American country music is also known as country western music. It has a very long history. It comes from the folk songs of immigrants (移民) from Britain.
Country music uses simple music and words to express everyday feelings such as loneliness, love, and sadness. That is to say, country music describes life. It talks about friends and enemies, trucks and roads, farms and crops. People in many parts of the world like country music, because everyone can understand what the music is about.
Country western music became popular first among cowboys in the American west countryside. Cowboys had to take care of cows day and night. When they were alone with the cows, they often sang beautiful and peaceful songs to calm the animals and to overcome their own fear. They were not well-educated and so they sang about their daily life in very simple words. They played guitars, violins and other instruments. In the south of America, many people added instruments from their homes, like bottles and spoons. When cowboys visited their friends and families on holidays like Thanksgiving, they usually sang and played country western music.
In recent years, many musicians have made country western music a little different from the one in the past. These changes make the songs sound even better. Today singers such as Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Eddie Rabbitt, LeAnn Rimes, Randy Travis and a group called Alabama are singing and playing in different styles. They have brought country western music more and more fans from all over the world.

Have you ever bought a blind box and opened it with excitement? It is reported that blind boxes are getting more and more popular in the big cities in China.
Blind boxes, or “manghe” in Chinese, are always a collection of figurines (人形的小雕像) sold in the same boxes. The figurines are specially designed based on characters from the cartoons or superheroes in the movies. Each is put randomly (随机地) in a sealed (密封的) box so that the buyers, who do not know what is inside, will have a feeling of surprise and expectation and be willing to buy one after another to get a full set.
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
This is a famous line in an American movie, Forrest Gump (1994). It seems to be the idea of opening the blind boxes, but in fact, they first appeared in Japan and they were invented after the “lucky bags”. The bags were little ones filled with toys or clothes out of fashion. People could get the bag at much lower price than the total price of the things in it. But you couldn’t know what you were buying either.
“Now the blind boxes have taken the young market by storm and you can see blind box stores almost everywhere downtown,” said Victor, a blind box designer. “Office ladies and college students in the cities are buying most of the boxes. Females pay for 62.6 percent of them. They like to buy cute things to decorate (装饰) their desks and opening the boxes is a great way to free themselves from stress.”
“The blind boxes can blind people.” Prof. Lee from a university is studying the new fashion. “The lovers often spend too much collecting all the figurines of a certain set and some of them are crazy about the secret design (隐藏款) and make it far more expensive. It’s really a waste of money and people may get more stressed.”

8. What is a blind box?
A. A box with a figurine in it.
B. A box designed for the blind.
C. A box filled with toys or clothes
9. Where is the blind box from?
A. China. B. The US. C. Japan.
10. What does the underlined part “take...by storm” mean in Paragraph 5?
A. 刮风 B. 摧毁 C. 席卷
11. According to the passage, which of the following would Prof. Lee agree with?
A. Young people need to know more about the blind boxes.
B. Blind box lovers shouldn’t spend too much on “lucky bags”.
C. People can’t always free themselves from stress by opening blind boxes.
