Passage 1
(24-25八上·上海建平南汇实验学校·期中)
What are teenagers nowadays crazy about? Popular songs? Harry Porter books? Sports or online games? For me, the 26 is history.
History is a part of my leisure time. Since I was 10, I’ve been reading history books, 27 old maps and visiting museums. I always get excited when people around me talk about history.
I have learnt a lot from history. It has helped me deal with the problem of growing up. History is precious wealth.
History helps me become more mature (成熟). I used to 28 that life is simple to understand. Now I know that we 29 make simple judgments. People aren’t “good” or “bad”; things aren’t “true” or “false”.
History has also made me mentally (精神上) stronger. I’m more responsible now. I have learned useful things about myself from studying the rise and fall of kings and queens.
When I studied Chinese history between 1840 and 1949, I knew I must be a strong person and 30 for China.
Francis Bacon wrote, “Histories make men 31 ”. I agree with that. If you know history, you respect the past and you are confident about the future. History tells you where you come from, where you are and where you are going. That is the attraction of history. Don’t you think so?

(24-25八上·上海奉贤区·期中)
Have you ever had a day when everything seemed to be wrong, and nothing seemed to be right? Not too long ago I was having one of those days. I was sad and 32 . My focus was on me. After all, no one else was experiencing the same problems as I was.
I expressed my sad state to my mother, hoping for some pity. 33 , she said, “I heard Jamie was having a difficult day too. Why don’t you make her some cookies and take them to her this afternoon?”
I didn’t really want to, but decided that I didn’t want to go back to my other problems just yet. I made the cookies and put them in a lovely box. Then I 34 a card with a small and sweet note.
That afternoon I visited my friend’s house. I went to the door and rang the bell. Soon, Jamie came to the door and looked at me 35 because she didn’t expect my visit. Before she could say anything, I rushed, “I heard you were having a hard day and I made a decision to bring you something. I hope your day goes better.” I couldn’t describe the look that came over Jamie’s 36 properly. It was as if (好像) a dark sky suddenly shone with the golden rays (光线) of the sun; it was as if in that small act, her day became 37 .
I got back into the car and for some amazing reason, I felt a lot better myself. That day I experienced the truth that “those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.”

Passage 3
(24-25八上·上海闵行区·期中)
Lucy just had a good time at Disneyland. Andy did well on last month’s math test and his dad bought him a new smartwatch. And now, Cyndy is playing with her cute kitten. On social media, everyone seems to be happy all the time.
But can that be true in real life? The answer to this question is no. As a teenager, you haven’t had much life experience. Sometimes, you might have very 38 hopes. For example, you wanted to get an A+ on an exam. It didn’t happen, and you felt sad. Sadness is not always bad. It can push you to do better next time.
But it’s a different story if your sadness is starting to 39 your daily life. Maybe you don’t want to go to school in the morning. Or you don’t feel like going out with your friends. If you feel like that, you may be falling into depression.
I felt this way when my dog, Rebel, died. He was always by my side. Every morning, he followed me to school. Now, he was 40 and I didn’t want to do anything.
My parents said I was having unrealistic hopes. Dogs don’t live forever. Rebel had a good life. He probably wanted me to have a good life, too.
Depression is not a sign of being weak. 41 , it’s a part of who we are. Many famous people, like comedian Jim Carrey, have also experienced depression. When you feel depressed, you must not shut yourself away from the world. Share your feelings with a good friend. Eat something delicious and take a walk in the park. Ask for any help you need. You’re not 42 in the battle against this terrible feeling!

Growing up in Australia, I wanted a penfriend. I was 13, had just started middle school and needed someone to talk to. So I went through all of the penfriend sites I could find on the Internet, 43 for any girl of my age from different countries. I wrote to a Swede, an Italian, an American, a Finn, an Arab and an Egyptian, telling them about my family, my school and my country. 44 one girl replied—the Egyptian. Her name was Noran Hussein. When I opened my e-mail box and saw the reply, I was 45 .
We started off by telling each other about our lives. Right from the start I could tell that we 46 the same interests. Step by step we discussed problems all over the world.
People often ask if I’m afraid to ask Noran about certain things, like wearing the veil (面纱). I’m not. To me, asking questions is the first step towards understanding. 47 we stand back and only wonder, we’ll start to run into problems.
Noran and I are different, but we never say that 48 is wrong. I have learned more than I could ever hope to learn from a textbook. I wish people to experience what I have experienced—to learn that it is OK to be different, not to be afraid of one another.

How can she do that? Here is some of her advice. Hard work is not the whole story. It’s not how long you sit at the desk. It’s 50 you do while you are sitting.”

Passage 1
(23-24八上·上海杨浦区·期中)

Another problem is the 57 of the information online. How do we know if it is accurate or reliable? Knowing (and remembering) how to find certain information will be more important than knowing the information itself.
Finally, the internet is a good tool but it cannot take the place of our 59 . If we did not remember anything, we would all spend even more time on our phones and computers than we already do, which is not good for society.

“Your Majesty,” said the neighbour, “I sold him the well, but not the water in it. I just want to get the money that I deserve (应得的).”
The king asked Birbal to 64 the argument between these two men. So the minister asked them more questions. He found out that the old man was a poor but honest man. The neighbour, 65 , was a cunning man who was trying to cheat (欺骗) the old man.
At last, Birbal said to the neighbour, “This well belongs to the old man now, right?” “Yes, sir!” the neighbour replied. Birbal continued, “But you have put your water into his well. Either you should pay him the rent (租金) for it, or you should take all the water 66 it right now!”

Harbin, in northeastern China, is the site of the Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival, the biggest winter festival in the world. Some of the biggest and most beautiful ice sculptures (雕塑) can be seen in the festival.
Harbin’s location and freezing temperatures make it a 67 place to host a winter festival. The city centre sits on the banks of the Songhua River. The river freezes over in the winter and provides hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of ice. Ice artists from around the world turn the blocks of ice into buildings, animals, and other 68 .
The world’s largest winter festival grew out of a traditional ice lantern display and garden party that was 69 held in 1963. The snow and ice sculptures became part of the ice lantern festivities in 1985. In 2001, the celebration and Heilongjiang’s International Ski Festival joined together and started to use its current (现行的) name.
It’s hard to imagine that this grand display of ice and snow sculptures started as ice in a bucket. Traditional ice lanterns were created by freezing water in a bucket, 70 the ice, and making a hole into the block of ice. A candle was then placed inside the block to create a lantern.
Today’s creations are much more carefully 71 and take much more time to form. Although the basic materials are the same-water, light, and ice-the displays now include LED lights and a lot of details. From a 72 block of ice to the world’s largest ice and snow amusement park, the festival has made a dramatic change. No wonder it attracts millions of people each year.

Passage 1
(23-24八上·上海闵行区·期中)
My six-year-old granddaughter, Caitlynd, and I stopped at a bakery for some bread. As we were going out the door, a young teenage boy was coming in.
This young man had no hair on the sides of his head and some blue hair on top of it. One of his nostrils was pierced (穿孔), and his ears were full of rings. He held a skateboard under one arm and a basketball under 78 . Caitlynd, who was walking ahead of me, stopped when she saw the teen.
I thought he’d scared her and she’d frozen on the spot. I was wrong. My Grand Angel backed up against the door and opened it as 79 as it would go. Now I was face to face with the young man. I stepped aside and let him pass. His response was a kind “Thank you very much”.
On our way to the car, I praised Caitlynd for her 80 in holding open the door for the young man. She didn’t seem to be 81 by his appearance but I wanted to make sure. If a grandmotherly talk about freedom of self-expression and allowing people their differences was in order, I wanted to be ready.
It 82 that the person who needed the talk was me. The only thing Caitlynd noticed about the teen, was the fact that his arms were full. “He would’ve had a hard time to open the door.” I saw the partially shaved head, the blue hair, the piercings and the earrings. She saw a person carrying something under each arm and heading toward a door. I’m always the one who is so quick to judge. In the future, I hope to get down on her 83 and raise my sights.

Skimming and scanning is a good method when you don’t have enough time, such as when you are taking an exam, but, today, many people skim and scan everything and they have lost the ability to enjoy reading.
In response to this, something called the “slow reading movement” has become popular. The idea is that people should 84 their computers and mobile phones for half an hour or forty-five minutes each day and enjoy the pleasure of reading a good book—slowly and quietly!
Researchers have found that reading slowly, especially books of fiction, helps people relax and think about what they are reading. It also helps people get to understand the characters’ emotions and to see the world 85 the characters’ eyes.
Reading, of course, isn’t easy. You have to sit still for one thing. And it can seem 86 when compared to the excitement of playing video games. But, for me, reading has always been a pleasure in my life. From the age of ten, when I got my first library card, I’ve enjoyed the company (陪伴) of heroes, of evil criminal and clever detectives, of thousands of interesting people I would have never met 87 . Reading provided me with escape, but it also enabled me to understand the world around me. It was an education in a classroom that had no walls.
