应用文之英语语言学习话题 ( Part I 以读促写 ) My full name is Michal Ryszard Wojcik. I live in Poland and Polish is my native language. I am a mathematician and an enthusiast of English. I learnt English very well and now I want to share my experience with other people. I had my first contact with English when I was six. My dad inspired me to listen to the songs of The Beatles (甲壳虫乐队). I listened to them every day for the next seven years. In the beginning I could understand nothing of what they were singing. But soon I started to understand individual words. Later I got a book with the words of all their songs. I read the book many times. I learnt many songs by heart. I sang the songs to myself. It became my dream to learn English well so that I could understand The Beatles. So The Beatles were my first motivation. When I was 13 years old, I started reading science fiction. The books were all American. As I read in Polish, I was more and more eager to read the books in English. Somehow I felt that in English the books would be even more interesting and reading would be more exciting. I finally decided to read books in English. I learnt every new English word that I met.With each new word I felt closer to my goal. With each word I felt that my reading ability was improving. Each word added to my confidence. At some point I read my first whole book in English and I understood it. That moment was a breakthrough in my life. I knew that I had broken a barrier, and got into a new world. When I read in English, I have not only the pleasure of reading, but also the pleasure of using English and learning English. At the present time I study mathematics. Most of the books I use are in English. I discovered that my knowledge of English is very important for me to learn mathematics. Without English I would be limited to the few books which are in Polish, and there are really few of them. English has given me so much satisfaction and pleasure and also I find it so useful in my scientific pursuit that I decided to share my methods and experience with other people. To learn English well, I make sure to practice every day by listening to English radios, reading short stories, and trying to speak with friends whenever possible. Using language apps also helps me remember new words easily. Learning English has not only added to my confidence but also brought me new friends and opportunities. It has taught me that with patience and practice, anything is possible. For example, I used to fail to speak out due to my poor pronunciation, despite being pretty good at English grammar. Luckily, with the help of my teacher, I gradually made progress. Mr. Meng told me to focus on expressing myself rather than the pronunciation alone. It did work and after a lot of training I could speak out in front of the classmates clearly, which really added to my confidence. However, I'm far from being fluent. I'm going to practice more if I want to make more improvements. As the old saying goes,"Practice makes perfect." I truly believe I will be proficient in English speaking one day.
