In China, the Dragon Boat Festival is not just about eating zongzi ( rice dumplings) or remembering the poet Qu Yuan. It also teaches a deep lesson about team spirit through dragon boat racing, a tradition that has lasted for over 2,000 years.
A dragon boat team has 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer. Every member must work perfectly together. The drummer beats the drum to set the rhythm, the paddlers follow the beats to row at the same speed and the steerer guides the boat’s direction. If even one person loses focus, the boat slows down or goes off course.
Last year, I joined my school’s dragon boat team. At first, we argued about who should lead. Our coach told us, “In traditional Chinese culture, harmony (和谐) is key. Teamwork means every team member matters.” We practiced hard, learning to trust each other. During races, we shouted,“One, two, one, two!” and the boat darted forward.
However, the race day was windy. Our boat faced strong waves. Instead of feeling afraid, we rowed harder, following the drummer’s steady beats. We didn’t win first place, but we felt proud because we acted as one team. The festival reminded us that success isn’t just about speed; it’s about sticking together through challenges.
1.What is one main purpose of the Dragon Boat Festival besides eating zongzi?
2.How many people are there in a dragon boat team?
3.What role does the drummer play?
4.Why did the team feel proud even without winning?
5.How can we use the lesson of dragon boat teamwork in our daily life? Give an example.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month (usually in June). It honors (纪念) Qu Yuan, a famous poet and loyal minister (忠诚的大臣), who lived over 2,000 years ago. When his kingdom was invaded, Qu Yuan drowned (淹死) himself in a river. People raced their boats to save him and threw zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) into the water to feed fish, hoping they wouldn’t eat his body.
Today, the festival is famous for two activities: eating zongzi and dragon boat racing. Zongzi are filled with sweet beans, meat, or egg yolk. Dragon boats are long, colorful boats decorated with dragon heads. Teams race to the beat of drums. People believe it can scare (惊吓) away evil spirits (妖怪). Families also hang special herbs on doors for protection and wear perfumed pouches to stay healthy.

The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month every year. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people.
There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear zhuyu (茱萸) branches or decorate their homes with zhuyu leaves to celebrate it. Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and protect against diseases.
Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. When there are several guests at the table, the host usually introduces them from the oldest to the youngest. When a younger person is presenting something to an older person, two hands are used.
It is a traditional virtue (美德) in China to respect elderly people. That is because the Chinese know that elderly people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn from. So, Chinese people are proud of being old. Besides, to respect the elderly people is to respect yourself tomorrow.

Halloween is a strange holiday. It started several centuries ago in Europe. It began as “Hallow Evening” meaning “holy night”. At that time November 1st was called “All Saints’ Day” and people honoured all the saints who did not have their own special day. People believed that October 31st was the time when all the evil spirits were supposed to be active. So people would play all sorts of pranks on each other.
Black is one of the traditional Halloween colors, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night. Pumpkins are a symbol of Halloween, so orange has become the other traditional Halloween-color. Making lanterns out of pumpkins is a Halloween custom.
Halloween is great fun for children. They dress up as ghosts (鬼), witches (女巫). Small children go “Trick-or-Treating”. They wear costumes, knock on doors, and shout, “Trick or Treat!” People almost always choose to give them candy as a treat, instead of choosing to receive a trick from the children. Adults sometimes “trick or treat” their friends, too. Usually the “treat” is a glass of wine or some small gifts.
