My mind still holds the image of the day I first walked into the untouched valley. The air was filled with the gentle whispers of the ancient trees, and the river’s song was more ancient than any human words. As my boots sank into the moss (苔藓), I felt the forest breathing beneath me — a living, pulsing lives that had been there long before my birth and would continue to do so long after my bones turned to dust.
Modern civilization teaches us to conquer (征服) nature. We dam rivers, clear-cut forests, and force the land to bend to our will. Yet in this hidden valley, I understood the arrogance (傲慢) of this attitude. The towering trees stood as patient witnesses to countless human sillies; the rocks held secrets of centuries in their silent embrace (怀抱).
Scientists warn we’ve entered modern civilization — a time defined by human rule. But here, nature still ruled everything. When fog rolled in, all technology became useless. When winter came, even the most advanced equipment couldn’t match the adaptations of the snowshoe hare (雪鞋兔) or the evergreen’s waxy needles (蜡质针叶).
As I left the valley, a single raven (乌鸦) followed me to the tree line. Its knowing eyes seemed to ask: “When your concrete jungles collapse, who will remain — your kind or mine?” The question confuses me still, in the glow of my office, where the wild exists only as screensavers and corporate logos. True wilderness isn’t just a place — it’s the mirror that shows us our place in the grand scheme of life.
16. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Nature never gives way to the human. B. Scientists should study primary forests.
C. Nature takes delight in conquering humans. D. Humans should keep on fighting for needs.
17. What does the underlined sentence mean in the third paragraph?
A. Fog affects the survival of wildlife. B. Nature still takes over in some aspects.
C. The author dislikes using modern devices. D. Human technology fails in extreme weather conditions.
18. What does the “knowing eyes” symbolize (象征) in the fourth paragraph?
A. The great curiosity about humans. B. The mysterious power of animals.
C. The great authority over wilderness. D. The wisdom and permanence of nature.
19. What can we learn from the passage?
A. City life is more meaningful than wilderness.
B. Modern technology enables humans to conquer nature.
C. The scientists’ warnings about the civilization are incorrect.
D. We should rethink the relationship with nature and keep modest.

From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — somehow manage to avoid the disaster of stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are now studying these insects’ cooperative methods to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.
The free flow of traffic becomes unstable as the density (密集度) of cars increases on a highway. At 15 vehicles per mile per lane, one driver tapping their brakes can cause a constant wave of jam.
Katsuhiro Nishinari studies jamming transitions. His previous research had shown that foraging (觅食) ants can maintain their flow even at high densities. So what’s their secret? In a recent study published in Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives, researchers recorded Ochetellus ants on foraging trails and used traffic-engineering models to analyze their movement. They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour hardly tend to follow such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests of individuals, which is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno, who studies sustainable (可持续的) engineering at the University of Trento in Italy. But self-driving cars, if they one day become ubiquitous, could have more cooperative programming. In one vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would share information with nearby cars to optimize (优化) traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing (优先考虑) constant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the road.
This vehicle network would be similar to ants on a trail, which use smell to cooperate while interacting with one another. “There is no leader,” but this organization appears anyway, says Noa Pinter Wollman, a behavioral scientist currently studying ants at the University of California, Los Angeles. And in both ant and vehicle traffic, this type of distributed system can be “very, very strong”, Nishinari says.
Still, ants can do a lot of things that cars — even self-driving ones — can’ t, Pinter Wollman points out. Ants can make trails as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when stuck in tunnels, but to keep things moving, “they’ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,” she says. Plus, unlike cars, ants don’t crash; they can actually walk over one another.
Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam, Nishinari says: don’t tailgate (追尾). By leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense (密集的) traffic conditions. “Just keeping away,” he says, can help traffic flow smoothly.
20. According to the research, how do ants avoid traffic jam when foraging?
A. They brake to adjust on a regular basis.
B. They rely entirely on leaders to command.
C They tend to speed up to overtake other ants.
D. They maintain a steady speed and distance in groups.
21. Which of the following is probably the meaning of “ubiquitous” in the fourth paragraph?
A. Expensive. B. Rare. C. Popular. D. Dangerous.
22. What do ants and future self-driving cars have in common?
A. They can both widen roads at will.
B. They both cause traffic jam due to braking.
C. They both rely on centralized command systems.
D. They can both optimize traffic flow through cooperation.
23. What practical advice does Nishinari give to human drivers to prevent traffic jams?
A. Driving as fast as possible to avoid slowing down.
B. Overtaking the car in front to maintain a tight formation.
C. Leaving enough space between cars to absorb braking waves.
D Ignoring other drivers and focus solely on personal route planning.
D
“Look for the gap” “Move into space” Sound familiar? From the sidelines to the field, no matter the team sport, looking for relevant information in the playing environment can be as important as any other skill if you want to score. Think Allen Iverson, Scott Pendlebury, or Natalie Medhurst, coolly judging all the options before making important decisions. How do these excellent athletes become so great? As well as their physical strengths, their brainpower is an obvious advantage.
Regardless of whether an athlete is playing backyard cricket or Olympic basketball, their playing environment holds important information that must be found, explained and then acted on. Research conducted at Western Sydney University finds skilled players are better at looking for and seeing the options and what’s happening around them in the playing environment. They tend to look both at an opponent (对手) and at where they can move next. Less skilled players, however, might watch only one detail but not what is happening around them.
Skilled players are also often faster to make decisions compared to less skilled players; their experiences create more stored memories that help speed up their decision-making. Essentially, skilled players know what information is the most relevant to focus on and they act on it quickly.
Adding to this picture is new research that explores the negative impact of mental fatigue (疲劳) on physical performance. This work shows that our ability to exercise can be affected negatively after activities requiring long periods of thinking and mental effort, particularly when these activities are boring. It first considers the impact of using the brain so much that it makes you physically tired. This may be particularly relevant for coaches of young players shifting from the school day to training, especially if the day’s lessons have been complex. Coaches should therefore map out appropriate strategies by considering the amount of information they provide for athletes and the complexity of the tasks and instructions.
Overall, cognitive (认知的) skills, like physical qualities, are key to high performance and even play a role in identifying future potential. Cognition could be a reliable marker of ability over time and could provide some basis for prediction of talent.
24. Why are some great athletes mentioned in the text?
A. To compare different sports. B. To highlight physical training.
C. To stress mental skills in sports. D. To honor their achievements in sports.
25. According to paragraph 2, what advantage do skilled athletes tend to have?
A. Faster moving speed. B. Wider focus of attention.
C. More efficient teamwork. D. Stronger physical endurance.
26. What does the author suggest coaches do after their players have had a hard school day?
A. Lengthen the warm-up for training.
B. Set the training intensity adaptively.
C. Prioritize physical over cognitive training.
D. Refer to their players’ previous performance.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. The quality of sports talent. B. The overall training in sports.
C. The cognitive power in sports. D. The variables affecting sports.

How to spot AI images on social media?
With the rise of AI-generated content, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for common people and professionals to distinguish between real photographs and artificial images. ____28____ However, there are still some common signs to look for when trying to spot an AI-generated image.
Focus on the details
____29____ However, AI models often struggle with recreating fine details correctly, especially in areas that are more complex or less commonly seen. A good example is the image of actor Ryan Reynolds. At first glance, the image seems believable, but closer inspection reveals that the fingers on his right hand are oddly shaped, a common mistake in AI images. In addition, if you look at the writing on his F1 jacket, it turns out to be nonsense, without readable content. This is another red flag. ____30____
Be aware of perfection
AI-generated images often appear too perfect. The faces in these images can look unusually smooth or “airbrushed,” lacking the small imperfections that make real human faces look natural. ____31____ However, upon closer examination, the facial features may lack skin texture (质感) or depth, giving the photo an unreal quality. Another clue is the background setting. AI often places subjects in overly ideal or fantasy-like environments. If a seemingly realistic photo includes an odd detail, like a flock of swans in an unlikely place, it could suggest that the image is computer-generated.
Reverse (反向) image search
When visual clues aren’t enough, reverse image searching can help. By uploading the image to a search engine, you can see where else it appears online. Real photos tend to exist across multiple sources. AI-generated images, on the other hand, usually have limited web presence. ____32____ This may tag the image with terms like “AI-generated,” giving you a clear answer.
While AI-generated images are improving, they still leave behind subtle traces. Learning to spot these clues helps us stay alert and more informed in an era where seeing is no longer always believing.
A. Additionally, reverse searches may link to the original uploader.
B. Images generated by machines can now look incredibly realistic.
C. Even experts in computer imaging have a hard time getting used to it.
D. Consequently, we can see AI fails to carry out human will appropriately.
E. AI images are created by processing large quantities of data from photos.
F. So, AI struggles to represent detailed contents, which easily gives it away.
G. For instance, an AI image of pop star Ariana Grande may initially appear lifelike.

【答案】16. A 17. B 18. D 19. D

C. They tend to speed up to overtake other ants.
D. Ignoring other drivers and focus solely on personal route planning.
【答案】20. D 21. C 22. D 23. C

【20题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
根据画线词句中“…could have more cooperative programming (……可以有更多的合作编程)”可知,自动驾驶汽车要想有更多的合作编程,前提是有更多的人接受自动驾驶汽车,由此可知,只有自动驾驶汽车变得十分普遍,才能有更多的合作编程,“Popular”意为“普遍的”,能够表达画线单词在句中所要表达的意思。故选C项。
【22题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段关键句“In one vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would share information with nearby cars to optimize (优化) traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing (优先考虑) constant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the road. (在这个未来的一个愿景中,自动驾驶汽车将与附近的汽车共享信息,以优化交通流——研究人员建议,也许可以通过优先考虑恒定的速度和车头时距,或者不在路上超车。)”和第五段关键句“This vehicle network would be similar to ants on a trail, which use smell to cooperate while interacting with one another. (这种车辆网络类似于小径上的蚂蚁,它们在相互互动的同时利用气味进行合作。)”可知,未来的自动驾驶汽车可以通过合作优化交通流,这类似于小径上的蚂蚁,由此可知,蚂蚁和未来的自动驾驶汽车的共同点是他们可以通过合作优化交通流。故选D项。
【23题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam, Nishinari says: don’t tailgate (追尾). By leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense (密集的) traffic conditions.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. B 27. C

【答案】28. B 29. E 30. F 31. G 32. A
