Step 1 Grammar exploration
(1) Read the questions with can or could in 3a. Analyze the sentence structure.
Can / Could + + +其他成分?
(2) Work on 3a. Discuss in pairs and complete the table.
· Which questions are used for making requests? Write R for requests.
· Which questions are used for asking for permission? Write P for permission.
· What are their differences?
· If you want to say yes to the question, how do you answer it?
· If you have to say no to the question, how do you answer politely?

【注意】提出请求和征询许可的区别主要在于谓语动词/主语人称的不同;
在拒绝别人时,除了表示抱歉外,还需要给出不得不拒绝的理由(常用
, , ,等阐明理由),这样才更礼貌得体。
Step 2 Grammar exercises
(1) Underline the personal pronouns in 3b.
(2) Work on 3b. Choose the best question to complete each conversation.
(3) Check in pairs.
(4) Discussion: What’s the relationship in each conversation?
(教师引导学生思考四个对话中的人物关系。关注说话人的语气差异,进一步体会目标语法的适用功能。例如:第三个对话可以判断为发生在父母与孩子之间,父母直接用“No, you can’t.”回答孩子晚归的请求,并给出了拒绝的正当理由;第三、四个对话的语气虽有差别,但都表明,拒绝他人时应当给出理由,使得回答更易被人接受,也更礼貌得体。)
Step 3 Grammar in use
(1) Read the instructions of 3c.(根据场景用can或could创编对话)
(2) Ask and answer:
T: Read the first situation. Where are you?
S: At my friend’s home.
T: What do you want to do?
S: Call my parents.
T: But your phone is dead. What do you need to do?
S: Borrow my friend’s phone.
T: Do you need to ask for permission? If so, how?
S: Yes. I can ask “Can / Could I use your phone?”
(3) Work on 3c.
(4) Work in pairs. Make up conversations for each setting, using can or could.
S1: It’s so much fun studying together. Can you stay here until 10 o’clock?
S2: I don’t know. I have to ask my parents.
S1: You can call them and ask them if it’s OK.
S2: Good idea! Oh, my phone is dead. Could I borrow yours?
S1: Of course. Here you are.
S2: Thanks!
