It was a cool October evening in the hill country of southwest Mississippi. Joey Deak and I were there to bow-hunt white-tailed deer, and had set up a rough base camp.
After a dinner of sardines, crackers, cheese, onions and lemonade, we retired to our goose-down sleeping bags 1 (spread) beneath an oak tree. 2 the tune of an occasional plop-plop of falling acorns (橡实), Joey immediately fell asleep. However, I lay awake, trying to ignore my partner's snoring and the screech of a nearby owl. Finally I drifted into a dream about white-tailed deer prancing down a trail.
Suddenly,I was jolted awake. It was 3 I had felt a danger signal deep within me. I lay on my side, one arm folded beneath my head, realizing things were not as they 4 be. Then an icy chill skittered up my spine as something with a rough surface 5 (slide)slowly onto my ankles. My heart jumped and I froze.
Rattlesnake! Flashed across my mind, scaring my thoughts with the old timers’ tales about these deadly reptiles 6 inhabit the hills in Franklin Count- and their sometimes lethal bite.
I lay still and tried to maintain my composure as the snake made its hair-raising way upward. I panted for breath and wondered if l was giving off an odor of fear that might provoke 7 into striking.
I prayed sincerely to God for safety, and asked for forgiveness. Images of my family flashed before my eyes. The crawling, ticklish movement suddenly stopped. The rattler now lay partially lengthwise along my upper legs and buttocks.
Not a muscle twitched as I searched my mind for a way out of the predicament. I had just about decided to catapult myself from the sleeping bag when the snake slowly crawled over my hi and began to coil (盘绕) its full length into the warm confines of my lower stomach, groin and thighs.
No movement was made by either the rattler or me for 8 seemed like an eternity. My mouth was like cotton, and I longed 9 (emit) a long, deep breath. Then waves of goose pimples rippled up my stomach as the snake began to make another move. Oh, God, deliver me, I prayed. I lay frozen, my heart 10 (pound) in my ears.

People at work and in their free time 4 think of creative ways to solve problems.Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to help you.
Making connections. This technique involves taking 5 ideas and trying to find links between them.First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words 6 with candles: light, fire, matches, wax ,night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is to relate the 7 to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original 8 ;you could buy him tickets to match or take him out for the night.

Maybe you can practise skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January.
Be someone else! Look at the situation from a 13 point of view. Good businessmen use this technique in trade, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the 14 in their books. They ask questions: What does this character want? Why can't she get it? What changes must she make to get what she wants? What Makes You Want More and More?
The Diderot effect is perhaps one of the most peculiar aspects of buyer behavior, namely the tendency to consume more and more. It has been named in honor of Denis Diderot, the 18th-century French writer and philosopher.
The effect was first described in Diderot's essay “Regrets on Parting with My Old Dressing Gown.” Here he tells how the gift of a beautiful red gown leads to unexpected results, eventually plunging him into debt.Initially pleased with the gift, Diderot came to regret his new gown. 1 He replaced his old straw chair, for example, with an armchair covered in leather, his formerly beloved prints were replaced with more costly prints, and so on. “T was absolute master of my old dressing gown," Diderot writes, “but I have become a slave to my new one...”
2 Oftentimes people feel the need to surround themselves with goods that match in terms of value.Advertising, media and social environment often push us to buy things that we have not considered buying at all.
This consumer buying behavior is pretty common. A person buys a new car and subsequently(随后)spends a large sum of money on a high-class audio system, Having bought an expensive sofa in the living room,a person starts to notice that the rest of his furniture looks rather old-fashioned compared to the new furnishings. 3
4 Still, in Becoming Minimalist, writer Joshua Becker has a few other suggestions. Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status. Stop trying to impress others with your stuff and start trying to impress them with your life. Remind yourself that possessions do not define you. Abundance (丰裕) of life is not found in the things that you own. Your possessions do not define you or your success - no matter what marketers try to tell you.
A. Buying a man's suit requires appropriate accessories (配饰) to match the look.
B. The Diderot effect today refers to excessive consumerism.
C. The famous French philosopher Denis Diderot lived nearly his entire life in poverty.
D. Compared with his new dressing gown, the rest of his possessions began to seem cheap.
E. Simply being aware of this phenomenon will probably go a long way toward preventing it.
F. The Diderot Effect can also apply to the places we are familiar with, and even the people we know.
