Growing up in Nairobi, Kenya, Karanja faced a unique struggle among her peers. While her friends shared tales of their fathers’ habits, Karanja felt disconnected. “I can’t stand listening to my friends complain about their dads, because I don’t get to experience my dad the same way they get to experience theirs,” she explains. Her father, a teacher, was diagnosed with early dementia (痴呆) when she was still a teenager, an event that profoundly shaped her life.
Now at 32, Karanja reflects on the moments her father has missed, including her graduation and career milestones. Yet, through this personal tragedy, Karanja found her “purpose”. As a project manager at the Brain and Mind Institute at Nairobi’s Aga Khan University, she’s devoted her career to helping families understand and manage caregiving.
Karanja notes that in Kenya, many believe dementia is merely a normal part of aging or caused by spiritual issues. This misconception often prevents families from seeking help and understanding the condition. To counter these beliefs, Karanja emphasizes education, explaining that “dementia is caused by changes in the brain”. Besides, the shortage of neurologists in Kenya poses a significant barrier to diagnosis. With only about 30 neurologists for a population exceeding 55 million, accessing professional help is often a luxury few can afford.
Understanding dementia as a “disease of moments”, she highlights the importance of coping strategies for caregivers. Music, she notes, can temporarily uplift a person’s mood, illustrating the dynamic (动态的) nature of the condition. Supporting caregivers is also crucial, as they must maintain their well-being to effectively care for their loved ones.
Karanja’s own mother found relief and renewed energy through faith and community support. However, finding such assistance is often challenging, leaving many to rely on community members for help. For Karanja, the small joys come from knowing her father is cared for with dignity, even if he no longer recognizes her.
4. Why did Karanja feel disconnected from her peers while growing up?
A. She struggled with her father’s absence. B. She had different hobbies from her peers.
C. She couldn’t relate to their father’s stories. D. She complained about her father’s dementia.
5. What drove Karanja to take up dementia-related work?
A. The desire to learn professional care skills. B. Her mother’s reliance on faith and support.
C. The experience of her father’s dementia. D. The shortage of neurologists in Kenya.
6. What does Karanja mean by calling dementia a “disease of moments”?
A. Patients lose all their memories in a single moment.
B. Dementia patients’ emotional state keeps changing.
C. Caregivers have to stay with patients every moment.
D. Dementia will suddenly disappear after certain moments.
7. How does Karanja feel about her father’s current condition?
A. Comforted. B. Anxious. C. Disappointed. D. Grateful.
【答案】4. C 5. C 6. B 7. A
【解析】

For many students, artificial intelligence (AI) has become as standard a tool as a notebook or a calculator. Whether it’s organizing revision notes or generating flashcards, AI is fast becoming a go-to companion in academic life. At first, many people saw AI tools as a form of cheating that could damage our critical thinking skills. But now, the perspective is shifting. Many are beginning to see AI more like a study partner — a conversational tool designed to motivate understanding and help us improve.
Used wisely, AI can be a powerful self-study tool. One of its key benefits is creating a personalized learning experience. AI can analyze a student’s responses in real time and adapt lessons dynamically. For example, if a student is struggling with a math concept, an AI platform can provide more practice problems and detailed explanations until the concept is mastered. This tailored approach allows every student to learn at their own pace and build confidence gradually.
Furthermore, AI can make studying more interactive and engaging. Students can upload their class notes and ask an AI tool to generate practice exam questions or multiple-choice quizzes. They can have a conversation with the AI, asking it to explain complex topics in simpler terms or create diagrams to visualize difficult concepts. This kind of interaction helps break down complex tasks and clarify ideas, much like a human tutor would, but with unlimited patience and instant feedback.
Of course, it is important to use AI responsibly. Educators advise that AI should be used to assist, not replace, learning. The goal is not to have AI do the work for you, but to use it as a tool to deepen your own understanding and develop your essential skills. As with any powerful tool, the key is to approach it with both curiosity and critical awareness.
8. Why have people’s views on AI changed?
A. AI completely stops students cheating. B. AI can act as a helpful study partner.
C. AI gets rid of most learning difficulties. D. AI organizes various revision notes rapidly.
9. How does AI achieve personalized learning?
A. By adjusting learning content accordingly. B. By reducing students’ homework gradually.
C. By promoting group study among students. D. By providing masses of learning resources.
10. What can we know about AI from paragraph 3?
A. It assists teachers in giving explanations. B. It offers quick response and great patience.
C. It can judge students’ study progress directly. D. It can create artworks for learning materials.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Risks of overusing AI in school studies. B. Practical tips to avoid AI-related cheating.
C. Benefits and proper use of AI in learning. D. AI-driven ways to improve academic performance.

Some of the universe’s earliest massive galaxies (星系) may have much more mass than astronomers once believed. Their brightest stars are easy to see, but many small, faint stars may be hidden by their light. This means these galaxies may be much heavier than earlier studies suggested.
An international team used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Very Large Telescope to study nine massive galaxies. These galaxies stopped forming stars billions of years ago. By combining the observations, the researchers were able, for the first time, to reliably estimate (估计) the relative numbers of tiny, faint stars and much larger, brighter stars in galaxies at such great distances.
“These galaxies are different,” said Joel Leja, a professor at Penn State. “They’re different in a way that is really challenging to understand, because they are more massive than we expected.”
To uncover those faint star populations, astronomers separated each galaxy’s light into a spectrum, where small differences in color reveal which kinds of stars are present. Bright stars usually dominate the spectrum, so faint stars were difficult to find. Researchers used models to better understand the light.
Astronomers have traditionally estimated the unseen mass contained in small, faint stars by assuming that stars form in roughly the same proportions throughout the universe. The new measurements challenge that assumption. They indicate that the most massive galaxies in the early universe contain a substantially larger share of low-mass stars than less massive galaxies such as the Milky Way.
“This discovery has major implications for our understanding of the early universe,” said Leja. “Since the launch of JWST, astronomers have found surprisingly massive and mature galaxies that already existed shortly after the Big Bang. If these galaxies really contain more low-mass stars, their total mass may also have been underestimated.”
Over the next several years, the researchers plan to apply the same method to galaxies from even earlier periods, bringing them closer to the epoch when the universe’s first generations of stars and galaxies formed.
12. How did the researchers find faint stars?
A. By comparing the sizes of galaxies.
B. By observing stars from the Milky Way.
C. By examining differences in galaxy light.
D. By measuring changes in star movement.
13. What does the underlined word “implications” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Possible effects. B. Hidden reasons. C. New disadvantages. D. Various opinions.
14. What does the researchers’ future plan show?
A. Earlier galaxies are easier to study now.
B. Galaxy formation is no longer a mystery.
C. Their current method has proved perfect.
D. The discovery of faint stars may lead to wider research.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A Study of the Milky Way B. A New Look at Early Galaxies
C. Changes in Space Technology D. The Formation of Nine Galaxies
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. B

【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段中“This discovery has major implications for our understanding of the early universe (这一发现对我们理解早期宇宙具有重大的implications。)”及后文“Since the launch of JWST, astronomers have found surprisingly massive and mature galaxies that already existed shortly after the Big Bang. If these galaxies really contain more low-mass stars, their total mass may also have been underestimated. (自从詹姆斯·韦伯太空望远镜(JWST)发射以来,天文学家发现了令人惊讶的巨大而成熟的星系,它们在大爆炸后不久就已经存在。如果这些星系确实含有更多低质量恒星,那么它们的总质量也可能被低估了。)”可知,这一发现对我们理解早期宇宙有重大影响,implications意为“可能的影响”。
【14题详解】

【答案】Dear Mr. Henry,
I’m writing to share my opinions on the “Most Beautiful Classroom” competition held in our school. This activity is really meaningful. It encourages us to decorate our classrooms and build a warmer learning environment.
However, I notice some problems. The judging standards are not clear enough, and only photos are used for evaluation, which cannot show the real atmosphere of the classrooms. Thus, I propose listing detailed rules and inviting some students as judges. Besides, short on-site visits will help make the result fairer.
I hope my suggestions will contribute to its better development.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mr. Sinclair was a retired worker with no children of his own and he had spent decades on his work before settling into the quiet life. He had a nephew named Robert, who lived three states away and visited him just once a year on Christmas Eve. The rest of the year, Mr. Sinclair lived alone, tending his small garden.
On a Tuesday afternoon, Kelly Grant and her family pulled into the driveway of their new home, extremely tired from the long drive and surrounded by cardboard boxes that seemed to multiply (迅速增加) rather than diminish (减少). Kelly was standing there, wondering where on earth she might find the coffee maker when Mr Sinclair appeared with kind words and a tasty cake. The cake was still warm. Sensing their tiredness, Mr. Sinclair didn’t stay long. However, he left behind not only the cake but also his phone number written on a small card, with an offer to help with anything they might need.
In the following months, the Grants came to understand that Mr. Sinclair’s quiet generosity extended far beyond their own doorstep. He removed snow from the Hendersons’ walkway before they woke each winter morning. He left fresh tomatoes and cucumbers from his garden on the porches of the Millers and the Carters who were struggling to make ends meet. The neighborhood children had taken to calling him Grandpa Sinclair, though they weren’t related by blood.
Years passed, and Mr. Sinclair grew old, yet his porch (走廊) light still burned each evening. One September morning, Kelly noticed a letter on Mr. Sinclair’s porch table, announcing his upcoming 100th birthday. She saw the date — circled in red on his calendar — was the very next day, but said nothing to him. However, a quiet plan had already begun to take shape in her heart. That afternoon, she quietly visited every house on the street.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
By evening, the quiet street got busy with secret preparations. Mrs Henderson baked three apple pies. The smell of apples and sugar filled her kitchen, and the room felt warm and nice. Kelly and the Carters hung paper lanterns between the maple trees. The Millers practiced an old song in a garage nearby. Robert received a call and booked the first flight out, his voice thick with emotion. No one spoke of it openly, yet each window glowed with the shared warmth of a promise kept in silence.
The next morning, Kelly covered Mr. Sinclair’s eyes and led him onto his porch. When Kelly lowered her hand, Mr. Sinclair stood there in surprise. “Happy 100th birthday!” everyone shouted loudly. The street had become a sea of familiar faces, flags, and folding chairs. The Millers struck up the old song they had rehearsed the night before. Robert stood at the front, his eyes bright. Mr. Sinclair walked down his steps slowly and took the seat of honor. He raised a trembling hand in salute, and the crowd responded with thunderous applause. A tear ran down his cheek, but he was smiling.

D. Grateful.
