One thing needed for humans to live in space is food that can be grown outside of Earth.
Let’s look at some of the latest progress scientists have made in space farming.
Making small steps toward moon farming
Researchers at the University of Florida, US, have been able to grow plants in lunar soil. Although the thale cress ( 拟南芥 ) the crew planted grew slower than normal because of fewer nutrients (营养), this has been seen as a scientific breakthrough.
This scientific breakthrough is a step toward understanding how future explorers might be able to grow plants on the moon. It is also a key example of “solving some agricultural ( 农业 ) problems in certain areas on Earth.” said NASA administrator Bill Nelson.
Growing beef in orbit
Researchers at Israeli food-tech company Aleph Farms have been growing artificial (人造的) meat in space. In 2019, a team from the company was sent to the International Space Station to 3D print meat. Now they want to see if meat cells can grow naturally in space. The company is carrying out new tests to see how the cells work in zero gravity.
Testing for the best space rice
After a 23-day space journey on board, the Chang’e-5, 1,500 rice seeds have now successfully been planted on Earth and are growing in a greenhouse. They are set to be replanted at a research center of the South China Agricultural University, Guangdong province, at the end of the month, according to Global Times.
“The seeds have experienced special environments during the space travel, which affects the genetic variation (遗传变异) of rice seeds,” said Chen Zhiqiang, director of the lab center.
The research is seen as an important step to know which rice species have the genetics most suitable for space agriculture.
1. Which is TRUE about the research carried by scientists at the University of Florida?
A. It shows there’s no difference between the soil on Earth and that on Moon.
B. It proves that all the plants can survive on the Moon.
2
C. Plants will grow faster on the Moon than on Earth.
D. It can help solve some agricultural problems in certain areas on Earth.
2. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in the part “Growing beef in orbit”?
A. Meat cells B. A team from Aleph Farms
C. An Israeli food-tech company D. Astronauts in the International Space Station
2. Why do the rice seeds taken by Chang’e-5 matter a lot?
A. Astronauts can use them to create a new rice species.
B. Astronauts have successfully grown them on another planet.
C. They help find out factors which influence people hunger problems.
D. They will be used to find the most suitable rice to grow in space.
3. Which is the best title for this article?
A. How to grow plants in space B. Farming in space
C. Ways to save food in space D. Artificial space food

Will humans someday live and work on Mars(火星)?Many scientists think so. In fact, they are already working on plans to turn Mars into a new Earth.
Humans need three basic things to live: water to drink, air to breathe and food to eat. Because of the shortage of those above, it is impossible to live on Mars right now. Then how can we make Mars a right place for humans to live on? The answer is to change the environment of the planet so that it is similar to Earth's.
On Mars, the temperature is about -60℃. So one of the main purposes is to warm it up. One idea for warming Mars comes from a problem here on Earth — climate change. Most scientists agree that Earth is becoming warmer because of increased levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere(大气). We might create similar conditions on Mars by building factories that give off greenhouse gases. The gas will change the atmosphere on Mars. Rain will fall, and it may be possible to grow plants for food.
There will be many difficulties in changing Mars. The program could take many centuries, and the cost will be high. We have some of the technology, such as the ability to create greenhouse gases, but not the money. Anyway, life on Mars is a real possibility for future people.

After traveling more than seven months in space, Tianwen 1 is one step closer to Mars! Tianwen 1, China's first Mars probe(探测器),successfully entered Mars orbit(轨道)in February, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). It will stay in orbit for about three months before landing on the red planet.
A small step on the red planet will be a big step for human beings. Humans have launched 46 Mars exploration missions (任务,使命)since October 1960, but only 19 of them have been successful. It's China's first spacecraft to Mars, and the missions are rather challenging.Tianwen 1 aims to achieve “orbiting, landing, and roving(环绕,着陆,巡视)”all in one journey, which will make the country the world’s first to achieve all three goals with one probe, mission scientists said. Among the three tasks, touchdown on the red planet is the most difficult. The result mainly depends on the “breathtaking seven minutes,” which will require some cutting-edge technologies and accurate(准确的) timing of each action, including the burning of engines and opening of parachutes(降落伞)to ensure(确保) a safe landing, according to the Global Times. The success of Chang’e 5 has increased experience in this regard which "boosts our confidence”,Wang Yanan,
7
chief editor of Beijing-based Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told the Global Times.Tianwen 1’s final goal is to land a rover on Mars in May or June, and it will conduct scientific investigations on Mars’s soil, geological(地质学的)structure, environment, atmosphere and water.
8. What is special about Tianwen 1?
8. Its missions are quite difficult.
8. It uses the latest technology.
8. It aims to achieve orbiting, landing and roving with one probe.
8. It is more successful than Chang’e 5.
9. What is the biggest challenge to Tianwen 1?
9. Landing a rover on Mars.
9. Opening the parachutes in time.
9. Entering Mars orbit.
9. Landing on Mars successfully
10. What does Chang’e 5’s success mean to Tianwen 1?
10. Chang’e 5 can help complete part of Tianwen’s missions.
10. Chang’e 5’s success has increased landing experience.
10. Chang’e 5 can help Tianwen 1 land on Mars successfully

Space tourism (太空旅游业) is no longer a thing of science fiction. There are lots of companies planning to send people into space in the next few years. Space X is one of the most famous companies offering trips to space. And in April, 2022, it sent 4 people into space. Now, what can space tourists do while in space? Here are some examples:
See the Earth from space
Seeing the Earth from a distance has always been a dream. It gives most people a sense of both pride and wonder (which is also why people climb the highest mountain and dive in the deepest sea on the Earth).
Stay in a space hotel
Hotels are directly connected with tourism, right? So if there's space tourism, there might also be space hotels up soon. Orion Span has been planning to send tourists to stay in their“space hotel”, which would hold up to 6 people at a time.
Eat in space
Eating is not easy in space. Even drinking water is difficult. Oh, a quick fact! You aren't allowed to burp(打嗝)in space! Bubbles will come out of your mouth and it might be dangerous
8
to leave them around.
Visit the Moon and other planets
Space tourism companies are racing to launch (发射) the first tourist flight to the Moon. Although there might be a long way to go before common people can step on the Moon,we will probably see it in our life time. And maybe we'll even see hotels on the Moon.
With the industry rapidly developing, space tourism is around the corner, and it might come much faster than we think. Who knows what the future might be like? Will you be the next person to travel to space?
1.__________ to do when travelling in space
Introduction
Travelling in space is not a 2.__________ any longer.
Some companies are 3.__________ people with space trips.
People may feel 4.__________ when seeing the Earth from space.
Space hotels have a direct 5.__________ with space tourism.
