For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an effect on people’s emotions (情感). How you feel is controlled by many things. Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.
People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin. Vitamins are natural chemicals (化学物质) which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D.Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains (大脑) and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D.Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of this special chemical which makes them feel good. To help the people in these countries feel better, special “sunrooms” with artificial (人造的) lights have been built. People can go there and get “sunlight” for an hour or two!
The weather can also affect people’s emotions in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.
29.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor (因素) that can affect one’s emotions?
A.Weather. B.Actions of others.
C.Personality. D.Age.
30.Which of the following is true about vitamin D according to the passage?
A.It is a kind of artificial chemical.
B.It makes us worried by affecting our brains.
C.It is needed by us all to keep fit.
D.It is in the sunlight.
31.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.We feel good when we are in the bright cool weather.
B.We will be happy when we are caught in the rain.
C.All people in Norway and Sweden feel sad in winter.
D.The more vitamin D you have, the happier you’ll be.
32.What may be the best title for this passage?
A.Why Do We Feel Sad?
B.The Weather Influences People’s Emotions
C.People Need More Vitamin D
D.We Can Hardly Change the Weather
【答案】29.D 30.C 31.A 32.B
【导语】本文主要介绍了人们的情绪会受到天气的影响。
29.细节理解题。根据“Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.”可知,影响人的情绪的因素不包括年龄。故选D。
30.细节理解题。根据“Vitamins are natural chemicals (化学物质) which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains (大脑) and makes us feel happy.”可知,我们都需要它来保持身体健康。故选C。
31.推理判断题。根据“Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant.”可知,我们在明媚、凉爽的天气里会感觉很好。故选A。
32.最佳标题题。根据“Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.”可知,本文主要介绍了天气会影响人们的情绪。故选B。
C
How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past? Aristotle may have written the first research results of myopia (近视) around 350B.C. Because their eyeballs are too long, people with this condition can see objects that are close by, but distant objects look blurry.
Neil Handley, a museum curator, said not much is known about how people dealt with myopia before the first lenses for nearsighted people were invented in the 15th century in Europe. And he noted that “even in the history of the invention of glasses, that is a late development.”
There are 13th-century European examples of handheld convex lenses (凸透镜) that were used to treat age-related vision loss known as presbyopia (We’d call them reading glasses today). But the technology wasn’t used to treat nearsightedness for another 200 years.
“Because of the way that lens is held, you can see through it, and the artist has caught the effect that the glass has,” Handley said. Myopia could be something of a modern condition. The number of nearsighted people has risen quickly in recent years, and researchers have predicted that half the world will be myopic by 2050. One study by the College of Optometrists found that myopia is more than twice as common among kids in the U.K. now than it was the 1960s.
Doctors are still trying to find out the cause behind this trend. Some have blamed (归咎于) genetic causes or an increase in studying and screen time.
It’s likely that myopia didn’t influence as many people in the past as it does now. Handley said the late creation of nearsighted glasses suggests that treating the small number of people with myopia wasn’t considered as a most important thing and that people could deal with myopia by making some changes in their lifestyle. Or, maybe there was more of an emphasis (强调) on putting people in jobs that were suited to their ability to see, he said.
For example, people with myopia were historically valued in artisan contexts, such as medieval European monasteries, where illuminating manuscripts (手稿) and painting required making tiny, exact brushstrokes. “The myopic person, far from being given some correction, was actually encouraged to remain in their myopic condition, because it was actually ideal for them doing this job. They don’t necessarily consider it as disability,” Handley said.
33.What does the underlined word “blurry” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Dark. B.Warm. C.Unclear. D.Uncomfortable.
34.The passage is developed by ________.
A.providing facts B.presenting causes C.comparing opinions D.making up stories
35.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.People in the past didn’t develop myopia.
B.People with myopia could also lead a normal life.
C.Myopia could be cured by changing people’s lifestyle.
D.Most jobs about art preferred nearsighted people than others.
36.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.Many causes lead to modern myopia. B.Myopia was not so troublesome in the past.
C.Nearsightedness is increasing at an amazing speed. D.Glasses for nearsighted people have developed a lot.
【答案】33.C 34.A 35.B 36.B
【导语】本文主要讲了在眼镜发明之前,人们近视的情况并不像现代社会这么严重,也不会影响正常生活。
33.词义猜测题。根据“Because their eyeballs are too long, people with this condition can see objects that are close by, but distant objects look blurry.”可知,因为他们的眼球太长了,有这种情况的人们可以看到近处的物体,但远处的物体会看起来很模糊,由此可知blurry的意思为“模糊的,不清楚的”,故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据“There are 13th-century European examples of handheld convex lenses…for another 200 years.”、“The number of nearsighted people has risen quickly in recent years, and researchers have predicted that half the world will be myopic by 2050.”以及“One study by the College of Optometrists found that myopia is more than twice as common among kids in the U.K. now than it was the 1960s.”可知,这些内容都是一项项的事实,所以文章是通过提供事实来展开的,故选A。
35.推理判断题。根据“Handley said the late creation of nearsighted glasses suggests that treating the small number of people with myopia wasn’t considered as a most important thing and that people could deal with myopia by making some changes in their lifestyle.”可知,即使近视,当时的人们依旧可以正常的生活。故选B。
36.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段中“How did nearsighted people manage in the pre-glasses past?”
D
Have you ever thought about living a zero waste lifestyle? Zero waste is a way of managing resources that focuses on reducing waste, protecting natural resources and stopping something bad from polluting the earth.
Lauren Singer started living a zero waste lifestyle in 2012 when she realized that her actions were actually against her values—caring for the planet. “I thought that caring was enough, but it turns out that my lifestyle was creating harm and contributing to the systems that I was actively talking about fighting against,” she said of her decision to create less waste.
So why is the zero waste lifestyle important? Living a zero waste lifestyle brings so many benefits that are worth considering:
For the environment:
By choosing to live a zero waste life, we have the power to reduce the bad influence of waste treatment methods such as landfills (垃圾填埋场), waste burning and ocean litter. This choice helps to protect the broken balance of ecosystems and our natural environment, so that we can help to build a healthier planet.
For people’s wallet:
A zero waste lifestyle requires us to be wise customers. For example, we should shop with a list or a reusable bag and buy local products in season. It is also about valuing what we have and finding creative ways to extend the life of our belongings. By reusing things, we not only save money in the long term but also reduce waste.
For the resources:
When we reduce unnecessary shopping and reuse materials, we play a role in protecting resources like energy, water and raw materials. It is a green way that makes sure we use what we need without running out of our limited resources. By acting like that, we try to make sure that enough resources are kept for future generations.
▲ :
By cutting waste sent to landfills and reducing production of goods using a large amount of energy, we are able to actively lower greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. The adoption of these environmentally friendly practices and the attention paid to waste reduction can make a lot of difference in our fight against climate change, which is seriously threatening our planet.
For our society:
The zero waste lifestyle has the power to bring social changes by increasing people’s awareness about waste management. It encourages a sense of responsibility and gives people the confidence to practice a new lifestyle. By spreading the message of waste reduction and environmental ideas, the lifestyle attracts others to join in.
In 2012, Lauren Singer started Trash for Tossers, a blog about her experience changing into zero waste living. Five years later, she founded Package Free, a shop full of products that support a green lifestyle. The products reduce packaging in their design and are made from materials that can either be reused, or recycled. “Anything to get closer to zero waste is making a difference. I hope more people can notice it.” Singer said.
37.From the passage, we know that ________.
A.Lauren Singer produced more waste before 2012 than she does at present
B.people who live a zero waste life can make more money than those who don’t
C.the products in Singer’s shop have no packaging in order not to produce waste
D.sending your waste to the landfills has a harmless influence on the environment
38.The writer may advise us to ________.

D.use many single-use products
39.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.For the better planet B.For the waste reduction
C.For the climate change D.For the humans’ health
40.What does this passage mainly tell us?
A.All of us need to develop a sense of responsibility towards future.

By spreading the message of waste reduction and environmental ideas, the lifestyle attracts others to join in.

Five years later, she founded Package Free, a shop full of products that support a green lifestyle.
