After working seven years in finance in Chile, I started questioning my career choice. In the man-dominated finance world, it was hard for me to climb the ladder. I decided to make a change. So I left my job, wondering what would be my next step. The following year witnessed me taking various classes to find what I was passionate about until the science of making bread appealed to me, which brought me waves of excitement.
In 2017, my husband and I moved to Lansdale, where I got a certificate from a 12-week general baking program. I had intended to open a bakery, but the high rent and the slight chance of gaining money soon discouraged me from taking a risk. When seeing that baking bread was a locally lost art, I figured that teaching baking classes could be my choice. Yet, my accent and my born shyness put me at disadvantage in public speaking. At the critical moment, my husband was the one who told me,“You can do this.”
In 2018, I rented space in Lansdale and created Vituperio Artisan Breads & Studio. I started small by offering free classes, not knowing whether I could make it. To deal with my initial nervousness, I approached teaching like I were an actor until I got myself comfortable in the class. In this way I not only tested myself but also learnt about what those attendants were interested in and capable of, thus attracting more people to my baking classes. All the classes were in person until March 2020, when I had to switch to teaching online. People told me it was a blessing and a joy to be able to make tasty bread during the pandemic.
As an immigrant, I took the initial leap of faith down a new path to start a business from scratch, hard as it might be. Looking forward, I'd like to bring more teens into the studio to give them the skills to consider a career in this field.

A. Her previous experience in finance.
B. The declining house rent in the area.
C. The local people's desire for baking skills.
D. Her husband's support at the crucial moment.
26. How did the author try to get over her early nervousness?
A. By behaving like a performer in class.
B. By pretending to be comfortable in public.
C. By transferring to teaching baking online.
D. By offering small classes to the attendants.
27. What did the author think about her experience?
A. Smooth. B. Valuable. C. Ordinary. D. Regretful.

The Future of Dairy Farming: Robot Milkers
John Fendrick is the owner of the farm. He inspects the progress of the animals by looking at a computer screen. That is all he has to do.“The door opens up, they walk in, and they get milked. The door opens up, and they walk out.”
The robot does all the work. It uses a laser to find each teat(乳头)-the place on the cow where the milk comes out. The robot then cleans the teat and connects a milking tube to it. The robot also tests the milk for possible contamination (污染). If it finds a problem, it rejects the milk. When the amount of milk coming out of the cow slows, the machine knows to stop, and sends the cow on its way.
Milking robots are becoming popular among dairy farmers in the United States, Europe and Australia. John Fendrick says the robots have changed life on a dairy farm.“ You are giving the freedom back. So it allows me or the people working for me to actually do other things on the farm.”
Most dairy farmers must milk their cows two times a day, early in the morning and late at night. The animals are milked every day in good weather or bad. But Mr. Fendrick's cows do not follow such a schedule. They stay in the field until they want to be milked by the robot. Some of them come to be milked in the middle of the night.
Mr. Fendrick doesn't even need to be there to watch his cows being milked. He can watch from his telephone. He can learn when each cow was milked and how much she produced. He can also learn if a cow has not been milked for a long time.
And he says that is a good thing. “I don't like to milk.” With the robot, he can turn his attention to other things. He gets about 475 litres of milk a day, and he never has to touch a cow.

Online programs to fight depression are already commercially available. While they sound efficient and cost-saving, a recent study reports that they're not effective, primarily because depressed patients are not likely to engage with them or stick with them.
The study looked at computer-assisted cognitive(认知的) behavioural therapy (CBT) and found that it was no more effective in treating depression than the usual care patients receive from a primary care doctor.
Traditional CBT is considered an effective form of talk therapy for depression, helping people challenge negative thoughts and change the way they think in order to change their moods and behaviours. However, online CBT programs have gained in popularity, with the attraction of providing low-cost help wherever someone has access to a computer.
A team of researchers from the University of York conducted a randomized (随 机 的) control trial with 691 depressed patients from 83 physician practices across England. The patients were split into three groups: one group received only usual care from a physician while the other two groups received usual care from a physician plus one of two computerized CBT programs. Participants were balanced across the three groups for age, sex, educational background, severity and duration of depression, and use of antidepressants(抗抑郁药).
After four months, the patients using the computerized CBT programs had no improvement in depression levels over the patients who were only getting usual care from their doctors.
“It's an important, warning note that we shouldn't get too carried away with the idea that a computer system can replace doctors and therapists,”says Chris Dowrick, a professor of Primary Medical Care at the University of Liverpool. “We do still need the human touch or the human interaction, particularly when people are depressed.”
“Being depressed can mean feeling lost in your own small, negative, dark world,” Dowrick says. Having a person, instead of a computer, reach out to you is particularly important in fighting that sense of isolation. “ When you're emotionally fragile, you're even more in need of a caring human being,” he says.
32. What does the recent study say about online CBT programs?
A. Patients may not be able to carry them through for an effective cure.
B. Patients cannot engage with them without the use of a computer.
C. They can save patients the trouble of visiting physicians.
D. They have been well received by a lot of patients.
33. What has made online CBT programs increasingly popular?
A. Their effectiveness in combating depression.
B. The low efficiency of traditional talk therapy.
C. Their easy and inexpensive access to patients.
D. The recommendation by primary care doctors.
34. What is Professor Dowrick's advice concerning online CBT programs?
A. They should not be neglected in primary care.
B. Their effectiveness should not be overestimated.
C. They should be used by strictly following instructions.
D. Their use should be encouraged by doctors and therapists.
35. Which is more important to an emotionally fragile person?
A. A positive state of mind. B. Appropriate medication.
C. Timely encouragement. D. Human interaction.

Ever since I can remember, I've always been shy. The thought of talking to new people or being the center of attention made my heart race and palms sweat. As I entered middle school, this shyness turned into social anxiety, making it even harder for me to interact with my peers(同龄人).
One day, during a class presentation, I stumbled(结巴)over my words and everyone laughed. I felt extremely ashamed. That only made my social anxiety worse, and I started avoiding speaking in front of others.
My parents noticed my struggle and suggested I talk to our family therapist(治疗专家), Dr. Smith. At first, I hesitated, but I knew I needed help. During our first period, Dr. Smith explained that social anxiety was a common issue and there were ways to overcome it. She recommended some effective treatments. Over the next few months, I attended weekly treatment with Dr. Smith. Slowly but surely, I began to feel more confident in myself. As part of the treatment, Dr. Smith encouraged me to take part in school events and clubs that interested me. It was terrifying to put myself out there, but I knew it was necessary for my growth.

53. B 这小小几步(the short walk)对主人公来说是人生中最难的斗争。fight 指的是 his struggle against paralysis。
54. C 现在主人公能借助步行器走动。pull over 靠边停车,靠岸;li e still 躺着不动;get around 到处走走,逃避,说服,传开来(等于 get round),有办法应付;dress up打扮,装饰。
55. A 他现在可以自己刷牙,刮胡子,借助步行器走动。只有瘫痪的人才能懂得这些日常小事是了不起的成就。
写作
第一节
Good afternoon, everyone,
I am honored to get first prize in the English speech contest.
I think it was my determination and efforts that contributed to my success in the contest. In the last two years, I have tried my best to practice my spoken English. And my English teacher’s encouragement and help made me who I am today.
In a word, all I want to say is that we mustn’t give up whatever we decide to do. Only if we persevere can we achieve our goals.
Thank you very much!
第二节
A few days later, a school speech contest was to be held. Dr. Smith had encouraged me to participate, so I decided to give it a try. I prepared for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my lines. On the day of the contest, my heart was pounding, but I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. I looked out into the audience and saw my classmates, friends, and family all there to support me. I smiled and began my speech.
After the contest, I went to visit Dr. Smith happily. She congratulated me on my speech and said that I had made great progress. She also reminded me that social anxiety was still there, but that it was now under control. She encouraged me to keep up the good work and to continue to face my fears.
