①On April Fool’s Day in many English-speaking countries, people play jokes on others. Newspapermen are usually serious, but sometimes they play jokes, too. There are many great examples of funny April Fool’s Day jokes from the newspapers and TV.
②For example, in 2008, BBC News reported that penguins (企鹅) could fly. It said their cameraman had seen this happen while filming at the South Pole. He said that luckily, he had filmed the event, and they showed some videos of penguins taking off and flying through the air. Of course, the BBC later told the truth. They had made up the whole story and used special effects (效果) to make the film.
③In 1981, the Daily Mail had a story about a Japanese runner in the London marathon (马拉松). The man was still running days after the race had finished. The story explained that the runner had misunderstood the rules of the race. Instead of running for 26 miles, he believed he needed to run for 26 days. The paper said that he was lost somewhere in the middle of the British countryside.
④And there’s certainly nothing new about these types of stories. Back in 1878, the Daily Graphic newspaper in the USA had a story about the famous scientist Thomas Edison. It told its readers that Edison had invented a food machine that would feed the humans. It didn’t explain how the machine worked, just that it would make any kind of food using air, water and earth. Many people believed the story and Edison got letters from people all over the country.

A.how the newspapers and TV play jokes on April Fool’s Day
B.What did the BBC cameraman make by using special effects
C.Why did the Japanese runner get lost in the middle of countryside

3.How does the writer support (支持) the main idea of the text?
A.By giving reasons. B.By comparing opinions.
C.By showing examples. D.By using numbers.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Dragon Head-raising Day (龙抬头日) is celebrated on the second day of the second Chinese lunar (农历) month to show respect to Dragon King and wish good weather for a big harvest (收获).
It is considered the start of spring and farming. After the cold winter, spring comes and animals are awake, but because of the winter, the weather is dry and farming needs water. The story goes that after this day, the Dragon King who controls clouds and rains would wake from his winter sleep and bring rainfall (降雨) for the crops (庄稼).
On that day, there are lots of traditional celebration activities. First, in the early morning when it’s still dark, families go to a river or a well with lanterns to get water and then carry it back home. Then they light candles, burn incense sticks (香柱) and offer a sacrifice (祭品). This ritual is named Yintianlong (lead the field dragon). People believe the actions can bring wealth and health to their homes.
The most well-known tradition on the day is having a haircut (理发). It’s a sign of good luck and energy in the whole year. However, it is very bad luck to get a haircut during the first lunar month.
Eating “dragon” food is another important part of celebrations. Chinese are best at connecting certain food with luck so food eaten on this day also gets special names. Noodles which are long and thin are called “dragon beard (long xu).” Dumplings are called “dragon ears (long er).” Spring rolls are “dragon scales (long lin)”, and people call popcorn “dragon seeds (long zi)”.

3.How does the writer support (支持) the main idea of the text?
A.By giving reasons. B.By comparing opinions.
C.By showing examples. D.By using numbers.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
Do you know the International Day of Older Persons? It is on October 1st from 1991 and it’s a day to celebrate and show love and care to old people every year.
The United Nations realized that many elderly people were facing difficulties, like being ill or feeling lonely. Having a special day helps us understand their problems and asks us to help and care for them.

If you live far from your grandparents, you can give them a call. They miss you a lot, so they must be happy about talking with you. On March 14, math and science around the world celebrated a special day: Pi Day. Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on endlessly. It is sometimes written in Greek, π. With the help of computers, mathematicians have been able to calculate pi out to over a trillion decimal (小数) places, but there is still no end to the number. This makes pi puzzling, even for the most famous scientists and mathematicians. Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, since how we write this date, 3/14, looks just like the number pi.
For some people, the appeal (吸引力) of Pi Day goes far beyond math and science. Pi shows up throughout popular culture. You can see it in movies, comics, music and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to evoke (唤起) a sense of mystery, often the symbol pi is used,” said David Blatner, a Jewish-American writer of The Joy of Pi.

Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number. People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pies and with fun pi-related games and activities. In 2016, Princeton, New Jersey, held a birthday party for Albert Einstein whose birthday also falls on March 14. There was also a “Walk a Pi Event” where people walked 3.14 miles together.
