Passage 1
It is not easy to set and reach goals. The following practical tips on goal setting can help you.
1 "I'm going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines" is a much more doable goal than "I'm going to do more for the environment". And that makes it easier to stick with.
2 It will probably take a couple of months before any changes—like getting up half an hour early to exercise—become a routine part of your life. That's because your brain needs time to get used to the idea that this new thing you're doing is part of your regular routine.
Repeating a goal makes it stick. 3 (Writing it down works too.) Every time you remind yourself of your goal, you're training your brain to make it happen.
Pleasing other people doesn't work. 4 Make sure you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else wants you to. It will be harder to stay on track and motivated if you're doing something out of obligation to another person.
Roadblocks don't mean failure. Slip-ups are actually part of the learning process as you retrain your brain into a new way of thinking. It may take a few tries to reach a goal. But that's ok — it's normal to mess up or give up a few times when trying to make a change. 5
A.Specific, realistic goals work best.
B.It takes time for a change to become an established habit.
C.The key to making any change is to find the desire within you.
D.So remember that everyone slips up and don't beat yourself up about it and remind yourself to get back on track.
E.Say your goal out loud each morning to remind yourself of what you want and what you're working for.
Passage 2
Nowadays, students’ safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of students say they are worried about robbery on the way to and from school. Now in main big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson, self-protection. 1 And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.
Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No. 25 Middle School, gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed
Keep calm. You don’t have to fight against. 2 Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.
If you are in a traffic accident
If a car hits you, you should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before you let the rider go. 3 This is because you don’t know how seriously you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightning
Don’t stay in high places and stay away from trees.
If there is a fire
Get away as fast as you can. 4 Do not take the lift.
If someone is drowning
If you can’t swim, don’t get into the water, cry out for help.
5 Remember that danger is never so far away as you think. Take care of yourself at all times and enjoy your school life!
A.If you cannot cry for help or run away, give the robber your money.
B.All in all, safety comes first.
C.Don’t move yourself even you don’t feel hurt.
D.Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes.
E.Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit.
Passage 3
You have lots of things you'd like to do. But sometimes it's hard to get to the finish line-just like your goal. How can you break your bad habits and develop good ones? 1 Here are a few opinions we often get from kids, followed by ideas that might help.
● I can't get away from screens.
2 If you usually spend time lying on the sofa and watching TV programs or a video when you're bored, go somewhere else instead. Take a book to your room or your violin to the backyard. Or ask if you can help cook in the kitchen.
● 3
Start with "showing up. " Then take one small step or do one tiny task, followed by another and another. For example, how do I practice the piano? First sit at it. Then play one note at a time.
Starting with a super-simple step often helps. Why? It's easy, quick, and gets you in action. 4
● I have no time.
Take a look at the choices you make about how you spend time. Do those choices show what's important to you? Can you spare 10 minutes a day to work on a goal? Let's suppose you want to be singer. 5 Talk with a parent about why your goal counts. Discuss whether you can let go of something less important to free up time to achieve it.
A.Then keep taking steps.
B.I can't start such a huge goal.
C.And how can you try to reach your goals?
D.To change a habit, try changing where you spend your time.
E.Is it more important to practice singing than play video games?
Passage 4
Family is a word that has special meaning to everyone. A happy family is what everyone is thirsty for. But because of different personalities, values, likes and dislikes, some unhappy things happen among family members once in a while. 1

2 Each country has many good people who help to take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals or orphanages (孤儿院) for the children. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
3 Some young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses or do some shopping.

If you receive a detention, you’ll find yourself sitting in a room with your teacher during break, lunch or even worse 2 Depending on how naughty you’ve been, you can get two detentions in one day! If you get an IEU, you’re isolated (隔离) from other students. 3
Supervision (监管) means that you cannot take part in PE lessons. 4 In this way, all the teachers can always see you. It can make you really uncomfortable and without freedom.
Suspension means you cannot go to school for some time. The most serious punishment you can ever receive is exclusion. 5 You’ll have to find another school to go to and it will be on your school record. Few things are as wonderful as visiting a beautiful natural place, breathing the fresh air and enjoying the beauty. 1 People can love a place to death if they aren’t careful. In 1990, the Leave No Trace movement attempted to help. They introduced the following principles to encourage people to both enjoy and protect the great outdoors.
Plan ahead. 2 Check the weather forecast, plan what clothing to wear, and think about a water supply. Also, check the area’s rules for use.
Throw away waste properly. Never leave garbage behind. Don’t leave your food wrappers, cans or leftovers. 3
Respect wildlife. You should stay at least 100meters away from wildlife, so you don’t disturb any animals. 4 Protect your food so that animals can’t get into it, and don’t feed the animals on anything. Human food isn’t good for them, and becoming comfortable with humans is dangerous for them. They may forget how to survive in the wild or become less afraid of humans.
5 Don’t make loud noises or play loud music when you’re out in natural environments. It annoys both the animals and humans. Don’t travel in large groups as it makes it troublesome for other travelers to move around on the paths.
The principles above can help everyone share the outdoors comfortably. We all need to take care of the earth we know and love.

Judge interest
The next step of starting a club is judging interest of others. It is important to talk to friends and other students at school, because they will be the ones who finally will choose to join or stay away from your club. If they have no interest, you have no club. 3
Think about details
4 It probably wouldn’t be that smart to rush into a club without having thought about what you wish to achieve, how you are going to do so, the meeting times and locations and finally what you need to do to start your club.
Make it official
Then you can head to the teacher’s office and tell this teacher what your club is about, along with all details. Once he or she agrees, you will likely have to fill out some paperwork to make the club official. 5 Starting a club can be very rewarding and benefit you in ways you could not have imagined. Playing sports enables you to create friendships you otherwise might not have formed. 2 You play together happily and gradually know each other. Many times, the friendships you create on the field remain strong when you are not playing sports.

This will without doubt help them in their future lives and jobs as well.
5

A 2. B 3. E 4. C 5. D
1. 根据下文“"I'm going to recycle all my plastic bottles, soda cans, and magazines" is a much more doable goal than "I'm going to do more for the environment".”
2. 根据下句话“It will probably take a couple of months before any changes”做出改变可能需要几个月的时间。
3. 根据上下文语境“Repeating a goal makes it stick…….(Writing it down works too.)”
4. 根据语境“Pleasing other people doesn't work…. Make sure you have to do it because you want it, not because a girlfriend, boyfriend, coach, parent, or someone else wants you to.”
5. 根据这一段的主题“Roadblocks don't mean failure.”“路障并不意味着失败”以及上句话“it's normal to mess up or give up a few times when trying to make a change.”

Passage 5
Smoke alarms(报警器)
House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unfortunately set by children. 1 Kids must understand that they’d better not play with fire. You should keep matches and lighters out of their reach.
2 The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you're asleep. You should have a smoke alarm outside each bedroom and on each floor of your home. You ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practise these plans in the dark with your family.
A smoke alarm warns you of the danger. 3 Take action immediately. When you come to a closed door, check it with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, there may be smoke or fire behind the door, so take care. Once you are out of your house, call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn’t go back in. Firemen know how to perform rescues safely.
4 Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts about ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working.
About two out of three fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke alarms. 5
A.Most of these deaths can be avoided
B.But when you hear it, you don t have much time
C.A smoke alarm is only good if it's working properly
D.So, it's important to teach them that fire is a tool, not a toy
E.A smoke alarm greatly reduces your chances of being hurt in a fire
D 2. E 3. B 4. C 5. A
House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unfortunately set by children. Kids must understand that they’d better not play with fire提到“孩子们最好不要玩火”,前后为因果关系,因此这里应起到承接上文,并引出文章主题的作用,故应选D,意为“因此教给他们火是工具,而不是玩具是很重要的”。
2. 下句话The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you're asleep提到了烟雾报警器的作用,这个空位于该段的第一句话,应该是对整段内容的概括,故应选E,意为“烟雾报警器大大降低了你在火灾中受伤的可能性”。
A smoke alarm warns you of the danger.
Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working.
5. 空格前About two out of three fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke alarms提到,大约有三分之二的火灾死亡事件都是由于没有烟雾报警器,A选项中的these deaths呼应了上句话的内容,故应选A,意为“大多数死亡案例是可以避免的”。
A smoke alarm warns you of the danger.
Passage 6
1 Taking part in charily (慈善) is not just for grown-up people. Children can do it, too! Melvin Sheppard, 14, an American student, has done charity work for eight years. He has also encouraged his classmates to join him.
4 For boys who no longer have fathers, there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
5 Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities. Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to mountains, beaches, museums or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls.

B.Volunteers in clubs.
C.Big Brothers.
D.A student who teacher his classmates how to give.
E.Volunteers work in the homes of people who are sick or old.
D 2. A 3. E 4. C 5. B
1. 根据Melvin Sheppard, 14, an American student, has done charity work for eight years. He has also encouraged his classmates to join him.,可知短文讲述的是美国学生梅尔文引导同学做慈善的故事。 A student who teacher his classmates how to give符合段意,故选D。

5. 根据Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities.,可知Volunteers in clubs符合句意,故选B。
Passage 1
It’s easy to tell someone good news, but what about bad news? Are there any good ways to give bad news without making people too upset? The following ways might help.
1
Try to start the conversation with something good so that what you say is not all bad. For example, “I know you play soccer very well, but we only need one teammate.” Or you may end the conversation with a promise. “I’m sure you will join us in the next game.”
2
Use words to introduce what you’re going to say, like “I’m really sorry, but …” or “I’m afraid I’ve got some bad news.” This gives the listener time to prepare for what you will say.
3
People like to know why things go wrong. Try to explain the decision: if you have to cancel (取消) a trip with friends, can you explain why?
4
If you’re giving someone bad news, try to use a soft friendly voice to make you sound kind. Say things to show you understand, like “I’m really sorry. I know this must be disappointing.”
5

Can we live without salt? Of course not. Salt is very important to people. We need it in our food. Animals need it, too. However, how much do you know about salt?
1
In the past, salt was as valuable (宝贵的) as gold. This means that areas producing salt had a valuable trade, where people could use salt to exchange for gold. In Medieval West Africa, salt led to the development of trade and brought great wealth to the cities and states in which it passed through.
2
Over the years, people discovered different ways to get salt. Some early people got salt from rocks. In other places, people got salt from the sea. They got seawater and put it in the sun. After a long time, the water dried up. Then people could get salt.
3
Salt can be found across the world, but there is no one specific way to get it. Today we depend on 3 main methods to get salt: from the seawater, salt mines (矿) and salt wells.
4
To get salt from salt wells, people put two pipes (管子) into the ground. Water is sent down through one of the pipes. And the water is mixed with the salt in salt wells. It makes salt water. Then the salt water is pushed up through the other pipe. Later, the salt is taken out of the salt water.
5

Passage 3
You’ve probably heard of books that will change your life. And a lot of readers agree that the book Atomic Habits (《原子习惯》) will meet your needs.
James Clear, who did a lot of research on formation (形成) of habits, is the writer of Atomic Habits.
1 It has sold over 15 million copies and has been translated into more than 50 languages. And his website receives millions of visitors each month. 2 That’s because the book introduces a practical system for creating good habits and breaking bad ones. Readers everywhere are very interested in Clear’s “science of tiny habits”.
In the book, the writer suggests trying to get 1% better each day. For example, you’d like to exercise but you don’t think you have the time or energy. Clear suggests starting with two minutes a day. Over time, the effects of this habit will increase as you repeat the actions. 3 “All big things come from small beginnings,” says Clear.
Clear continues with the following advice: Don’t focus on (聚焦) what you want to achieve. 4 For example, two men want to break the habit of smoking. When offered a cigarette (香烟), one says, “No, thanks. I’m trying to give up smoking.” The other says, “No, thanks. I’m not a smoker.” While the first man still sees himself as a smoker, the second man doesn’t. Clear says, “Bad habits will die more easily if you focus on who you want to become.”
Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success. 5 Slowly but surely, it will have a great effect on your health, job and relationships.
A.Why is it so popular?

Passage 5
A good memory is often seen as something that comes naturally, while a bad memory as something that cannot be changed. In fact, there is a lot that you can do to improve your memory. 1
2
We all remember the things we are interested in, and always forget the ones that bore us. This explains the reason why schoolboys remember football results easily but are bored with their history lessons! Develop an active interest in what you want to remember. One way to make yourself more interested is to ask questions—the more, the better.
Repeat things in chunks (块).
Repeating things in chunks is the best way to remember things for a short time, for example, remembering a phone number for a few seconds. 3 The following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at them in “groups” or “chunks” repeatedly, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.
Invent a story.
To remember long lists, try inventing a story which includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this way. When they were tested later, they could remember about 90% of them. 4
Take physical exercise.
Physical exercise is important for your memory because it increases your heart rate (心率) and sends more oxygen (氧气) to your brain, and that makes your memory work better. 5 As we know, too much pressure is very bad for the memory.
A.Take an interest.

Every school has some rules for students to follow. But what happens when students break the rules? In the UK, when students don’t behave well at school, they will be given a warning. But if they go on behaving badly—like talking over the teacher—they’ll be punished. 1 Generally speaking, there are five punishments in UK schools: detention (课后留校), isolation (隔离) (IEU), supervision (监管), suspension (停学) and exclusion (开除).
Obviously, there is no total freedom in the world, no matter in the US or in China. Punishments may be a good way to discipline students somehow. If you don’t want to get punished

Smoke alarms(报警器)
House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unfortunately set by children. 1 . Kids must understand that they’d better not play with fire. You should keep matches and lighters out of their reach.
2 . The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you’re asleep. You should have a smoke alarm outside each bedroom and on each floor of your home. You ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practise these plans in the dark with your family.
A smoke alarm warns you of the danger. 3 .Take action immediately. When you come to a closed door, check it with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, there may be smoke or fire behind the door, so take care. Once you are out of your house, call the fire department from a neighbor’s house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn’t go back in. Firemen know how to perform rescues safely.
4 . Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts about ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working.

Passage 3

Passage 4
If you have a hobby or idea that currently does not fit into an existing club in your school, starting one may be a great idea. 1 Here are some ways to help you start a club.
Think
The first step of starting anything is to think. 2 It allows you to see all of your possible ideas for the club. This leads us to the next step: sharing the results of your brainstorming with people.
Be patient and stick with it once you start.
A.In this case, brainstorming will be very helpful.
B.Then you may want to reconsider your idea for the club.
