New AI is all about the eyes
Scientists made a new facial-recognition system (人脸识别系统) and it can tell 95 percent of people when they wear masks. What’s the secret? It’s all about your eyes. Marios says, “As we get older, our faces change a lot but our eyes doesn’t.” Now this technology ( 技术) is used to look for people. However, there is one big weakness (不足): it fails when people wear both a mask and sunglasses.

To treat depression (抑郁症), doctors can put a “happy switch (开关)” in patients’ heads to help them. Through the surgery, the doctors put two long lines of electrodes (电极) inside patients’ brain. Patients can control the happy switch through an app in their phones. When they feel down, they turn on the switch and then they will be happy. But is the switch safe enough? The surgery is really dangerous and doctors also have to make sure that patients don’t depend on it.
Thirsty Computers
ChatGPT is an AI and it can answer questions, tell stories and do much more. But it’s very “thirsty”. When ChatGPT works, its data center (数据中心) gets very hot. So workers have to use a lot of water to cool them down. ChatGPT is not the only one that needs data centers. There are more than 8,000 data centers in the world and the number is still growing. If AI keeps using water, we may have to “fight” with AI for water.
