The 97-year-old botanist,Margaret Bradshaw,is the chief
caretaker of Teesdale's rarest flowers."Everything about Teesdale
is unique,"says Bradshaw with pride-and the authority of
someone who has just written a 288-page book on the subject.
Bradshaw has been recording rare plants here since the early 1950s
and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first to prove
that-and the need to do something about it.
The main reason for the decrease of these plants is an unusual
one.The number of sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by
2000,as the uplands were generally believed there were too many
sheep.Bradshaw says while sheep are hunted in some upland areas,
reducing herding in Teesdale has been destructive.Longer grass
overshadows the delicate(矫嫩的)flowers, taking away the light
they need to grow.As a result of her findings and her work with
farmers who herd the land-as well as Natural England, which
manages it -sheep numbers are increasing and the timing of
herding is being carefully managed. This has led to the partial
recovery of some plants.
At 93,she set up Teesdale Special Flora Research and
Conservation Trust to record rare plants.A keen horse rider,at 95,
she did a 55-mile horse journey across Teesdale, raising almost
$10,000 for the Trust. When asked about the secret to longevity,
“Just keep going,”she says.
“Keep at it.Don't sit down and just watch TV.”
"I recognise I'm getting older and I've been trying to get more
people to take over and do the records. They don't believe I won't be
here forever,"Bradshaw says.Despite Bradshaw's guardianship of
this land, and the love and energy she has put into saving it,the
future here is unknown. The last words of her book speak to this
endless loss."This is our heritage, this unique plant species, mine
and yours, she writes."In spite of trying,I have failed to prevent
its decrease;now it is up to you.
4.What is Margaret Bradshaw's main work with the rare plants?
[A]Writing a book.

Lens fogging(镜片起雾)has been troubling glasses wearers for
as long as glasses have existed;it happens more often to those
needing to wear masks().Researchers from ETH Zurich in
Switzerland may have finally come up with a lasting solution to the
problem that works whether someone is wearing a mask,or they've
just come inside from the cold.
There's no real mystery as to the foggy lenses. It happens when
moisture(水分,水汽)in wet air,or from someone's breath,hits a
glasses lens that's colder than said moisture, which then becomes
obvious drops. It happens a lot in the winter, when people are
coming in from the outside to warm places,or when people breathe
out with masks, the warm, wet air goes upwards.
It's also a problem that plagues car windows, making it hard
for a driver to see.The simple solution there is to heat the
windows. But adding electric heaters to glasses, which are designed
to be lightweight and comfortable to wear, isn't really a choice. So
ETH Zurich researchers came up with another way to heat glasses
lenses. They rely on a new type of glass coating that effectively does
the same thing.
The coating is made from very thin gold in such small amounts
that the added cost would be very small. The gold takes in a kind of
light from the sun, causing glasses lenses to heat up by up to eight
degrees.By doing this,it can prevent moisture in the air from
forming on the glasses. The coating also cannot be seen by human
eyes,not influencing people's views.Because it's so thin,the
coating can even be applied to surfaces that are not flat.
But this method isn't perfect. As the gold draws the energy it
needs to heat lenses from the sun,the coating won't do much good
in the winter months, when it starts to get dark by late afternoon.
But the researchers believe that even a small amount of electricity,
校本单元评估
like from a battery hidden away in the arms of a pair of glasses,
would be enough. And with gold being one of the most valuable
metals on earth and still in high demand the researchers are looking
for other metals to replace it.
8.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
[A]How to keep your glasses clear.
[B]When moisture becomes drops.
[c]What weakness glasses have.
[D]Why glasses get foggy.
9.What does the underlined word "plagues"in Paragraph 3 probably
mean?
[A]Changes.
[B]Controls.
[c]Troubles.
[D]Measures.
10.How can the gold coating prevent fog's formation?
[A]By making the glasses reflective.
[B]By using sunlight to heat the glasses.
[c]By smoothing the surface of the glasses.
[D]By taking in the moisture on the glasses.
11.What's a disadvantage of the coating?
[A]It's limited by temperature.
[B]It's used on few surfaces.
[c]It's not thin enough.
[D]It's energy-wasting.

Fed up with tourists who only come in to check out the scenery,
the owners of Queviures Murria,a grocery store in Barcelona,
Spain, have put up a sign announcing a 5 euro fee for coming in just
to look.
Queviures Murria has been in business since 1898 and is one of
the most eye-catching locations in all of Barcelona. The vintage
look of the store and the traditional design of the inside attract
hundreds of tourists every day,but the problem is that many of
them aren't actually interested in the products sold inside-all kinds
of traditional Spanish cured sausages, cold cuts, cured cheeses,
oils, wines, etc.According to the store, many tourists enter the
2
store without even saying a simple "hello",wander around taking
pictures, and then simply leave without buying anything. So it
decided to charge people for "just looking"just to discourage them.
Toni Merino, one of the managers at Queviures Murria, said
that the idea to charge tourists a fee for simply coming into the
grocery store and looking around without buying anything started
out as a joke, but as the staff and the regular customers became
increasingly inconvenienced by random tourists looking around,
taking pictures, with absolutely no interest in the products on
display,they decided to do it.
Merino has clarified that he and his partners have no interest in
actually charging the fee,and they don't really have to anymore.By
posting a warning about the 5 euro fee in the shop window, they
have managed to discourage most unwanted visitors.
After photos of the 5-euro fee announcement in the window of
Queviures Murria spread quickly on social media, the Barcelona
business faced a public outcry, and it was forced to explain the
reasons and clarify that it didn't really plan on carrying on the
measure.
12.What can we learn about Queviures Murria?
[A]Tourists are not welcome there.
[B]It has a history of nearly 100 years.
[c]It charges people for taking photos.
[D]Tourists prefer its design to the products sold there.
13.Why did the grocery store put up the sign?
[A]To earn a fame.
[B]To attract more tourists.
[c]To warn the impolite visitors.
[D]To provide a convenient shopping environment.
14.What's the public's opinion on the measure?
[A]Opposed.
[B]Objective.
[c]Supportive.
[D]Unconcerned.
15.Where is this text probably taken from?
[A]A travel journal.
[B]A news website.
[c]A fashion magazine.
[D]A debate program.

Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small

The holidays were drawing near, and we were offered $25 for

The Elder I Want to Thank Most
Everyone has many elders to thank in his/her life,
and the one I want to thank most is my mother,a
considerate lady who cares me in every aspect of my life.
I am grateful to her for many reasons.Since I was
born, she has always been there for me.She is my first
life coach. It is she who brings me up to be a well-
behaved and honest person.Busy though she is,she has
never ignored me.
In short,I owe my mother a great deal,for I
couldn't be who I am today without her.

The Christmas lights and decorations attracted me,
and I slowed my pace.Only then did I realise that we
had no lights,no decorations and no food for Christmas.
Guilt and shame seized me.With boots still in my mind,
I tried to convince myself there was at least bread
tonight.However,my family's disappointed faces
appeared in my mind. After what seemed like ages,I
finally stepped into the grocery store, eyes filled with
determination.I bought a turkey,a ham,oranges and
some Christmas decorations.I spent every cent of my
hard-earned money and returned home with groceries.

参考答案与精析
Once home,I piled the groceries on the ground and
knocked at the door.Out came my thin mum.She
spotted these groceries and her eyes widened in shock.
Tears misting my eyes,I looked up,yelling,"Merry
Christmas,Mum!"Words seemed to fail to convey her
emotions so she hugged me with a choking "Thanks".I
felt a sense of pride and achievement.I would never have
had such satisfaction if I had bought the boots then.I
had a lot to explain as we unpacked the groceries. That
night,I,an eleven-year-old boy,received the most
precious Christmas gift-my responsibility for my
family.
