I started sewing clothes for my dolls when I was 7. My mother showed me how to stitch with a needle and thread, and it was my favorite pastime when it was too cold and snowy to play outside. As a teenager, I began to design and sew my own outfits. I cut out paper patterns to construct dresses and skirts, and I’d sit at the old sewing machine for hours. In my late 20s, I began to buy used and vintage clothes to upcycle and refashion. My favorite places to buy vintage clothes are thrift shops (旧货店) and church rummage sales (教堂义卖). However, about 10 years ago, when I was ripping out the silk lining (内衬) from a beautiful long blue evening dress, I stopped. There was a hidden pocket in the front that I failed to notice as I merrily ripped at the seams. I pulled out an old photo of a young woman wearing the very same blue evening dress. A long silver chain necklace hung gracefully down the front of the dress, and she was holding a black purse. She had a soft smile, and she looked to be in her early 20s. Somebody else wore this dress many years ago. Who was she? Did she wear it to the theater? To a fancy dinner party? And I was now tearing it apart. I felt guilty. I mentioned my concerns and guilt to my daughter. She said, “Mom, you should be proud of your upcycling and your sewing creations. You are keeping clothes out of the landfill (垃圾填埋场), and you’re creating new fashions. Consider it a bonus (意外收获) if you find objects in the pockets. The clothes are talking to you!” I decided to pay homage to this upcycling discovery -and the many others I’ve found over the years — by displaying them on a bulletin board in my sewing room. These discoveries have made me enjoy refashioning and upcycling clothes even more. But I have learned to be a little gentler when I rip seams open with my scissors, and I approach pockets more carefully. 4. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about? A. The author’s mom’s influence on her. B. The author’s growing love for sewing. C. The author’s preference for vintage clothes. D. The author’s deep interest in design. 5. How did the author feel immediately after discovering the photo in the dress pocket? A. Excited. B. Regretful. C. Amazed. D. Nervous. 6. What does the author’s daughter think of upcycling old clothes? A. It’s a waste of time. B. It’s a challenging hobby. C. It’s a professional business. D. It’s environmentally friendly. 7. What does the author do with her upcycling discoveries made over the years? A. Sells them online. B. Donates them to thrift shops. C. Shows them in her sewing room. D. Gives them to her daughter as gifts. B 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第一段中“I’ve loved to sew all my life. I started sewing clothes for my dolls when I was 7. (我一生都喜欢缝纫。我7岁的时候就开始给我的娃娃缝制衣服。)”以及第一段中“As a teenager, I began to design and sew my own outfits. I cut out paper patterns to construct dresses and skirts, and I’d sit at the old sewing machine for hours. (十几岁的时候,我开始设计和缝制自己的衣服。我在纸上剪出图案来做连衣裙和裙子,我会在旧缝纫机前坐上几个小时。)”以及第二段中“In my late 20s, I began to buy used and vintage clothes to upcycle and refashion. ( 在我快30岁的时候,我开始购买旧衣服和旧衣服来升级和改造。)”可知,前两段主要描述了作者从7岁开始为娃娃缝制衣服,到青少年时期自己设计缝制服装,以及在20多岁时开始购买二手和复古衣物进行再利用和改造,这些都体现了作者对缝纫的热爱是逐渐增长的。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Somebody else wore this dress many years ago. Who was she? Did she wear it to the theater? To a fancy dinner party? And I was now tearing it apart. I felt guilty. (很多年前就有人穿过这件衣服了。她是谁?她穿去看戏了吗?去参加一个高级晚宴?现在我把它撕碎了。我感到内疚。)”可知,作者在改造一件蓝色晚礼服时,意外发现了口袋里的一张旧照片,这让她感到内疚,因为她正在拆解别人曾经穿过的衣物,这种内疚感体现了她的后悔。故选B。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Mom, you should be proud of your upcycling and your sewing creations. You are keeping clothes out of the landfill(垃圾填埋场), and you’re creating new fashions. Consider it a bonus(意外收获) if you find objects in the pockets. The clothes are talking to you! 根据最后一段中“I decided to pay homage to this upcycling discovery -and the many others I’ve found over the years—by displaying them on a bulletin board in my sewing room. (我决定通过在我的缝纫室的公告板上展示这些再利用的发现——以及多年来我发现的许多其他物品——来向它们致敬。)”可知,作者决定将这些年来在改造衣物过程中发现的小物件展示在缝纫室的公告板上,以此来纪念这些发现,这表明她将这些发现展示在她的缝纫室。故选C。 C Most children love stories. Stories are entertaining and fun, but can they be more than just fun? Findings from a new study led by Rebecca de Leeuw, an assistant professor at the Radboud University, indicate stories in movies can also be meaningful for children. The researchers contacted children between 4 and 15years old after they watched the Disney film Inside Out. This film takes place mainly in the head of an 11-year-old girl, where her emotions — Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, personified as different characters — conflict on how to help her best in her new life after her family moves. The story follows the “hero’s journey” — a classical narrative (叙事的) framework, which involves a hero who goes on an adventure, overcomes challenges, and return s changed. So the research team chose this film. When making this film, the film-makers had in-depth discussions with psychologists to make the emotion animation consistent with scientific knowledge. The research team asked mostly open-ended questions to encourage the children to share their thoughts, including the key question: “Was there a part of the movie you had to think about?” Children looked at stills of important scenes and were invited to explain in their own words what happened. If they liked, they also rewatched scenes of the film. While watching, children made sense of the feelings, motives and behavior of characters in the film, using their social intelligence skills. They also further developed these skills when they were challenged in making sense of the story. Children also mentioned they appreciated seeing acts of pity, kindness, love and bravery in the film. Just like adults, they were even touched to tears by these qualities. One of the children in the study even expressed that Joy inspired her to never quit in her own life. The more insights children gained while watching, the more meaningful the story became for them. Altogether, stories in movies can be a quick way for children to gain life experience and wisdom. 8. Why did the research team choose the film Inside Out? A. It focuses on scientific knowledge. B. It is directed and produced by Disney. C. It is based on a girl’s emotional journey. D. It follows a typical story-telling structure. 9. How did the research team draw their conclusion? A. By interviewing children. B. By conducting experiments. C. By referring to previous studies. D. By making comparisons between two groups of children. 10. What were the children asked to do in the study? A. Share their personal favorite stories. B. Repeat touching scenes of the film. C. Voice their opinions about the story. D. Come up with questions on the film. 11. What can be concluded according to the findings? A. Stories in movies can increase children’s survival skills. B. Stories in movies would help children become mature. C. Stories in movies would improve children’s social interactions. D. Stories in movies can make children more intelligent academically. D 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第二段“The story follows the “hero’s journey” —a classical narrative (叙事的) framework, which involves a hero who goes on an adventure, overcomes challenges, and return s changed. So the research team chose this film.(故事遵循“英雄之旅”——一个经典的叙事框架,涉及到一个英雄的冒险,克服挑战,并改变回来。所以研究小组选择了这部电影)”可知,研究人员选择这部电影是因为该电影采用了一种经典的叙事结构。故选D。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“The researchers contacted children between 4 and 15years old after they watched the Disney film Inside Out.(研究人员在观看了迪士尼电影《头脑特工队》后,联系了4至15岁的儿童)”和第三段“The research team asked mostly open-ended questions to encourage the children to share their thoughts, including the key question: “Was there a part of the movie you had to think about?”(为了鼓励孩子们分享他们的想法,研究小组问了很多开放式的问题,其中包括一个关键问题:“电影中有你必须思考的部分吗?”)” 故选A。 根据第三段“The research team asked mostly open-ended questions to encourage the children to share their thoughts, including the key question: “Was there a part of the movie you had to think about?”(为了鼓励孩子们分享他们的想法,研究小组问了很多开放式的问题,其中包括一个关键问题:“电影中有你必须思考的部分吗?”)” 根据最后一段“Altogether, stories in movies can be a quick way for children to gain life experience and wisdom.(总之,电影中的故事可以让孩子们快速获得生活经验和智慧)”可知,研究发现,电影故事能加速孩子们思想的成熟。故选B。 D Earthquakes are among the most mysterious and terrifying natural disasters. While we can sometimes predict major ones, others strike without warning, devastating cities and causing fires, landslides and tsunamis. With climate change leading to increased wildfires and hurricanes, could it also make earthquakes more common? The most dangerous earthquakes are tectonic earthquakes, caused by the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates. These plates shift about 1.5 centimeters per year due to internal heat, building pressure until they suddenly move, which releases energy and causes earthquakes. Unlike other disasters, it’s almost impossible to predict when earthquakes will happen, making planned evacuations next to impossible. Unfortunately, climate change could make quakes happen closer together and with more intensity, experts told Live Science. With global warming, glaciers are melting at an increased rate. When melted glacier water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises, said John Cassidy, an earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Victoria. More concerning than glacial-melt earthquakes are those that could be caused by an increase in sea level. As sea levels rise, pressure underwater on the seafloor also goes up, said Marco Bohnhoff, a geophysicist at GFZ Helmholtz Centre Potsdam and Free University Berlin in Germany. As water pressure spikes, the pressure on fault lines near the coast will also increase. Even if we stopped using greenhouse gases now, it would take up to 1,000 years for sea level rise to stop, Bohnhoff added. He predicts that over that time, the gaps between big coastal earthquakes will become shorter. Cassidy is uncertain if sea level rise will cause giant quakes to happen faster within our lifetimes. He emphasized that climate change will make them more dangerous. “It’s an important topic, and one that I’m sure we’ll see a lot of information coming out on in the coming months and years,” he said. “But no matter what we’ve discovered, it’s not good news.” 12. What does the article tell us about tectonic earthquakes? A They are easier to predict than others. B. They happen mostly near coastal areas. C. They result from the shifting of Earth’s plates. D. They rarely lead to other natural disasters. 13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. The land. B. The glacier. C. The quake. D. The sea. 14. What does Bohnhoff imply? A. Human actions have long-term effects. B. Coastal areas will be safer over time. C. Earthquakes will become more predictable. D. Sea level rise will eventually stabilize. 15. What’s the best title for the passage? A. The Formation and Prediction of Earthquakes B. Climate Change and Its Potential Impact on Earthquakes C. How Sea Level Rise Affects Coastal areas D. The Dangers of Tectonic Earthquakes 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第二段“The most dangerous earthquakes are tectonic earthquakes, caused by the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates.(最危险的地震是构造地震,由地球构造板块的运动引起)”可知,构造地震是由地球板块的移动导致的。 根据第四段“When melted glacier water flows off land and into the sea, the land that used to sit underneath it rises(当融化的冰川水从陆地流入大海时,曾经位于它下方的陆地会上升)”并结合语境可知,it指代的是前文提到的glacier (冰川)”,因为underneath it指的是“在冰川下方”,符合“冰川融化后其下方陆地上升”的逻辑。 根据第六段“Even if we stopped using greenhouse gases now, it would take up to 1,000 years for sea level rise to stop(即使我们现在停止使用温室气体,海平面上升也需要长达1000年才能停止)”可知,Bohnhoff 的话暗示了人类活动(使用温室气体)对环境的影响具有长期性,即使当下停止相关行为,其带来的海平面上升问题仍会持续很久。故选A。 Tips to reduce food waste Food waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and wastes the resources it takes to grow the food. ___16___. B I’ve loved to sew all my life. A. Gives them to her daughter as gifts. C Most children love stories. The story follows the “hero’s journey” — a classical narrative (叙事) framework, which involves a hero who goes on an adventure, overcomes challenges, and return s changed. D Earthquakes are among the most mysterious and terrifying natural disasters. A. They are easier to predict than others. D Sea level rise will eventually stabilize. 15. What’s the best title for the passage? A. The Formation and Prediction of Earthquakes B. Climate Change and Its Potential Impact on Earthquakes C. How Sea Level Rise Affects Coastal areas D.
