Tom Sawyer Play Is an Adventure
A 35minute handclapping, footstomping musical version of a Mark Twain favorite returns with this Tall Stacks festival.
“Tom Sawyer:A River Adventure” has all the good stuff, including the fence painting, the graveyard, the island and the cave.It is adapted by Joe McDonough, with music by David Kisor. That's the local stage writing team that creates many of the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati's original musicals, along with the holiday family musicals at Ensemble Theatre.
This year Nathan Turner of Burlington is Tom Sawyer, and Robbie McMath of Fort Mitchell is Huck Finn.
Turner,a 10thgrader at School for Creative and Performing Arts,is a familiar presence on Cincinnati's stages. He is a star actor of Children's Theatre, having played leading roles in“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “The Wizard of Oz”,and is fresh from Jersey Production “Ragtime”.
McMath is a junior at Beechwood High School. He was in the cast of “Tom Sawyer”when it was first performed and is a Children's Theatre regular, with five shows to his credit. This summer he attended Kentucky's Governor's School for the Arts in Musical Theatre.
Note to teachers:Children's Theatre has a study guide demonstrating how math and science can be taught through“Tom Sawyer”.For downloadable lessons, visit the official website of Children's Theatre.

At the beginning of the 16th century,Leonardo da Vinci returned to Florence after almost two decades in the employ of Ludovico Sforza,Duke of Milan.Nearing 50,Leonardo was already famed for his scientific gift and artistic achievements.Combining practicality and observation,Leonardo applied the principle of sapere vedere (knowing how to see,in Latin) into as many areas of human enquiry as it led him.
Cesare Borgia, the ambitious son of Pope Alexander Ⅵ,became Leonardo's financial supporter in 1502.One of the first tasks given to Leonardo was to create a map of the city of Imola, near Bologna.Borgia had taken control of the city in 1499.It was a key success for the young commander.Controlling the city would require understanding its geography and landmarks, and Borgia wanted the map from the finest mind of Leonardo in order to do that.
In the 16th century city maps tended to be symbolic and often symbolic, enlarging the size of religious buildings.Leonardo's “Imola Plan” broke with this tradition, aiming to show the reality on the ground, and to provide a map that was of more practical use.
Leonardo applied a mapping technique developed by Florentine humanist Leon Battista Alberti, who suggested that a town should be mapped using polar coordinates (极坐标系).Starting with Alberti's technique,Leonardo adapted it to record more accurate distances, proportions, and relationships between features.
The city's public square was fixed in the middle of the grid(坐标方格).Historians believe that Leonardo collected data on the ground by starting at this central point and then using a compass (罗盘) and odometer (计程器) to measure streets and landmarks.Using geometry,he could then fill in the rest of the map.
Leonardo's techniques gave rise to the first map that used data to accurately show a “flattened city” as it might be seen from above, what is called an ichnographic (平面图的) map today, perhaps the most familiar type of map used today.Leonardo's measurements still hold up: According to historians, the “Imola Plan” can still be used to navigate the city five centuries later.

A.They were always of a large size.
B.They were often created by religious groups.
C.They gave special attention to certain landmarks.
D.They continued the tradition of showing reality.
根据第三段中的“In the 16th century city maps tended to be symbolic and often symbolic, enlarging the size of religious buildings.”
6.From whom did Leonardo da Vinci get inspiration when carrying out the “Imola Plan”?
A.Cesare Borgia.
B.Ludovico Sforza.
C.Leon Battista Alberti.
D.Pope Alexander Ⅵ.
根据第四段中的“Leonardo applied a mapping technique developed by Florentine humanist Leon Battista Alberti, who suggested that a town should be mapped using polar coordinates (极坐标系).”

LOS ANGELES,Nov.12 (Xinhua)—Legendary comic book writer Stan Lee has died at the age of 95,according to media reports on Monday.
Lee,born in Stanley Lieber on Dec.28th,1922,began his career in 1939 and joined the Marvel Comics in 1961.
He is considered as one of the most legendary names in the history of comic books and the leading creative force behind the rise of Marvel Comics. He cocreated iconic fictional characters such as SpiderMan,XMen,the Avengers, and many more.
Lee's characters often have super powers, but they also have weaknesses. They were humans, not gods. They not only struggled to save the world, but also to pay their bills, make friends, and hold jobs. This made Marvel comic book heroes stand apart from its competitor DC,which produced the seemingly perfect heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman. Those superheroes have been adapted into blockbuster films, most of which were made after Disney acquired Marvel in a 4billiondollar deal in 2009.
In a statement,Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company said Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created.
Marvel also praised Lee on its website by putting on one of Lee's famous quotes, which goes,“I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comicbook writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people's lives.Without it,they might go off the deep end.I feel that if you're able to entertain, you're doing a good thing.”
Praise from his Hollywood peers and colleagues was generous.President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige appreciated Lee's unparalleled impact on the industry.“No one has had more of an impact on my career than Stan Lee,” Feige said.“Our thoughts are with his family and the millions of fans who have been forever touched by Stan's genius, charisma and heart.”

Psychologist Susan Levine,an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills.Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents' income, education and the amount of parent talk,Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 childparent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not,on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of children in the study played with puzzles at one time.Higherincome parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.

故填where。

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn't mind paying for it.After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age,and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20,well below the market price.Yet,the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15.The porter was struggling to make even one time's meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn't deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband,“I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me.I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home,he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him,“Where is that old thief? This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them.It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”
When the porter heard the angry wife asking,
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes,
One possible version:
When the porter heard the angry wife asking,he turned back. The porter replied,“Madam, please calm down.I'm not a thief. That poor old man was sick since last month. He couldn't earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Therefore,he fell down and handed me $15,saying,‘I have taken an advance for this delivery, and you deliver the goods to the couple's home.’ Madam,he was poor and hungry, but he was an honest man.I was just on the way to completing the old man's last delivery to your home.”
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes, and the wife felt so ashamed that she had no courage to look her husband in the eyes.Suddenly she rushed to the market.Half an hour later, the wife came back with some food in her hand. She passed the food on to the porter, and said sorry to the porter, saying that she shouldn't suspect them, and took them as thieves. At last, the porter took the goods to their house, and the rich couple changed their attitude to the man like the porter.
