A few months ago, I was working on an article about oceans across the solar system. Having read my fill about oceans of water, I turned to goggle for information about oceans made of other stuff, like liquid hydrocarbons. I hoped to find reliable (可靠的) results, perhaps from NASA. Instead, Google’s AI feature suggested Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, known for its saltwater ocean. This made me mad because it was not the information I was looking for.
This is a small example of how AI can fail. Arvind Narayanan and Sayash Kapoor highlight many more concerning examples in their new book AI Snake Oil. They write about AI tools that say they can predict (预测) things like academic success, disease risk, or even wars. Along the way, the authors also explore many other issue with AI, covering misinformation, privacy, and copyright. They address whether we should be afraid of AI, concluding. “We should be far more concerned about what people will do with AI than with what AI will do on its own.”
The authors point out that the technology is advancing quickly. Some of the details may be out of date — or at least old news — by the time the book makes it into your hands. For example, predictive AI, which aims to foresee future events, often fails because human behavior is too complex to predict. The authors believe that many AI systems are “snake oil” meaning they do not work as promised.
When it comes to why these problems exist and how to change them, Narayanan and Kapoor bring a clear point of view: Society has given too much freedom to the teach industry, “We are not okay with leaving the future of AI up to the people currently in charge.” they write.
This book is a wake-up call for anyone who uses AI or makes decisions about it, encouraging us to think critically (批判地) and use AI responsible.
4. Why does the author mention the example in paragraph 1?
A. To show the disadvantage of AI B. To prove the reliability of AI
C. To explore the power of Google. D. To share a scientific discovery.
5. What do Narayanan and Kapoor find more concerning?
A. What AI will do by itself. B. How people choose to use AI
C. What is spreading online D. How AI systems are stopped.
6. What do Narayanan and Kapoor suggest about AI development?
A. Leaving it growing fast. B. Giving it enough freedom
C. Putting it under control D. Preventing it immediately.
7. What is the text?
A. A diary entry. B. A news report.
C. A book review. D. A research paper.
A 5. B 6. C 7. C

Air pollution remains a global health crisis, responsible for 4.7 million early deaths worldwide in 2021 — about the same as road-traffic accidents, malaria and suicides combined. While road traffic significantly contributes to this problem, the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) presents both promise and challenges that deserve careful examination.
Unlike traditional cars, EVs produce no direct exhaust emissions (尾气排放), making them crucial for urban air quality improvement. However, they still produce considerable non-exhaust pollutants from brake, tire and road wear (磨损). These micro particles (颗粒), particularly those smaller than 2.5 microns, pose serious health risks by getting into the lungs and other organs via the bloodstream, potentially causing heart or lung disease, stroke, and cancer.
One 2021 study by researchers at the University of Southampton found some brake-pad dust seems more damaging to lung cells, partly due to higher levels of copper, which can damage cells and DNA. Scientists estimate that EVs produce more of these non-exhaust particles than other cars because their batteries make them heavier, the weight averaging 2,133 kg, compared to 1,500-1,800 kg for traditional vehicles, causing them to generate more friction (摩擦).
Despite this, EVs are still mostly less polluting than other cars. They maintain an environmental advantage partly through regenerative braking systems where when the driver removes their foot from the pedal, the continued forward motion of the car is harvested to recharge the battery, thereby slowing the car down. Comparative studies show EVs emit about 14 mg/ km of fine particles versus 18 mg/ km for petrol when accounting for all sources.
To maximize EV benefits, several strategies are significant. One way is to regulate non-exhaust emissions in a similar way to exhaust. Encouraging people to consider smaller cars, though difficult, would be another, as bigger sizes often mean larger and heavier batteries and the extra range provided by largest batteries may never be needed. Plus, the electricity powering EVs must come from renewable sources to avoid simply relocating pollution to power plants.
8. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To promote the use of EVs.
B. To discuss the advantages and disadvantages of EVs.
C. To argue about car pollution.
D. To compare two types of vehicle pollution.
9. How do regenerative braking systems in EVs reduce pollution?
A. Stop using brakes completely B. Turn motion into battery power
C. Prevent harmful particles D. Make the car lighter.
10. Which best explains “relocating” in Paragraph 5?
A. reducing. B. shifting. C. hiding. D. measuring.
11. What can be inferred about oversized EVs?
A. They may cause unnecessary pollution.
B. They help regulate emissions.
C. They are powered with renewable sources.
D. They show technological progress.
B 9. B 10. B 11. A
根据文章第四段“They maintain an environmental advantage partly through regenerative braking systems where when the driver removes their foot from the pedal, the continued forward motion of the car is harvested to recharge the battery, thereby slowing the car down.(它们的环境优势部分源于再生制动系统:当司机松开踏板时,汽车持续的前进动力会被回收以给电池充电,从而使汽车减速。)”
根据划线单词所在语境“Plus, the electricity powering EVs must come from renewable sources to avoid simply relocating pollution to power plants.(此外,为电动汽车供电的电力必须来自可再生能源,以避免污染只是简单地……到发电厂。)”可知,若电动汽车的电力来自非可再生能源,污染就会从汽车转移到发电厂。划线单词意为“转移”,选项B“shifting”意为“转移”,与此相符。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“Encouraging people to consider smaller cars, though difficult, would be another, as bigger sizes often mean larger and heavier batteries and the extra range provided by largest batteries may never be needed.(鼓励人们考虑购买小型汽车——尽管这并非易事,因为车身越大,通常意味着电池越大、越重,而最大容量电池所提供的额外续航里程可能根本用不上。)” 故选A。
D
While sending gifts, we naturally make choices based on the receiver. But what if we have been wrong all along and that we could turn things around, which not only made gift buying easier, but the receiver happier?
In 2015, a psychologist Lauren Human did an online survey which suggested that when buying gifts, people preferred to choose something based on the receiver’s personality and tastes. Most people also said they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.
But Human wondered if this method of giving failed to take advantage of the way we connect as people. So he sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “shows your knowledge of the receiver” while the others bought a card that “shows your true self”. After shopping, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling closer to their mothers.
To study how the method is received by receivers, he did another test, asking 100 students to choose a song to a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group followed the same instructions as the card buyers. Results suggested that the receivers of songs which showed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in mind.
Human suggests it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the goal” of a gift and surely it should be — then we “may well be advised to offer gifts showing ourselves more”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely satisfy the receiver’s practical needs or tastes as one gift gained simply with that in mind. Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act because it decreases the risk of showing poor knowledge of a receiver by trying to buy something that fits their character and failing.
12. What was the main finding of Lauren Human’s online survey in 2015?
A. People prefer giving gifts based on their own tastes.
B. Most people choose gifts that reflect the receiver’s personality.
C. Receivers dislike gifts that show the giver’s true self.
D. Gifts bought for special occasions are more meaningful.
13. What can we learn from the Mother’s Day card test?
A. Most people choose gifts with the receiver in mind.
B. Most people choose gifts based on their personal tastes.
C. Gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the giver.
D. Gifts chosen with the receiver in mind work well on the receiver.
14. What matters most in gift giving according to the text?
A. Making the giver’s life happier.
B. Meeting the receiver’s practical needs.
C. Showing one’s knowledge of the receiver.
D. Building and strengthening social connections.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Art of Choosing Perfect Gifts
B. The Psychology Behind Perfect Gift Selection
C. Why Self-Reflective Gifts Strengthen Bonds
D. How to Avoid Gift-Giving Mistakes
B 13. C 14. D 15. C
根据文章第二段“In 2015, a psychologist Lauren Human did an online survey which suggested that when buying gifts, people preferred to choose something based on the receiver’s personality and tastes. Most people also said they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.( 2015年,心理学家Lauren Human做了一项在线调查,结果显示,人们买礼物时更倾向于根据收礼人的性格和喜好来挑选。大多数人也表示,他们更喜欢收到那些明显是为自己精心挑选的礼物 —— 也就是“为他们而选”的礼物。)”可知,Lauren Human 2015年的在线调查主要发现是:人们买礼物时倾向于根据收礼人的性格和喜好来挑选,且大多数人也喜欢收到为自己精心挑选的礼物。故选B。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“So he sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “shows your knowledge of the receiver” while the others bought a card that “shows your true self”. After shopping, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling closer to their mothers.(于是,在母亲节前夕,他让78名志愿者去购物中心购物。一半人被要求买一张“能体现你对收礼人了解”的贺卡,另一半人则要买一张“能展现真实自我”的贺卡。购物结束后,那些在挑选时多少考虑了自身的送礼者表示,自己感觉和母亲的距离更近了。)”可知,在母亲节卡片测试中,那些在选择礼物时部分考虑到自己的送礼者,报告说感觉与母亲更亲近了。这说明考虑到送礼者自身的礼物对送礼者效果很好。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第五段“Human suggests it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the goal” of a gift and surely it should be — then we “may well be advised to offer gifts showing ourselves more”.(Human认为,这一点可能适用于所有礼物。“如果送礼物的目的是建立更牢固的社会关系——而且毫无疑问理应如此——那么我们‘或许应该多送一些能展现自我的礼物’。)”可知,送礼的目标应该是建立更牢固的社会联系,这也是送礼中最重要的事。故选D。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章最后一段“In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely satisfy the receiver’ s practical needs or tastes as one gift gained simply with that in mind. Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act because it decreases the risk of showing poor knowledge of a receiver by trying to buy something that fits their character and failing.(简而言之,要让一份礼物有意义,你得在其中融入一点自己的东西,即便这样做可能存在风险:相比那些完全只考虑收礼人需求而挑选的礼物,这份礼物可能无法那么贴切地满足收礼人的实际需求或喜好。

Jason and his two-year-old daughter walked into a busy airport. The girl wore a bright red hat and smiled as she looked around at the tall windows and long lines of people. The hall was filled with voices, rolling suitcases, and the announcements over loudspeakers. They had come early to make sure they had enough time for their flight.
They reached the check-in counter (柜台) well before their flight. Jason smiled at the agent (工作人员) and placed two small bags on the scale. Jason gently lifted his daughter onto the counter beside his suitcase. The agent asked, “May I have your tickets, please?” The agent scanned his boarding pass, then looked at the girl. “I’m sorry,” she said, in a soft but firm voice, “your daughter needs her own ticket. Our rules say any child over twenty-four months needs a full-price seat.”
Jason blinked (眨眼睛) in surprise. He mistakenly thought his daughter was free because of her age. He looked down at his daughter’s small feet and remembered how he had held her when she was a baby. “But she is only two years old,” Jason said softly. “I did not know she needed a ticket.” The agent shook her head. “I know it is confusing. But our system will not let me continue without the extra ticket.”
Jason took a deep breath and checked his wallet. Inside were a few bills, a credit card, and a hope that he could somehow fix this. He turned to the agent, “I don’t have enough money right now. The ticket costs…?” She tapped the screen. “Seven hundred forty-nine dollars.” He swallowed hard and whispered, “I do not…” He felt his face going red as he stepped back from the counter. He bent down and hugged his daughter close. “Sweetie, I need to make a quick call,” he said. Then he walked away, with phone in hand, his steps slow and heavy.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
While Jason stood a few feet away, a kind-looking woman came to the counter.

The woman smiled and shook her head, saying “You don’t need to repay me.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
While Jason stood a few feet away, a kind-looking woman came to the counter. “I will pay for the ticket,” she said. The agent paused in surprise, then nodded. The woman folded the pass and handed it to the girl. Moments later, Jason returned to the counter. He looked at his daughter’s ticket in her hand. “How did this happen?” The agent pointed to the woman, “This kind lady paid for it.” The father turned to the woman. “Thank you,” he said. “My name is Jason. I want to repay you. May I have your name, please?”
The woman smiled and shook her head, saying “You don’t need to repay me.” “I just wanted to help,” she added. “It was nothing big, really. Enjoy your trip with your daughter.” Before Jason could try again to learn her name or offer his thanks in some other way, she turned around and walked down the line of people waiting to check in. Jason watched her and thought about the stranger’s act of kindness. He felt both grateful and humbled. He looked at his daughter’s red hat and decided to teach her to help others, just as the stranger had helped them.

14. What matters most in gift giving according to the text?

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
While Jason stood a few feet away, a kind-looking woman came to the counter.
