Many people catch a cold in spring and autumn. There are hundreds of kinds of viruses (病毒). You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure (疗法) for each one.
When a virus attacks (攻击) your body, you may work hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to our nose and brings congestion (充血) with it. You feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually “eating” the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a running nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells (细胞). You may feel terrible, but actually, your body is trying to fight against the cold.
Different people have different cures for colds. In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm drinks. Other people take the medicine to stop the fever, congestion, and runny nose.
There is one interesting thing to note—some scientists say taking the medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it or kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own.

If spring is the beginning of life, and summer its youth, then autumn is undoubtedly its middle age. It is a time of self-examination. With the darkness of the night coming earlier and earlier, autumn can fill us with doubts about our future. However, doubts can help us grow. That’s what I like most.
I like to spend time going out alone and exploring the hidden places on the side roads of a city. The other day, I walked along the tree-lined roads in Shanghai. With children busily studying in their classrooms, the roads were calmly quiet. Pushed by the wind, the first fallen leaves of the season could be heard dancing across the sidewalk.
Roads are like life in many ways. We might meet interesting strangers, run into an unusual little shop or at times find ourselves in front of a dead end. Sometimes we might even be forced to take a side road we’ve never been down before. We may feel nervous, but let’s not let our fears control us. Unexpected paths can lead us to our greatest discoveries,
The roads of Shanghai tell about its people and history. The road of your life is no different. This road may be winding (曲折的) and uncertain at times, but you must always trust yourself. Wherever you want to go, remember this: it is always the journey, not the destination (目的地),that makes it worth taking. If you have the time, go out and explore the city. The road of life is waiting for your discovery.
9. Which is probably the writer’s favorite season?
A. Spring. B. Summer. C. Autumn. D. Winter.
10. Why did the roads seem to be quiet?
A. Because the first leaves began to fall.
B. Because a lot of trees were along them.
C. Because no cars were running on them.
D. Because children were studying at school.
11. What can we know about the roads of life?
A. We discover what we expect on them.
B. They are full of uncertain things ahead.
C. We can always take a familiar side road.
D. They surely lead to where we want to go.
12 What’s the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the City to Taste Life B. A Certain Life Goal Matters Most
C. Colorful Life on the City Roads D. The Endless Roads Towards Life
【答案】9. C 10. D 11. B 12. A

When I was a little child, I learnt a lot from my Chinese teacher in primary school. The following is one of the most impressive lessons she gave us.
One day, my Chinese teacher entered our classroom with a big box in her hands. There was a bag of sweets on the box. She then put it on the desk. Immediately, our interest was aroused (唤起) before the lesson.
When the lesson began, she took out five glass bottles from the box and said,“I will divide all of you into five groups. Five members in each group are going to pull all the stones tied with string out of the bottle. The less time you spend, the bigger chance for your group to be rewarded with this bag of sweets.”
When the teacher told us the game began, all of the students hurried to pull their own stone out and no doubt that we all stopped when the stones got to the mouth of the bottle. Some of us tried again but failed, some of us stopped to see what was going on with other groups, some wanted to ask our teacher for help but failed and some stopped for a moment to think.
At last, one of five groups succeeded in pulling the stones out.“How did they make it?”some of us asked. At that time, many of us were surprised and puzzled.
Our teacher gave the winner a sign, “Please do it again.” After seeing their order, we all nodded our heads.
From the game I learnt to cooperate with others. When we have a task, firstly all of us will put forward our own opinions and then choose a better one after some discussion and finally put it into practice. If we have some trouble, we will stop to think and go on.

Scientists find that hard-working people can live longer than idle (不工作的) people. Career women are healthier than housewives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than the job-holder. A report shows that whenever the unemployment rate (失业率) increases by 1%, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point: Work is helpful to our health.
Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from loneliness. Research shows that people feel not only unhappy but also worried when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality. By work, people come into contact with each other. If people take part in some activities, they can find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work sometimes means the loss of everything. It affects man in spirit and makes him easy to get ill.
Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment (充实感). Work makes one feel his value in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are happy beyond words.
From the above we can know that the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study well and live a happy and healthy life.

C We can always take a familiar side road.
D. They surely lead to where we want to go.
12. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the City to Taste Life B. A Certain Life Goal Matters Most
C. Colorful Life on the City Roads D. The Endless Roads Towards Life
D
13. What did the teacher use the sweets as?
A. Teaching tools. B. Experimental materials.
C. Prizes. D. Treats.
14. Why did all groups fail to put the stones out at first?
A. They were too careless.
B. They were too nervous.
C. They never played the game.
D. They were short of cooperation.
15. What is the correct order for the following events?
a. One of the team showed how to pull the stones out successfully.
b. The teacher took out five glass bottles from the box.
c. The students tried to pull the stones out.
d. The teacher put the bag of sweets on the desk.
e. The students were divided into five groups.
A. d-b-e-a-c B. b-d-e-c-a C. d-b-e-c-a D. b-e-d-a-c
16. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To praise his teacher.
B. To show a wonderful lesson.
C. To share his primary school life.
D. To look back upon his childhood.
