key
Reporter: Hello, everyone. Besides helping animals in pain, the SPCA also runs a very active education program in schools. Meet Ms Ann Lek, our Education Officer. Her job is to help more people understand animals so that they will be treated (对待) better.
Reporter: What is your job duty in the SPCA, Ann?
Ms Ann Lek: I give talks at schools and in many other places to help people learn more about animals. I pay visits at our shelter once a week to teach people what they should consider before getting a pet. Besides weekly talks and visits, I also help educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
Reporter: When did you decide to become an Education Officer?
Ms Ann Lek: I always love animals and want to make this world a better place for them. I started as a volunteer with the organization, when I was still attending university. It is so enjoyable to work with those who feel the same as I do. After volunteering for four years, I wanted to do more. I decided to join them full-time when they needed an Education Officer.
43.Is Ms Ann Lek an Education Officer in the SPCA?

Sadly, Frida died on July 13, 1954, after suffering more and more health problems. Her husband died three years later. Today, Frida and Diego’s home, La Casa Azul, is a very popular museum.

The Winning Team
Peter kept his eyes on the ground and felt a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the worst day of his life. His mind would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down. His stupid mistake made him angry. His team lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach may kick him off the team.
As soon as he walked through the door, his father asked, “What’s wrong, son?” Peter’s feelings were written all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room without another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too hard on yourself.”
“I lost the game, Dad. I failed my team. Perhaps they’ll never let me play again.”
“Soccer is about team effort. You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game. The other half is learning to talk to your teammates and learning from your mistakes.”
Peter didn’t say anything but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with courage rather than fear in his heart.
“Hey, guys,” he said to his teammates. “I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so close to winning that game. But I think if we continue to pull together, we’re going to win the next one.”

Passage 4
