As I wandered out of my New York apartment, behind me someone called out, “Where can I find peaches?” I turned around to see a woman standing outside the greengrocer’s. The absurdity of the moment struck me — why would someone want peaches in the middle of winter? It is just as absurd as sitting by the pool on a blistering summer day and reaching for a warm, woolly jumper.
I was already aware of the issues facing the food system: industrial farming ruining soils, unclear supply chains leaving citizens powerless in making the right buying decisions, and the dominance of ultra-processed foods with zero nutritional value in supermarkets. But this encounter made me see how normalized it was to expect food out of season.
After graduating, I worked at Wall Street in New York, managing portfollos (投资组合). Despite the breathtaking view and fast-paced stock market, I was troubled by the greed underlying my work. Cooking was my escape. It had always been a passion, whether in Buenos Aires, at university, or in New York.
As I neared my 30s, I knew I needed a change and food became my north star. Through my work visiting markets and farmers around Europe, I saw first-hand why seasonality is critical in our ability to regain control of, and fix, our food system. All around me I could see how quickly flavour was disappearing from our plates. I wanted to reintroduce phenomenal flavour into people’s lives, and to re-educate and reconnect consumers with nature. In 2004, I took over Natoora, a French-founded company with a small base in London, determined to reintroduce great flavor to people’s lives and reconnect them with nature.
My two-decade-long devotion to flavor, initially a pursuit of personal pleasure, has given my work a deep sense of purpose. Flavor can emotionally connect us to food and bring joy back into our relationship with it. Changing careers opened a new world for me, filled with purpose and love for my work, and I hope it inspires others to fight for a better food-centric world.

27. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?

D. From Wall Street to the World of Flavor

Scientists have revealed much of the basics about earthquakes: tectonic plates (构造板块) move, causing strain energy (应变能) to build up, and that energy eventually releases in the form of an earthquake. However, forecasting earthquakes remains a significant challenge, which was evidenced by the 2011 great Tohoku earthquake. In addition to causing a tsunami that led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster, it resulted in more than18,000 deaths.
In recent years, researchers have been trying to figure out a possible relation between the sun and earthquakes. Based on a previous study that connected solar activity with earthquakes, a study conducted by researchers from the University of Tsukuba (UT) cast light on this possibility, confirming that sunspot numbers had some influence on earthquakes and Earth’s climate, as affected by solar heat, played a role.
“Solar heat drives atmospheric temperature changes, which in turn can affect things like rock properties and underground water movement,” said Junqueira Saldanha, leader of the research team. “Such changes can make rocks tend to break apart. For example, the changes in rainfall and snowmelt can affect the pressure on tectonic plate boundaries. While these factors may not be the main drivers of earthquakes, they could still be playing a role that can help to predict earthquakes.” Among other findings, the researchers used mathematical and computational methods to analyze earthquake data alongside solar activity records and surface temperatures on Earth. They observed that when they included Earth surface temperatures into their model, the forecasting became more accurate, especially for shallow earthquakes. “That makes sense, since heat and water mostly affect the upper layers of the Earth’s crust (地壳),” said Saldanha.
The findings suggest the transfer of solar heat to the surface of the Earth does affect earthquakes, however minutely, and that incorporating solar activity predictions into detailed Earth temperature models may help issue earthquake forecasts. “It’s an exciting direction, and we hope our study can decipher the bigger picture of what causes earthquakes,” said Saldanha.
28. Why did the author mention Tohoku earthquake in Paragraph 1?
A. To demonstrate the movement of tectonic plates.
B. To illustrate the difficulty in earthquake forecast.
C. To reveal the heavy losses caused by earthquakes.
D. To emphasize the need to reduce strain energy.
29. What does the study by UT mainly focus on?
A. The climate change caused by earthquakes.
B. The impact of solar activity on atmosphere.
C. The reasons for increased sunspot numbers.
D. The link between sunspots and earthquakes.
30. Which of the following would Saldanha agree?
A. Solar heat decides earthquake frequency.
B. Tectonic plate pressure grows constantly.
C. Earthquakes occur in the crust’s upper layer.
D. Solar activity data helps predict earthquakes.
31. What does the underlined word “decipher” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Reveal. B. Distinguish. C. Expand. D. Assess.
D
Most artwork displayed in a typical art gallery includes beautiful landscapes and people as we’re drawn to beautiful things. Artwork that does not fit typical beauty standards is reserved for terrible themes, existing only to remind us of the terrible parts of life that we prefer not to think about.
The University’s Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) exhibition “Beyond Beauty”, an exhibition showcasing artwork that does not fit the “perfect” beauty standards of other art. Preconceived (先入为主的) views of art and beauty are what “Beyond Beauty” seeks to change by surrounding visitors with uncomfortable descriptions of the human condition. Each piece describes humans as less-than-perfect in the traditional sense, with the collection including the “ugly side” of society like interpretations of death and social ills, and has an enormous power, producing strong emotional responses.
Some artists are found not to steer clear of the depressing themes modern society and museums rarely choose. One striking work displayed in the exhibition is “Constellated in Brief and Darkly” by printmaker Rosemarie Bernardi, which shows deep insight into the realities of medical practice and stimulates conversation around the complex and painful theme of congenital (先天性的) abnormality.
The development of “Beyond Beauty” started with the installation of a clown (小丑) painting. Visitors were forced to consider a colorful, unconventional painting alongside old master artworks. The MAG received comments from visitors who suggested keeping the terrible art away from their beloved traditional landscapes. Others found the painting to be engaging, which improved their museum experience.
Now, Condo’s “The Clown” sits at the front of the exhibition, welcoming visitors in. After this visit, they may consider “ugliness” not as something to be rejected, but something that is to be welcomed. As today’s society sets impossible beauty standards, it’s as important as ever to remember beauty does not, exist in just one form, and public views of “ugly” do not tell the whole story. Without the inclusion of the “ugly” side, we lose the descriptions that define entire groups of people and time periods.
32. What is the feature of artworks in the exhibition?
A. They are completed imperfectly. B. They show negative aspects of humanity.
C. They fit preconceived views of art. D. They focus on the unnoticeable social ills.
33. What does the underlined phrase “steer clear of” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Appreciate. B. Understand. C. Avoid. D. Criticize.
34. What can be known about the clown painting?
A. It is from an old master. B. It receives mixed reviews.
C. It sets a new standard for art. D. It is about society’s problems.
35. What does the author say about ugliness?
A. It takes several different forms.
B. Welcoming it is simple for the public.
C. It is more common than beauty.
D. The general opinion on it is one-sided.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下列短文,从短文中的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The power of no: how to build strong, healthy boundaries
No. A tiny, yet mighty word. To hear it can make us feel childlike; sheepish or in trouble.
36 In July, when the gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from most of her Olympics appearances, citing emotional exhaustion that was affecting her ability to perform, her “no” was absolutely unexpected. 37 White, male sports experts used the word “selfish”. It was a similar story when the tennis player Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open in May, speaking of “long bouts (发作) of depression” and “huge waves of anxiety” before her pre- and post-match press conferences.
For both women, after a lifetime of intensive training, in the world’s gaze, the risks of saying no were huge. 38 A superstar athlete such as Biles pulling away from the most honored sporting event in the world to prioritize her state of mind felt culturally influential, yet remarkably simple. 39
40 According to Steve Magness, an Olympic athletics coach and performance scientist, “You spend years building towards a moment and have external pressure coming at you which transforms into unbelievable international pressure. I don’t think the everyday person understands that.” Magness has spent a decade researching toughness, namely, our “deep misunderstanding” of what it really means. “The easy decision was to push onwards no matter what. You can always defend ‘trying’. The hard decision was to say no.”
A. Reactions were largely supportive, but opinions were divided along political lines in the US.
B. The Olympic games are emotionally exhausting.
C. For good mental health, focusing on our own toughness is crucial.
D. How does it make you feel to say “no”? Strong? Nervous? Guilty?
E. When we find it difficult to say ‘no’ at work or at home, our responsibilities can quickly become overwhelming.
F. But the message was that they were removing themselves from systems that might not protect them.
G. Why shouldn’t she put others’ expectations second if feeling completely overwhelmed?
