When I was a little boy, my parents managed every minute of my life. Well, my wish came true! Although my parents were very worried about leaving me, they had to go away on business for a few days. Great! I could have fun at last! As soon as I got home from school the first day, I happily threw my schoolbag on the sofa and ate lots of snacks. Then I enjoyed an exciting film on TV, and after that I played computer games. I liked the games so much that I played until midnight.
The next morning I woke up late. I had to hurry to school without breakfast, but I was still late. The teacher asked me for my homework, but I could not hand it in. With an empty stomach, I was unable to play basketball with my classmates! I felt tired and sleepy at school all day long.
When I got home, I tried to cook some rice, but I burnt it. I even dropped my father’s cup when I was cooking! It fell to pieces. I found myself so bad at simple cooking tasks. I started to feel lonely. I wanted Mum and Dad to come home soon. Mum cooked such delicious food, and made sure I never forgot my homework. Dad always helped me solve many difficult problems, and told funny jokes when I was unhappy. Then I realized that being home alone was not always perfect. Over the next few days, I slowly learnt some things.
When my parents came home, they were happy to find that I could cook and tidy up the house. I told them my home-alone story and we all laughed.

Should parents ask their children to do chores? Some don’t think that children should do chores, because they think children are too young. But many people think that children should do chores.
In fact, children can get a sense of happiness when they do chores. Parents should help children learn to do housework that they will have to do when they live on their own.
Most experts (专家) agree that children can learn a lot from doing chores. However, parents should ask the child to do chores at the right time. Parents shouldn’t ask a schoolboy to cook when he is doing his homework. And parents shouldn’t ask their children to do all chores. Children should do chores for half an hour every day.
The chores should suit (适合) the child. When a child does what his parents ask him to do happily, he will probably have the feeling of growing up.
