Salad seeds(生菜种子)that went on a round trip to outer space and back grew at a slightly slower rate than the ones on earth.scientists have found, thanks to thousands of young people who helped conduct an out-of-this-world experiment. The project started in 2015,when British astronaut()Tim Peake took a million rocket seeds with him on his journey to the International Space Station(ISS).The seeds spent six months there before they were sent back to Earth in 2016.In a message sent from the ISS,Peake said the science experiment was to find out if the conditions in space affected the seeds'ability to grow. Around 600,000 pupils at 8,600 schools in the UK were then asked to grow the rocket seeds that had been to space, along with regular seeds that had never left the planet.Peake described the experiment as "one of the largest and most inspirational experiments of its kind. The results of the study, which have just been published, found that the space seeds grew more slowly than the ones that had stayed on Earth.Researchers on the experiment said this was due to the stresses of space travel, such as the zero-gravity atmosphere and high levels of cosmic rays(字宙射线),which slowed the growth of the plants. Now researchers are hopeful that if the seeds are properly protected,it might be possible to grow plants during future space tasks to other planets.Dr Jake Chandler, from University of London, who led the study, said,"The possibility of eating home-grown salad on Mars may be one small step closer. 1.What's the purpose of the science experiment? A.To complete a round trip to the outer space. B.To produce enough food for astronauts in space. C.To develop young people's interest in gardening. D.To test the effect of space on the growth of seeds. 2.How did Tim Peake feel about the experiment? A.Meaningless. B.Doubtful. C.Disappointing. D.Significant. 3.What affected the rocket seeds'ability to grow according to the researchers? A.The size of the seeds. B.The quality of the seeds. C.The condition of the soil. D.The stresses of space travel. 高一学科素养周测评(二十四)英语第1页(共4页) 衡水真 4.What can we infer from the passage? 班级 A.Seeds that had never left the earth grew faster. B.It will be impossible to eat home-grown salad on Mars. C.The result of the experiment had nothing to do with comic rays. 姓名 D.Pupils were just asked to grow seeds that had never been to space. B Not long ago, people could only buy organic food in small shops.Today,it is 得分 common in most major supermarkets. The reason for the increase is that more and more people are demanding food grown without chemicals.Since the 1990s,organic farm production has gone up continuously. This pattern is expected to continue around the globe. Australia leads the world in land used for organic agriculture. It has four times as much land devoted to organic farming as all of Asia. However, most of the land is not very fertile, and it only produces a modest amount of food.Argentina is a distant second, followed by Brazil, the United States and China. In Africa, only a very small amount of land is registered for organic farming. That does not mean Africa relies on chemicals. In fact, many farmers do not use chemicals because they cannot afford them.Yet there are no programmes for these farmers to prove they do not use chemicals.Without these programmes their food can never be approved organic. India has had the most dramatic recent increase in organic farming.Like many other countries,India sees continual growth in organic food sales around the world. This,of course, leads to growth in profits.Sales of organic food were more than doubled from 2000 to 2005.Like India, many countries are trying to increase commercial organic farming to get a share of the sales. This has led to criticism. Some people believe that organic farming should not just be about making money. They think the goal is to help the environment. Others say organic farming will not continue if it is not profitable. They say that people should be able to make money while providing healthy food for mankind. 5.Why do people want to increase organic farming? A.Organic food is good for Earth and the human beings. B.There are fewer chemicals available to the human beings. C.More and more people demand chemicals to grow food. D.Profits from organic farming help make approval programmes. 6.From the passage,it can be said that A.India uses the least land to organic farming B.Brazil uses less land to organic farming than China C.the US is the fourth largest organic farming country D.China and India have the same amount of organic farmland 7.It can be inferred from the passage that A.people who eat food with chemicals have shorter lifespan B.India will soon become the largest country of growing organic food C.more countries will farm organically as the environment gets worse D.there will be fewer organic farms if the demand for organic food goes down 题密卷 高一学科素养周测评(二十四)英语第2页(共4页) 1 8.What is the passage mainly about? D.Countries all want to make money from organic farming. 第二节(共5小题;每小题6分,满分30分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 You may have grown up living with sisters and brothers,or this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else.9 However,it can also be a great part of your college experience.Follow these tips to make sure you and your roommate keep things pleasant and supportive throughout the year. Be clear from the beginning. Maybe you hate it when someone interrupts you when you are sleeping every morning.Maybe you need ten minutes to yourself before talking to anyone after you wake up.10 It's not fair to expect him or her to pick up on them right away, and communicating what you need is one of the best ways to get rid of problems before they become problems. 11 This may seem simple, but it's probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience conflicts.Don't you think he'll mind if you borrow his shoes for a quick soccer game? For all you know, you just stepped over the line.Don't borrow, use,or take anything without getting permission first. Be open to change. You should expect to learn and grow and change during your time at school.12 As the term progresses, realize things will change for both of you.Be comfortable setting things that unexpectedly come up,setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing environment. Follow the golden rule. 13 No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect. A.Respect your roommate's things. B.You should correct your bad habits first. C.Having a roommate surely has its challenges. D.Let your roommate know about your preferences.
