When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well the shiny receiver in the box on the wall. I was too little to reach the telephone, but I knew that somewhere inside the wonderful telephone lived an amazing person—her name was Information Please. She could provide anybody’s number and the correct time.
One day, while my mom was out, I hit my finger. It hurt a lot, but no one was home to help. Then I thought of the telephone! I pulled a small chair over, climbed up, and called Information Please. A soft voice said, “Information.” I cried about my finger, and she told me to put ice on it. After that, I called her for everything—help with geography, or homework, and even what my small pet ate.
When our pet bird Petey died, I called her in tears. “Why do birds sing so beautifully and make everyone happy, only to die with their feet up at the bottom of a cage (笼子)?” I asked. She said softly, “Paul, remember there are other worlds to sing in.” Those words made me feel better. At age 9, we moved to Boston. I missed the old phone and never forgot her. Years later, when my plane stopped in Seattle, I called the operator (接线员) in my hometown for “Information Please”. To my surprise, Sally’s voice answered! I asked her to spell “fix”, just like when I was little. She laughed and told me my calls made her day—as she had no kids, she’d looked forward to talking with me.
Three months later, when I called again, a different voice said Sally had died of illness. She left a message: “Tell Paul I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll understand.”

C. He was lonely and needed someone to talk to.
29. What does “there are other worlds to sing in” from the passage mean?
A. Birds fly to magical places when they die.
B. Imagine happy places when you are sad.
C. Love and happiness don’t stop with death.
30. What could be the best title for the story?
A. Memories of a Childhood Pet.

In Zhangye City, northwest China’s Gansu Province, there are some beautiful hills called Colorful Zhangye Danxia. It’s one of China’s special Danxia landforms. With little rain all year round, few plants can live there and there are few rivers. However, when the hot sun shines on the land, the mountains show many colors like red, yellow, orange, green, and white, much like paintings.
Where do these colors come from? Long ago, this area was a huge lake. Rivers carried sand and small stones into the lake. Over millions of years, the sand and small stones were pushed together and turned into hard colorful rocks. Later, the earth moved the land up and the lake dried up. And wind and rain have made the rocks look like what we see today.
These days, it has become so popular that it interests lots of visitors every year. It’s a great place for both enjoying the beauty of nature and learning about geography.
On the other side of the world, in Australia, lies another amazing place called Kakadu National Park. Once, ancient seas covered this land. Because of the Earth’s movement, the seas disappeared when the land rose up. And heavy seasonal rains have changed the land into different kinds of landforms over millions of years. Large rocks reach for the sky like walls. At sunrise, they change from grey to shining gold. When the sun goes down, they turn from yellow to burning red.
Kakadu is a treasure box of human history, too. For tens of thousands of years, first Australians have lived among these rocks. They painted pictures of creation, spirits, animals, and daily life on the rocks. These paintings let us see what life was like long ago.
Zhangye Danxia and Kakadu are like nature’s two amazing artworks. They remind us that every part of our planet has its own beauty. Both show the cultures of their lands. Let’s take care of these treasures and live in peace with our amazing Earth!

Have you ever heard of an AED? AED means Automated External Defibrillator (自动体外除颤器). When someone’s heart suddenly stops beating — an AED can restart it. This small medical machine is truly a life-saver.
Using an AED isn’t as hard as many people think! Using it includes just a few simple steps. First, turn on the AED. It will provide both voice and visual (视觉的) instructions (说明). Next, put the sticky pads on the person’s chest. Make sure to place them where the AED shows. These pads allow the AED to check whether the heart is working well. Then, move away and don’t touch the person until the AED gives another instruction. If the AED says “shock advised,” make sure no one is touching the person, then press the shock button. If not, follow the AED’s instructions for CPR (chest compressions) until the doctors arrive.
Actually, you can find an AED in many public places. In schools, you can usually find it near the gym or the school office. In shopping malls, check the information desks. At airports, look for it on the walls. It is usually marked with a heart symbol, making it easy to be found.
AEDs are important because in cases of a sudden heart stop, every second counts. With an AED, we can help save lives even before the doctors arrive. More and more places are getting AEDs, and more people are learning how to use them. This way, we can be ready to help if someone around us has a heart problem.

29. What does “there are other worlds to sing in” from the passage mean?
A. Birds fly to magical places when they die.
B. Imagine happy places when you are sad.
C. Love and happiness don’t stop with death.
30. What could be the best title for the story?

In Zhangye City northwest China’s Gansu Province, there are some beautiful hills called Colorful Zhangye Danxia.

Lucy has a good friend, Jessica. She loves singing a lot but she is far from excellence. Recently, their school held a singing competition. Jessica really wanted to have a try. As her best friend, Lucy surely supported her and said: “You can make it!” As expected, Jessica tried out for it and prepared hard. But unluckily, she failed and got the lowest score. She even felt that some students laughed at her. Now, Jessica feels down and refuses to talk with anyone. And Lucy feels sad and guilty (自责的), because she didn’t tell Jessica the truth that she was not good at singing.

【答案】例文:
In my opinion, Lucy doesn’t need to feel too guilty. First, her support was out of kindness and friendship, which gave Jessica the courage to try. Second, everyone has the right to pursue their hobbies, and Jessica’s attempt was a valuable experience. Third, it’s hard to predict the result accurately.
Here are my suggestions. Lucy should talk to Jessica sincerely, comfort her and remind her of the progress she made during practice. Also, Lucy can encourage Jessica to keep singing for enjoyment rather than just for competition.
