B
“You are too small Ginny, you will never make an Olympic team,” said my first-ever rowing coach, way back in the late winter of 1978. I had just shared my dream, which was surely outsized at that point, with somebody whose opinion not only mattered, but whose emotional support could play a key role.
Then I was just 20, and still an emerging athlete. Maybe my dream wasn’t based on reality. After all, I had tried out for the national team for the first time the previous year and been cut, I lacked the height that most Olympic rowers have, not to mention much experience as an athlete, and I suffered from asthma, but still. I was shocked by my coach’s response.
Crushed not just by his choice of words, but by his certainty, I left the gym in a panic.
As I walked, I began to rethink my future, making room for my coach’s opinion, pushing my dream aside into a dark corner. A small inner voice had joined forces with the coach’s. “Maybe he’s right.” But then, another voice argued: “What does he know? Why does he get to decide?” Just because my own coach didn’t have faith in me didn’t mean I had to give up on myself so quickly. By the time I arrived back at my apartment, I was mad at my coach and my dream was back on center stage.
Nothing came easy when it came to make that dream come true. I tried out for two more national teams and two different coaches cut me.
But I was driven by my love of the beauty of rowing. I wanted to row among the best and I refused to stop until I achieved my goal.
I made the 1980 team, although I did not get to compete at the Olympics. I kept training for four more years, and finally won silver at the 1984 Olympics.
All the effort was worth the wait. Everything I have today is a result of sticking with that dream. All those hours on the water, in the weight room, and in the stadium. They got me here, where I know now that great dreams need not just time to develop, but firm belief in them. If I am not going to be my own champion for my dream, no one else will. And I will not allow anyone else to decide for me what’s possible.

根据上文““You are too small, , you will never make an Olympic team,” said my first-ever rowing coach, way back in the late winter of 1978.(“Ginny,你太矮了,你永远进不了奥运队,”这是我的第一位划船教练在 1978 年年末时说的话。)”以及第二段“After all, I had tried out for the national team for the first time the previous year and been cut, I lacked the height that most Olympic rowers have, not to mention much experience as an athlete, and I suffered from asthma, but still. 选项A“Hopeless (绝望的)”;选项B“Promising (有希望的)”;选项C“Unrealistic (不现实的)”;选项D“Large in size (大尺寸的)”。
根据文章第二段“After all, I had tried out for the national team for the first time the previous year and been cut, I lacked the height that most Olympic rowers have, not to mention much experience as an athlete, and I suffered from asthma, but still. I was shocked by my coach’s response.(毕竟,我之前一年第一次参加国家队的选拔就被淘汰了,我缺乏大多数奥运划船选手所拥有的身高,更不用说作为运动员的丰富经验了,而且我还患有哮喘,但即便如此。我还是被教练的反应震惊了。)”以及第三段“Crushed not just by his choice of words, but by his certainty, I left the gym in a panic.(我不仅被他的话所打击,更被他话语中的肯定所击垮,我惊慌失措地离开了体育馆。)” 选项A“Acceptable(可接受的)” 不是Ginny对教练反应的感受。故选A。
根据文章第四段“As I walked, I began to rethink my future, making room for my coach’s opinion, pushing my dream aside into a dark corner. A small inner voice had joined forces with the coach’s. “Maybe he’s right.” But then, another voice argued: “What does he know? Why does he get to decide?” Just because my own coach didn’t have faith in me didn’t mean I had to give up on myself so quickly. By the time I arrived back at my apartment, I was mad at my coach and my dream was back on center stage.(我一边走,一边开始重新考虑自己的未来,为教练的意见腾出空间,把我的梦想推到一边,放到了一个黑暗的角落。
根据文章最后一段“They got me here, where I know now that great dreams need not just time to develop, but firm belief in them. If I am not going to be my own champion for my dream, no one else will. And I will not allow anyone else to decide for me what’s possible.(它们把我带到了这里,我现在知道伟大的梦想不仅需要时间来发展,还需要坚定的信念。
C
Research sometimes proves, with data, what we more or less already know(e. g. Exercise is good for you, and polluted air isn’t). Still, sometimes our assumptions are incorrect, and scientific findings surprise researchers, along with the rest of us. A recent example is the phenomenon of disappearing lakes in parts of the frozen treeless Arctic(北极的) region.
You might think these lakes would be expanding, not disappearing. As climate change warms the region — melting(融化)surface snow and ice as well as the permafrost(永冻层)— there should be more surface water, forming larger lakes and even new ones. Recently, however, scientists have observed not just shrinking(缩小的) lakes but lakes that have completely gone away.
Many scientists shared the commonsense expectation that as permafrost melted, lakes would at first expand with meltwater flowing into them. Eventually, researchers made a prediction that progressive warming during the 21st and 22nd centuries would dry out the Arctic, and lakes would begin to shrink. But now it looks as if Arctic lakes are disappearing a century sooner than predicted. A case in point is that some large, age-old lakes shrank dramatically in what appears to have been a matter of months. Scientists have labeled this phenomenon “disastrous lake loss”
What caused this? The frozen solid ground actually contains bits of rock, mineral and organic matter, leaving spaces in between. And because these spaces are filled with solid ice, liquid water cannot readily get inside, but it can when the permafrost melts, allowing more water to get through. Soon after that, around 192 lakes in northwestern Alaska are gone from sight.
Why did scientists miss this? One probable reason is that most climate models assume that the melting of permafrost is driven only by warming air.
New evidence suggests, however, that rainfall — particularly increasing autumn rain — is now contributing significantly to permafrost loss. The rainfall carries heat into the ground. Yet none of the existing models includes such processes.
That is a good example of why — no matter how complex our models are or may one day be — we need direct observation of the natural world.
46. What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A. General knowledge can at times turn out to be true.
B. Commonsense assumptions can sometimes prove wrong.
C. Research findings should be built on popular assumptions.
D. Scientific research is inspired by an unknown phenomenon.
47. Contrary to the general expectation, climate change has caused ________.
A. a rapid rise of water surface B. the permafrost to melt faster
C. many Arctic lakes to grow larger D. the disappearance of many Arctic lakes
48. The disastrous climatic impacts on the Arctic region have been ________.
A. proved with emerging lakes B. underestimated by scientists
C. well predicted by researchers D. shown elsewhere in the world
49. Why is the frozen Arctic ground hard for water to get through?
A. Because of the solid ice within it.
B. Because of its unique composition.
C. Because it is far away from the waters.
D. Because snow rarely melts on frozen ground.
50. What lesson can we learn from the passage?
A. Direct observation is a must for scientific research.
B. Scientific research is guaranteed by sufficient lab facilities.
C. New evidence should be found to back up research findings.
D. Scientific predictions should be mostly based on research models.
46. B 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. A
根据第一段“Research sometimes proves, with data, what we more or less already know.(研究有时会用数据证明我们或多或少已经知道的事情。)”和“Still, sometimes our assumptions are incorrect, and scientific findings surprise researchers, along with the rest of us.(尽管如此,有时我们的假设是不正确的,科学发现让研究人员和我们其他人感到惊讶。)”
根据第二段“You might think these lakes would be expanding, not disappearing.(你可能会认为这些湖泊会扩大,而不是消失。)”和“Recently, however, scientists have observed not just shrinking(缩小的) lakes but lakes that have completely gone away.(然而,最近科学家们不仅观察到湖泊在萎缩,而且还观察到湖泊已经完全消失。)”
根据第三段“But now it looks as if Arctic lakes are disappearing a century sooner than predicted.(但现在看来,北极湖泊的消失似乎比预测的要早一个世纪。)”
根据第四段“And because these spaces are filled with solid ice, liquid water cannot readily get inside,(因为这些空间充满了固体冰,液态水不容易进入,)”可知,因为冻土层中的空间里充满了坚实的冰,导致液体水无法进入。故选A。
根据最后一段“That is a good example of why — no matter how complex our models are or may one day be — we need direct observation of the natural world.(这是一个很好的例子——说明为什么不管我们的例子有多复杂,或者有一天可能会复杂——我们都需要直接观察自然世界。)” 故选A。
D
Ask any readers who their favorite fictional character in a novel is and you'll likely get a detailed explanation about the beloved character that they admire. It might even sound like they're talking about a person they know.
In a study, researchers looked at the brains of a group of people over nine days. Half of the group read the novel Pompeii, and half didn't. After examining, researchers found the readers' brains showed heightened connectivity in some areas. This is likely because the brain imagines the movement and emotions of the character they read about in the book. Even though the participants were then asked not to read the novel, they kept this heightened connectivity. We call that a "shadow activity", almost like a muscle memory. So even after you've finished a book, your brain keeps those benefits for some time afterwards.
It has been suggested that people who read a lot of fiction become more empathic (移情的),because fiction is a simulation (模仿)of social experiences, in which people practice and improve their interpersonal skills. The people who not only read fiction, but felt a high level of "emotion transportation" while reading as compared to people who weren't taken by the story or who read non-fiction displayed higher levels of empathy when tested. Increase of empathy is important for people because empathy is positively related to creativity, performance at work and cooperative behaviors.
Besides, reading improves "Theory of Mind". It is “the ability to understand that others have mental states that are different from one' s own.” Of various activities, reading novels has been found to improve this ability, while watching television programs or movies has been found to do just the opposite a reduced understanding of others and weaker cognitive (认知的)development overall.
Maybe we should put more of a priority on novel-reading. And many readers believe that reading a novel is far better and more meaningful than watching any movie. As David Kidd of the New School study said, “Fiction is not just a simulator of a social experience; it is a social experience."
51. Which of the statements is true according to Paragraph 2?
A. When they finish a book, the brain connectivity disappears.
B. The participants in the study all read the novel Pompeii.
C. Reading novels increases connectivity in our brain.
D. Reading novels helps enhance our memory greatly.
52. What do we know about novel readers from Paragraph 3?
A. They tend to be emotional in social experiences.
B. They are more likely to be innovative and cooperative.
C. They have poor interpersonal skills.
D. They are more sensitive to others' views.
53. What' s the effect of watching TV or movies?
A. It distinguishes your views from those of others.
B. It contributes to your cognitive development.
C. It reduces your empathy for others a lot.
D. It changes your overall mental states.
54. What does the underlined word "priority" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Preference. B. Authority.
C. Exposure. D. Evaluation.
55. What do you think is the best title for the passage?
A. Reading fiction VS Watching movie B. Reading fiction makes a full man
C. Novel-reading is a ''shadow activity" D. Novel-readers share emotions
C 52. B 53. C 54. A 55. D

根据全文内容特别是文章第三段“It has been suggested that people who read a lot of fiction become more empathic (移情的)”可知,文章介绍阅读小说的好处。
本题第4小题,根据最后一段第二句“And many readers believe that reading a novel is far better and more meaningful than watching any movie. (许多读者认为读小说比看电影好得多,也更有意义。)”由此推知,最后一段第一句“Maybe we should put more of a priority on novel-reading.(也许我们应该把阅读小说放在更重要的位置。)”
In the years of my growing up, Dad was strict with me. He made sure I made my bed and did my homework. He would call in advance to make sure there was no alcohol at the party. I got so angry with him for laying down the law. I would scream, “ I hate you!” Dad would yell back, “Good! I don’t care!” Deep down I knew he did.
One time at a party, I drank too much alcohol and got so sick. I said, “ Call my dad.” Next thing, Dad was carrying me to the car. I woke up the next morning, thinking I would definitely be criticised. As expected, I got a roasting, but I now understand why I need discipline.
Dad was 29 when he got his big roles in films. I had an early start at the age of nine with a role in a 1990s TV series, but it wasn’t until I finished film studies that I pursued my career as an actress. Like those early days for Dad, I faced lots of rejections. Working in such a competitive industry, I’ve sometimes thought, “ I can’t do this any more.”
Once, after a trip to Hollywood, I returned to Australia so depressed and spent months in my bedroom painting, listening to Eckhart Tolle’s music and trying to find myself again. Dad sat me down and said,“Alice, I know it’s hard, but it’s all about persistence(坚持不懈).”
Now I get to work with Dad a lot, which I love. We both passionate about acting, which comes from us being so interested in people. If it weren’t for Dad, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He’s my biggest fan, and when you have that in your life you can go a long way.
56. What rules did Alice’s father set for her when she was growing up?(no more than 15 words)
57. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?(no more than 5 words)
58. What did Alice’s father do when she felt depressed?(no more than 5 words)
59. According to the last paragraph, what do Alice and her father have in common?(no more than 10 words)
60. What do you think of Alice’s father? Please explain.(no more than 20 words)
56. She should make her bed, do her homework and drink no alcohol.
Or: Making her bed, doing her homework and drinking no alcohol.
57. I got/was criticised/scolded.
58. He encouraged/comforted/inspired her.
59. They are both passionate about acting and interested in people.
60. He is a good/devoted/caring/loving father because he was strict with his daughter and encouraged her when she was in trouble.Or:He is always supportive/a source of strength.Whenever she is in trouble,he is there for her.

根据文章第一段的句子“He made sure I made my bed and did my homework. He would call in advance to make sure there was no alcohol at the party. I got so angry with him for laying down the law. ”(他确保我整理床铺和做作业。他会提前打电话确认聚会上没有酒。我很生他的气,因为他提出了法律。)可知,作者爱丽斯的父亲给他制定了铺床,做作业和不许喝酒的规章制度。故答案为She should make her bed, do her homework and drink no alcohol. Or: Making her bed, doing her homework and drinking no alcohol.。
根据文章第二段划线句子前面的内容:“Dad was 29 when he got his big roles in films. I had an early start at the age of nine with a role in a 1990s TV series, but it wasn’t until I finished film studies that I pursued my career as an actress. Like those early days for Dad,”(父亲29岁时获得了电影中的重要角色。 I got/was criticized/scolded.。
根据文章第一段内容“Once, after a trip to Hollywood, I returned to Australia so depressed and spent months in my bedroom painting, listening to Eckhart Tolle’s music and trying to find myself again. “You are too small, Ginny, you will never make an Olympic team,” said my first-ever rowing coach, way back in the late winter of 1978.
41. What does the “outsized” in paragraph 1 mean?

A. Acceptable. B. Crushed. C. Frightened.. D. Shocked.

A. She accepted her coach’s judgement and gave up her dream.
B. She didn’t blame her coach for not having faith in her.

D. She felt upset and changed her dream to a more realistic goal.
