There is an old saying that America and Britain are "wo nations divided by a common
language."No one knows exactly who said this, but it reflects the way many Brits feel about
American English. But are American and British English really so different?
Vocabulary
The most obvious difference between American and British English is vocabulary. There are
hundreds of everyday words that are different. For example,Americans go on vacatioa while Brits
go on holidays;New Yorkers live in apartments while Londoners live in flats. There are far more
examples than we can talk about here.Fortunately, raost Americans and Brits can usually guess the
meaning through the context of a sentence.
Past Tense Verbs
You'll also find some differences with past forms of irregular verbs. The past tease of"learn"in
American English is“learned".British English bas the option(选铎)of"learned”or“learnt'".The
same rule applies to“dreamed'and“dreamt”,%oumned”and "bumt",and "leaned”and"eanf".

Spelling
There are hundreds of slight spelling differences between British and American English.Noah
Webster,an author, politician and teacher, made an effort to reform English spelling in the late 1700s.
Webster wanted to spell words the way they sounded. You can see Webster's legacy()in
the American spelling of words like color (from colour),honor (from honour),and labor(from
labour).
Not So Different After All
British and American English have far more similarities than differences. With the exception of
some regional dialects, most Brits and Americans can understand each other without too much
difficulty. They watch each other's TV shows, sing each other's songs and read each other's books.
They even make fun of each others'accents.

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to
get more from the vegetables you already eat?A research shows that when it comes to vegetsbles,
it's not only how much we eat,but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other
nutrients that enter our body.
Mauy studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye
problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198
Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red
vegetables."There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,"says Steven K.Clinton,a
professor at Ohio State University."For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can
be helpful."
A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the
table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking
way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost.In January, another report said that boiling was better for
carrots than frying or serving them raw.Frying was the worst way to cook.

salt-can make the food taste better.

More than 10 miliion Chinese cuitural relics have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen
and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949.About 1.67 million pieces
are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost
Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.
Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States,
Europe,Japan and Southeast Asian coutries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British
useum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.
The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back.In some cases,
private collectors dorated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official
channels(g道)切demand the returu of relics.
In 2003,a priceiess bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in
Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army.over 140 years ago.Macao
entrepreneur()Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and
then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
Aithough buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is
always a big neadache.
In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural
relics lost 'overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a
database()collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with
many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics
by working closely with several international organizations.

As new year apprcaches, crowds around the world may be expecting fireworks to light up the
sky.But the fireworks couid finally lose their appeal with the growing use of drones (for
iight shows. One obvious example was drone light show in the opening ceremony of Tokyo
Olympics.
Oilie Howitt,a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London's
new year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were
increasingly able to fly in greater density and for longer.Howitt also said there were benefits of
drones,"They give out no pollutants, they're reusable, and there's no fallout or that kind of thing. So
in that sense they are a very sensible choice."
Robert Neff, the generai manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display
at the harbor was down to a number of factors, inciuding the impact of fireworks on animals-from
wildiife to the pets of boat owners."They've often commented on how much 3uffering is caused to
their pets by the fireworks,"he said.
But not everyone agrees.Hans Rosting,a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association
said drones could alsc pose environmental probiems."Suggestions are that drones have less of an
impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (
batteries which are known not to be all that "green',"he said."The impact of firework use cn the
environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that
there is likeiy to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by
fireworks at an event."
And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approvaf
from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn't mean shutting off fireworks. The
bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace.Meanwhile, others prefer the chance
to tell stories in the sky by using a series of image.
