2
Bill Bowerman was a track coach. He
wanted to help athletes run faster. So he had
learnt how to make running shoes. He had also
started a shoe company with a friend. It was
1971.Running shoes at the time were heavy.
They had spikes(鞋钉)on the sole(鞋底).The
spikes tore up the track and slowed down
runners.
To make a lighter shoe,Bill tried the skins
of fish.To make a better sole,he wanted to
replace the spikes.Bill dug through his wife
Barbara's jewelry box.He hoped to find a piece
of jewelry with an interesting pattern. He would
then copy the pattern onto the new soles.
Nothing worked.Bill was defeated.
Then,one Sunday morning,Barbara made
Bill waffles(华夫饼)for breakfast..Bill watched
her cook.
He studied the criss-cross pattern on a
waffle iron.
Inspiration struck.The pattern on the
waffle iron was just what Bill was looking for.
The squares were flatter and wider than sharp
spikes. The pattern would help the shoes hold
any surface without tearing up it.
When Barbara left the house,Bill ran to his
lab.He took the liquid chemicals that, when
mixed, would harden into the sole of a shoe.He
poured the mixture into the waffle iron-and the
Waffle Trainer was born.
Bill's company put the Waffle Trainer on
market in 1974.It was a huge hit.Maybe you've
heard of that company, and today it's worth
around 100 billion.
It was the waffle iron that had changed the
course of Bill's life-and helped turn the
company into a well-known one.Today,the
waffle iron is kept at the company's
headquarters. It serves as a reminder that if we
keep trying,we can find a solution to even the
most difficult problems. And those solutions can
come from unlikely places, even the breakfast
table.
1.What shortcomings did the old-style running
shoes have?

Sometimes a person who thinks in an
unusual way can look at the world from a
different point of view.Such was Richard
Phillips Feynman,a role model change maker.
Born in 1918,he began showing some unusual
qualities.
The first sign of Feynman's unique qualities
was that he hadn't yet spoken by age three. But
young Feynman showed a talent for math and
engineering.He enjoyed repairing household
objects, and built a simple laboratory in his
room.By the time he was in high school,he was
experimenting with things which were only
taught to college students.

After Richard Feynman graduated from high
school in 1935,he studied at MIT.Despite the
fact that his grades in science and math were "the
best that we've seen",according to Princeton
University,he was almost rejected due to his
very poor grades in writing and his Jewish
religion.Finally,he was accepted and continued
to study physics at Princeton University where
he got his PhD.His lectures attracted many
great scientists of the time, including Albert
Einstein.
At Princeton University,Feynman began
his most famous work:his work on nuclear
weapons. He moved to a lab and not all of his
work there has been released to the public, but
we know he performed experiments related to
uranium ()After the war,Feynman taught
at Cornell University, where he continued his
studies. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize for
his work in particle physics(粒子物理学).
Then,in 1987,Feynman developed cancer
and died a year later.Though Feynman and his
work are honoured by physicists across the
world, his personal qualities and skills are what
really makes him unique.Faced with all the
challenges,he never gave up,doing work that he
loved until the day he died.

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm,Germany
on 14 March,1879.1 Einstein was so smart
that at the age of 16 he wrote his first paper.
However,Einstein did badly at school.2
He ended up at college in Switzerland. His
grades meant it was difficult to get a job after
college, but a friend found him work finally.
Albert had a great year in 1905,publishing
(发表)four scientific papers!3 One of the
things he researched was that energy and mass
(质量)are different forms of the same thing.
This was explained by his famous equation E=
mc2.In 1909 Albert was finally made a professor
at the University of Zurich. He continued
improving his work, and in 1915 he published his
theory of general relativity(广义相对论).
In 1919,one of Albert's theories was
proved, making him the most famous scientist
alive!4 His work changed the way we think
about time and space, and also helped with
developments like the television.
5 And in 1933,Albert decided to stay in
the USA forever. He became an American in
l940.Sadly,Einstein's work with atoms(原子)
led to the invention of the atomic bomb.Albert
spent the rest of his life taking part in activities
for world peace. He died in 1955.
A.Albert spent lots of time in America.
B.Einstein loved to use his imagination.
C.His work turned modern physics on its head.
D.Even as an adult,Einstein was disorganised.
E.As a child,he enjoyed solving math problems.
F.And he won the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics.
