Jim Johnson, a mail carrier, was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland, Westover and Westmore Hills neighborhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail. He knew all the kids and their pets by name. He carried in the groceries, he took out and unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn’t doing all that, Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns (草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now, the trust in local postal service lives on. In many communities, that trust is won every day when life — saving medicine, greeting cards, social security checks, college acceptance letters — even the bills — appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades, Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day. Butch, a dog who belonged to one of the neighbors, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day before, he got into the jump seat and they were off. On the route, Jim and Butch had become inseparable. Now, the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop, Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.
It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier. That’s what the postal service means to us.
36. What do we know about Jim Johnson from the first paragraph?
A. He’s open-minded. B. He’s sharp-eyed.
C. He’s warm-hearted. D. He’s strong-willed.
37. What does the underlined word “disparaged” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Refused. B. Criticized. C. Investigated. D. Suspended.
38. What did Jim do besides daily delivery on his final days of work?
A. He drove Butch to its owner.
B. He sent presents to his friends.
C. He prepared a retirement party.
D. He said goodbye to the neighbors.
39. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To remember a respected mail carrier.
B. To record an unforgettable experience.
C. To raise funds for the postal service.
D. To call for harmony in the community.
40. Which of the following best shows the relationship between Jim and the community?

After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (滑翔伞运动员) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to the earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. Besides, Thompson didn’t know if Kenneth would have enjoyed it. “He was not so keen on heights as I was,” she said. So she continued to watch the paragliders take flight and land.
Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, being a paraglider at the age of 80. Although some people got scared while flying, she said she just felt free. Thompson did her second paraglide when she turned 85, and raised nearly £2,000 for a local charity.
Before leaving Interlaken after her second flight, Thompson asked the organizers about the age limit for paragliding. They said, “Any age, as long as you’re fit.” Thompson, now 86, plans her third flight for when she is 90.
Thompson grew up living above her parents’ shop in Belfast. At 18, she helped in the shop while studying for her music diploma in Stranmillis University College in South Belfast. She started to teach the piano to local children, and at the height of her teaching she gave 70 lessons a week. She still has 15 pupils on her books. “Over the years I’ve had so many that I’m teaching their children now.”
Is she scared of getting older? “Fear? No. People say, ‘Isn’t getting old awful?’ I say, ‘No. You are free to do more things that you want to do.’” “People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that doesn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time, no matter where you are,” Thompson added.
41. What can we know about Thompson from the first two paragraphs?
A. She appreciated being alone.
B. She was crazy about paragliding.
C. She often worked overtime.
D. She didn’t fit in with her husband.
42. Which of the following best describes Thompson?
A. Courageous and optimistic.
B. Sensitive and open-minded.
C. Romantic and cautious.
D. Considerate and humorous.
43. Why does the author mention Thompson’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To compare different old people.
B. To inspire people to care for the old.
C. To show getting old isn’t unpleasant.
D. To erase doubts about old people’s health.
44. What can we learn from Thompson’s story?
A. Aging makes a difference.
B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
D. It’s never too late to fulfill a dream.
45. What did Thompson do at the age of 18?

My wife, Hannah, and I didn’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots got either over-watered or under-watered and was finally thrown away. But after my diagnosis (诊断) with glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mirch gave me a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pottery bowl. We placed the plant beside the living room window.
I told Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t turn yellow or brown or lose all its leaves a fortnight later, I was kind of pleased. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment.
Glioblastoma limited my ability to walk, making it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks. As a family physician, I was used to being the one who provided care instead of the one who received it — my diagnosis made me rely on help from other people — the great change left me unsettled. Watering the plant, small act though it was, taught me I could still be a caregiver.
Later, after I recovered from surgery and completed chemotherapy (化疗), I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it even doubled in height and its leaves were shiny. Both the tree and I were thriving (蓬勃发展).
Whenever I look at the bamboo, I make a point to think of those who have cared for and supported me. Even if my cancer returns and the plant outlives me, I hope it will comfort Hannah and remind her that our large community will continue to care for her after I am gone.
46. What usually happened to the couple’s houseplants?
A. They were given away.
B. They hardly survived.
C. They grew quite well.
D. They were properly cared for.
47. How did the author react when the plant remained healthy after two weeks?
A. He had a sense of achievement.
B. He suffered a sense of loss.
C. He felt completely useless.
D. He got encouraged.
48. Why did the author want to care for the bamboo himself?
A. His wife was too busy.
B. He had much time to kill.
C He hated to lose his old identity.
D. He had gained better gardening skills.
49. What message does the author seem to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Pride comes before a fall.
B. It’s family that matters most
C. Kindness is the key to a happy life.
D. The world never lacks care and support
50. It can be inferred from the passage that the author .
A. will stop caring for the plant if his cancer returns
B. used to be more independent before the diagnosis
C. thinks the plant can completely replace his role in the family
D. believes his wife can’t take good care of the plant alone
【答案】46. B 47. A 48. C 49. D 50. B

四、阅读表达
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容按照每题的具体要求回答问题。(答案写在答题卡上相应题号后的横线上)
Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young athletes, she had Olympic dreams, but a serious illness kept her from competing in the Games. The disappointment didn’t stop her from going forward. Instead, she became interested in marathon swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-conditioned for spending long periods of time in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete against herself and the obstacles presented by distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion.
For ten years Nyad devoted herself to becoming one of the world’s best long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for the course. In 1972 she set another record by swimming 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to the coast of Florida. Then she broke a third record when swimming around Manhattan Island in 1975.
Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. After battling the water for two days, she had to give up for the sake of her own health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. For Nyad her strength of purpose was just as important as reaching Cuba. That is how she defined success. It did not matter that her swim came up short; she believed she had touched the other shore.
When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer, she continued to try new things---travelling the world as a reporter, writing books and giving public speeches about her life. Diana Nyad works to inspire others, just as she did when she swam the waters of the world.

A. He’s open-minded. B. He’s sharp-eyed.
C. He’s warm-hearted. D. He’s strong-willed.

38. What did Jim do besides daily delivery on his final days of work?
A. He drove Butch to its owner.
B He sent presents to his friends.

B. Jim was just a stranger to most people in the community.
C. Jim was like a family member to the community residents.

A. To compare different old people.
B. To inspire people to care for the old.
C. To show getting old isn’t unpleasant.
D. To erase doubts about old people’s health.
44. What can we learn from Thompson’s story?
A. Aging makes a difference.
B. Time and tide wait for no man.
