Half a life half way around the world
I lived the first two decades of my life in America and the next two in China. It is a strange feeling to know your own country only as a child and to become an adult on foreign 1
I experienced very little culture shock upon arriving in 1998 because I knew very little about China. I had no 2 . Just live and learn. I arrived in China as a college student at Nanjing University.
On my first day living at the student dormitory, I went downstairs to the convenience store to buy a(n) 3 of chips. I came back five minutes later to buy a Coke. As a joke I said to the cashier, “Long time no see!” She 4 corrected me and said,“ No,you were here five minutes ago.”That was lesson number one in China: Irony does not 5 .
Soon after, a local friend invited me to his house for my first ever lunch in a Chinese home. His father finished eating first, put down his bowl and chopsticks and said to me manman chi(“Eat slowly”). I was 6 . I didn’t realize this was part of Chinese etiquette. He wanted to express that just because he was done eating, I should not feel 7 to finish. I thought, “Am I eating too fast? Why does he care about the speed at which I eat?” After they explained it to me, I learned my second important lesson: To learn the language, one has to learn the culture.
I had already studied the language for three years before I came to China, but there was so much I didn’t understand.
Why were people putting food into my rice bowl? Why were people at the table telling me when I could and couldn’t drink my cup of beer? Why was it okay for everyone to spit things out 8 onto the table, but they covered up their mouths with their free hand when using a toothpick to be polite?
Living my adult life in a foreign country has become a life-long learning process.Chinese 9 have now become my own. They are so deeply 10 in my daily routine that I do not think about them. And it’s not just the little things. The way I see society, government, and personal relationships has all changed. The culture shock happens when I go back to America.

The historic city of Suzhou, about an hour’s drive from Shanghai, is crisscrossed with canals. Old whitewashed buildings line the banks. A century ago, some of these would have been chaguans, or traditional tea-houses, where locals 1 to discuss the news or conduct business. Today a visitor is more likely to find shops serving a different kind of beverage. There are dozens of Starbucks outlets in Suzhou, as well as other coffee sellers.
Between 2010 and 2023 coffee consumption per person in China 2 fourfold, according to the International Coffee Organization. The average Chinese person still drinks a fraction of the amount of coffee guzzled by the 3 American: 0.1kg per year compared with 4.7kg. But last year China 4 America, becoming the country with the most branded coffee shops (places like Starbucks) in the world, as the World Coffee Portal, a research firm, reported. China is home to nearly 50,000 such outlets.
The early history of coffee in China is fuzzy. By some 5 it was Danes who opened the first coffee shop in the country in the 1830s. A record from that period described coffee as a “black liquor, which the foreign devils drank after meals, saying it can help with 6 ”. A century later Lu Xun, a celebrated author, wrote that he didn’t drink the stuff: I always thought it was for the foreign excellencies.
But after China introduced market reforms and opened up to the world in the 1980s, foreign firms such as Maxwell House brought instant coffee to the country. They 7 to local tastes, making their mixes sweeter and less bitter than what they sold elsewhere. Western-style coffee shops arrive years later — chief among them Starbucks in 1999. The company’s freshly-brewed coffee was new to China. Having a laptop in one hand and a (relatively expensive) cup of Starbucks in the other became a way for young middle-class people to indicate their 8 .
The biggest coffee-drinking demographic is still “white-collar workers in first-tier cities aged between 20 and 40”, according to Deloitte, a consulting firm. China’s experience 9 that of Japan some 50 years ago, when rising incomes led to more coffee consumption.
Today, though, a wider range of the population is partaking thanks to the rise of 10 coffee chains selling affordable brews. The leader is Luckin Coffee, with over 20,000 outlets. Starbucks, by comparison, has 7,300 shops. A cup of basic Luckin coffee is about a third of the price of an equivalent Starbucks offering.

It aimed to create a global snapshot of humanity, 2 the diverse range of human experiences, cultures, and emotions that occur within a 24-hour period.

A recent article put a spotlight on how social media can fuel body dysmorphia (身体畸形恐惧症) in boys. As we regularly do when The Times writes about an issue that 1 on the lives of young people, we have asked teenagers to share their 2 - this time on the use of social media and the effects it may be having on body image issues.
Many of the teenagers agree that social media has been harmful to their body image and self-esteem (自尊).
Influencers share their “what I eat in a day” videos, and while their 3 may not be malicious (恶意的), comparison truly becomes the thief of joy. You start wondering how much you should be eating. While I admit that I have benefited from some 4 information that has been taught by professionals on social media, the popularity of unrealistic beauty 5 has been damaging to me?
— Ave, Los Angeles
Males face 6 pressures and hurdles to talking about their struggles
Not only on social media but also in the real world, males are taught differently than females about how to think about their struggles. People seem to notice the struggles females face when it comes to body image issues, but it is all too common for them to overlook the struggles that males face. As a result, males are often discouraged from sharing their struggles and are often ignored when they do make 7 such struggles.
— Devynne, Comets
Some said that following body-positive content can be encouraging.
I find that I encounter more body-positive content than that which is negative. The reason for this, though, 8 on who you follow. When I see body-positive content on social media, I find that it just makes me feel confident about the body I have. Positive content can show you that your body does not 9 you, and that you should not worry about having the smallest waist or biggest muscles. -Alexis, Hanover Horton High School
Teen warning - just remember, social media doesn’t show you the full picture of someone’s life.
In my case, social media has definitely affected the way I feel about myself and my body. Users on these platforms usually post things when they look their best, often neglecting to 10 to us their usual day-to-day appearance. Social media has caused me to feel as if I have to look a certain way at all times of the day, even if it is clear to me that 15-second TikTok clips of attractive users show just that: only 15 seconds of their day

The population of the world is increasing rapidly. By 2030, there could be 8.0 billion people on earth. Will there be 1 food for all these people, or will we have a food shortage? Some scientists think fish farming could 2 this problem. However, other scientists worry that fish farming could cause serious environmental problems.
Fish farming is not a 3 thing. There were fish farms in China 3, 000 years ago. Today, about one-third of the fish we eat comes from fish farms.
Most fish farms raise plant-eating fish. Popular kinds of plant-eating fish are carp, tilapia, and catfish. Unfortunately, many fish farms are starting to raise meat-eating fish. A popular type of meat-eating fish is salmon. These meat-eating fish live on 4 food made from wild fish. However, it takes up to 5 tons of wild fish to produce just 1 ton of farm-raised salmon. The 5 of wild fish is already decreasing.
Eventually, many types of wild fish could go 6 . What will we do then? 7 of fish farming also say that farm-raised fish is unhealthy for humans. They say the fish contains dangerous chemicals. They also blame the issue on fish farming because it pollutes the water. Another criticism is that farm-raised fish can spread diseases to wild fish.
Some people say that the farming methods being used now hasn’t 8 enough fish anyway. Instead of putting fish farms in lakes or near the coast, they say that the fish farms should be moved far out into the ocean. Several countries have already 9 with deep-ocean farms. In the future, fish farms might be large cages that move across the ocean.
Like most things, there is both a good and a bad side to fish farming. Fish farming may help to 10 millions of people. At the same time, however, fish farming may damage the environment.

Every year, 1 4 million people die prematurely due to household air pollution. Many die from 2 linked to breathing in smoke from kerosene (煤油), wood and charcoal fires, which are commonly used in the developing world for cooking and heating.
“Household air pollution is one of the world’s greatest public health 3 and it is especially harmful for children,” says Martina Otto, Head of Secretariat of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Here’s a closer look at this issue.
How widespread is household air pollution?
Worldwide, nearly one in three people cook on inefficient stoves or over open fires, 4 in harmful smoke from so-called solid fuels such as wood, charcoal and animal dung. The problem is 5 serious in Africa, where nearly four in five people are exposed to household air pollution. That is part of a larger air pollution crisis. Some 99 percent of the world breathes household or outdoor air that the World Health Organization considers 6 .
Who 7 the most from household air pollution?
Household air pollution is devastating for everyone. It led to the premature deaths of an estimated 3.1 million people in 2021. Children are especially 8 because they breathe at a faster rate than adults-meaning they absorb more pollutants-and their immune systems are still 9 , leaving them less able to fight off disease. In 2021, household air pollution led to the deaths of 237,000 children under five. Household air pollution also disproportionately affects women, as they are most often doing the cooking. In Africa, women and children 10 for 60 percent of early deaths related to household air pollution, according to the International Energy Agency.

Imagine meeting a foreigner for the first time but he/she is fluent in your language. There may appear to be no 1 communication barrier. Would you adapt the tone of your voice, or the spacing of pauses in your speech? How about 2 your body language and facial expressions, depending on the background of the person in front of you?
These are just a small part of the changes in behavior that can improve your “cultural intelligence”, or CQ. There is growing evidence that suggests that they are well 3 learning.
“The number one predictor of your success in today’s 4 world is not your IQ, not your resume, and not even your expertise,” writes social scientist David Livermore. “It’s your CQ.”
Much of the research on CQ has been done by Professor Soon Ang with the Nanyang Technological University. In the late 1990s, her job was dealing with the “Y2K bug.” It was a software bug that was feared would bring down the world’s computer networks. Ang put together an international team of programmers to update computer systems in Singapore. They were some of the brightest 5 in the industry. However, Ang soon found that these people just couldn’t work together. Often, 6 members would appear to agree on a solution, but then carry it out in completely different ways. Clearly, it wasn’t a question of language skills or expertise. Instead, she saw that these employees were held back by each other’s cultural differences.
This would lead Ang to work with psychologist P. Christopher Earley. Together they built a theory of CQ. They defined it as “the capability to 7 effectively in a variety of cultural contexts.”
Someone with a low CQ might view everyone else’s behavior through his own cultural lens. If he comes from a more 8 environment, for instance, and notices that his Japanese colleagues are very quiet in a meeting, he may think that they are being unfriendly. In aviation, such cultural differences might cause a(n) 9 in communication between pilots and air traffic controllers. The consequences would be unthinkable.
A person at the top of the scale, meanwhile, might realize that silence is one of the 10 of respect. In Japanese culture, feedback often won’t be given unless it is asked for. As a result, he/she will offer suitable opportunities within the meeting for others to provide their opinions.

You Don’t Need More Than Two Years
Two years is nothing, but at the same time a lot can be 1 in two years. You can try a sport you’ve always wanted to start, and become great at it. You can start a morning routine and 2 your mood and stress at a deep level. You can meditate for a few minutes per day, become more self-aware and change the way you react to problems.
Two years is nothing and extremely easy to waste, but with small actions, substantial commitment and consistency, you can make it 3 . Two years being passive is a blink of an eye. Two years moving towards goals every single day is plenty of time. It’s just a matter of perspective. There is nothing that cannot be accomplished in two years with enough 4 .
You’re not too old for the things you were dreaming of doing when you were a kid. You can still do extreme sports if you wish to. You can start playing a musical instrument. In two years from now, you’ll be great at it if you really want to. Don’t let your past 5 who you are. You don’t have to be the same person you have always been. Don’t let fear control you. Don’t let the social standards confine you. Age is just a number, we should all empower our uniqueness and fight against our own 6 .
By doing things you love on a daily basis, even for a few minutes, you’ll learn to enjoy the journey. The days will become more than just a 7 to an end. You’ll see yourself evolving. If you had the choice between feeling great, energetic and in a 8 mood, versus feeling sleepy and moody, what would you choose?
It’s just a choice, which combined with small, even tiny actions like reducing meat or alcohol consumption, or simply drinking more water, walking the stairs or biking to the office, can do 9 . It’s not about the end goal. It’s about daily actions towards it. It has a lot to do with setting goals, but goals without actions are just wishes. The easiest way to reach goals is through daily and consistent small (even tiny) actions. It’s all about consistency, commitment, and regularity.
Success is not an event, it’s a process and a mindset. Small actions are putting you in the position of succeeding. Small actions make huge 10 . Look at yourself in the mirror in two years and you’ll think “that was quick!”

Research published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2017 shows that rivers 2 dump anywhere from a half to three million tons of plastic into the seas every year. According to the data, ten rivers alone carry 93 percent of the river-borne plastics that end up in the ocean. Go Recycling
No one looking at the state of Earth in 2023 can be in any doubt that we are facing three serious environmental problems: climate problem, loss of biodiversity (生物多样性) and pollution of air, soil and water. To solve the problems, we increase the use of electric cars, 1 greener eating and reduce plastic use. However, sometimes these solutions can be opposite to the expected goals. For instance, creating space for biofuel crops to give off fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases can, in fact, 2 increase the cutting down of trees. That means in most cases solutions aiming at one problem each time are 3 to be effective. And, what is perhaps lacking is a(n) 4 of how interlinked these problems are.
We should realize that a key 5 linking all the three problems is waste. The root cause of global warming is CO2, a waste gas. The seas are polluted by plastic and other waste products. We 6 forests, among other things, to grow more food — much of which goes to waste.
A shocking figure lies at the heart of our special report on our world — of the more than 100 billion tons of things that humans use each year, hardly 10% is recycled. That makes it obvious a full-range war on waste should be paid 7 attention. The situation requires our speedy moving away from the way of thinking — “take, make, throw” — towards a more recyclable one, which means we should begin 8 the products and when they reach the end of their useful lives, they can be recycled.
Solving the three problems calls for a huge transition with joint efforts. Governments must take the lead by introducing laws with the purpose of rewarding green practices, such as the 9 of waste. Industries can reduce, re-use and recycle wherever possible, and 10 themselves with suppliers and the like-minded to realize recyclable business models.

Every year, 1 4 million people die prematurely due to household air pollution. Many die from 2 linked to breathing in smoke from kerosene (煤油), wood and charcoal fires, which are commonly used in the developing world for cooking and heating.

根据上文“sometimes these solutions can be opposite to the expected goals”可推知,为生物燃料作物创造空间的想法可能事与愿违,可能会“大幅”增加对树木的砍伐,用副词significantly修饰动词increase,作状语。故填significantly。
3.考查形容词。句意:这意味着在大多数情况下,每次只针对一个问题的解决方案不太可能有效。根据上文“sometimes these solutions can be opposite to the expected goals”可推知,一些解决方案“不太可能”有效,用形容词unlikely作表语。故填unlikely。
