C Recently, a research on how a new virtual reality (VR虚拟现实) experience educated children about the fire disasters (灾害) was done. The new VR experience was developed by the University of South Australia, hoping to educate children to learn how to be safe in a fire. It presents a situation for children aged 10-12. In the situation, they are tasked to look after a friend’s dog just before a fire event begins. They take part in a set of problem-solving activities to help save and protect themselves and the dog. The findings showed that over 80% of children could calmly tell the advantages (优点) and disadvantages (缺点) of different choices. They also learned to make wise decisions to protect themselves from a fire. Children thought it especially important and meaningful, because 91% of them didn’t have knowledge of fires at the beginning, and 67% had said that they were too young to make safety decisions in a fire. The researchers believed such VR experiences made it possible to engage, educate and empower the young. “As children born in modern times, they are interested in such technology and they can experience events in a real situation yet within a safe environment,” said Delene Weber, one of the researchers. “Well-designed VR can provide children with surprisingly valuable learning tools.” Meanwhile, because children have fewer life experiences, aren’t as physically strong, and are less likely to have learned much about fire safety, they’re often most at risk. However, the role that children play in the fire safety at their homes should not be underestimated (低估), “Children don’t need to be always waiting for help in disasters. With these VR experiences, we can make children understand the risks and realize they can help,” said Weber. 11. What’s the purpose of the new VR experience? A. To describe children’s reactions to fire disasters. B. To teach children to save themselves in a fire. C. To introduce ways of avoiding a fire to children. D. To increase children’s interest in VR experiences. 12. From the findings, what’s the children’s attitude (态度) towards the new VR experience? A. Doubtful. (怀疑的) B. Worried. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive. 13. Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word “engage” in Para 3? engage verb engaged, engaging. ① to draw one’s attention and keep them interested ②to give somebody a job ③ to begin fighting with somebody ④ to fit one part of a machine into another so they can work A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 14. From Para.3, we mainly get to know the ______ of the new VR experience. A. development B. advantages C. quality D. introduction 15. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? A. Children can do nothing in the fire safety at their homes. B. VR experiences are mainly designed for children in high school. C. Well-designed VR can offer children amazingly valuable learning tools. D. 91% of children believed they weren’t old enough to make safety decisions. D Taihu Tunnel, 10.79 kilometres long and 43.6 metres wide, has been the longest underwater tunnel in China. It stands out as one of the “2022 China’s Top 100 Buildings in the New Era”. When building Taihu Tunnel, the project team faced many challenges, such as high safety risks and time limit. To deal with them, they made workable plans. They divided the tunnel construction (建造) into 19 parts. The construction of each part mainly took four steps. Step 1 Remove. The team built a cofferdam to remove water from the area, so the workers could go inside and do their work in dry conditions (情况). Step 2 Clear. The team dug deep into the lake bed, and cleared the soil and stones out in order to make space for the next step. Step 3 Build. The team built the floor, walls and roof of the tunnel in this step. Step 4 Backfill. The team put the soil and stones back. Then this part of the tunnel was buried deep down the lake bed. ⑦The construction of the 19 parts was streamlined. The project team used a new method. Each work group only needs to complete the certain step. For example, when they finish the certain step in part 1, they will move to part 2 and repeat their work. Different work groups cooperated well with each other. From part to part, the construction started from the opposite ends, and got connected somewhere in the middle. The construction took about four years to complete, shorter than people had expected. ⑧The drivers’ safety is fully considered in Taihu Tunnel. There are 200,000 LED lights on the ceiling of the tunnel. They show vivid pictures of blue sky, starry night and so on. The pictures can help drivers fight tiredness and travel through the tunnel safely. Besides, there are two systems in the tunnel. The police can check the traffic situation through a monitoring system. If traffic accidents happen, the police can give instructions and warn drivers in the tunnel over an audio system to prevent further accidents. The construction of Taihu Tunnel shows great value in engineering and the tunnel brings much convenience to people living nearby. 16. Which picture shows how a “cofferdam” works? A. B. C. D. 17. How does the writer introduce the underlined sentence in paragraph 7? A. By listing numbers. B. By giving an example. C. By asking questions. D. By comparing opinions. 18. The construction of Taihu Tunnel ______. A. was divided into four parts B. took more time than people had expected C. started from the middle of the lake D. was completed by using a new method 19. What can we learn from Paragraph 8? A. Pictures in the tunnel can help keep drivers safe. B. Drivers can control the LED lights in the tunnel. C. The police can warn drivers through a monitoring system. D. An audio system can help drivers check the traffic situation. 20. What is the main purpose of the passage? 根据“What you need: clear soda water, a glass, some raisins”和“What you need: black pepper (黑胡椒粉), a plate, water, dish soap”可知,两个实验都没有用到盐。 根据“…they break and the gas is given off into the air. This makes the raisins lose buoyancy (浮力) and fall back down to the bottom of the glass.” 根据“The more pepper, the more fun.” 根据“So, the pepper moves quickly from the center of the plate to the edge.” A。 B One day, Confucius was walking along a road with his student Zilu. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 14.
