The news cycle is driving us to the edge of madness, so why not switch off, unplug and pick up a book? We know you could use a laugh right now — and luckily, several thousands of you told us all about the books, stories and poems that make you laugh.
We took your votes and with the help of our panel (专家小组) of expert judges we created this list of 100 reads designed to make you laugh out loud. Want slice-of-life essays? Loopy poetry? Texts from famous literary figures? Scroll down — we’ve got it all.
As with all our reader polls, this is a curated (精心筹划的) list and not a straight-up popularity contest; unlike last year, you’ll see the books are grouped into categories rather than ranked from one to 100.
And, as always, there are a few things that didn’t make the list — surprisingly, Shakespeare didn’t get enough votes to make it to the semifinals. Then there were books that didn’t quite stand the test of time, or were so new we couldn’t tell whether they’d stand up.
Some of the authors on this list are incredibly popular, and you voted them in over and over again. Because space is limited, we try to hold each author to one spot on the list, but there are some exceptions such as Nora Ephron, who our judges thought was perfect.
And speaking of our judges, you will find a couple of their works on the list this year — we don’t let judges vote for their own works, but readers loved works such as Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting In Real Life, so the panel agreed they should stay.
Laughter is the best medicine. Just click here and start reading!
21. How is the list of this year different from that of last year?
A. More books are included. B. It is made all by readers.
C. It mainly focuses on poetry. D. The listed books are classified.
22. What can we learn about Nora Ephron?
A. She fails to stand the test of time.
B. She is not so popular as other authors.
C. She gets more than one spot on the list.
D. She belongs to the panel of expert judges.
23. Why is We Are Never Meeting In Real Life kept on the list?
A. It is written by a judge. B. It reflects real life.
C. It gets enough readers’ votes. D. It attracts the experts.

The American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once wrote: “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Music is everywhere. But why do we like it so much? One idea is that we quickly learn the patterns of music, and our brains feel rewarded when they can “guess” what will come next. But it may go deeper than that.
Neural resonance (神经共振) theory, or NRT, proposes that, just as our body’s internal clock correspond with the light and dark cycles of the Earth, our brains actually correspond with the pitch and rhythm of music. This may be why we enjoy music so much and why we can dance, keep time with a song, and even compose music. Edward W. Large says this isn’t just an abstract idea. “It’s literally the sound causing a physical resonance in the brain,” he told UConn Today.
Along with other researchers from the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Canada, Large recently explained the principles of NRT. The researchers note, for example, that there’s evidence of our brains continuing to react to musical harmonies even after the sounds have stopped. And scans have shown activity in the brain that correlates with keeping time with music, even if the music doesn’t actually have a regular beat the listener can hear.
According to NRT, this resonance is what makes us want to move and dance and music connects not just to our ears and our brains, but even to our limbs and our spinal cords (脊髓). “This theory suggests that music is powerful not just because we hear it, but because our brains and bodies become it,” said Caroline Palmer, one of the researchers. “That has big implications for medical application, education and technology,” Palmer said.
The researchers say that NRT can give us insight into how the brain and body are connected, how music communicates emotion and how our understanding of the effects of music could be applied to brain health in the future.
24. What might explain why humans enjoy music according to paragraph 1?
A. Its universal popularity. B. Its emotional expression.
C. Brain’s reward from music. D. Longfellow’s famous quote.
25. What do we know about NRT?
A. It shows brain-music link. B. It guides music composition.
C. It is about the day-night cycle. D. It tells us how to listen to music.
26. What might be the future impact of NRT research?
A Boosting advances in technology. B. Improving brain-related conditions.
C. Facilitating research into emotions. D. Helping understand brain structure.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. The universal appeal of music.
B. Benefits brain get from music.
C. A theory clarifying music’s power.
D. The explanation of a universal language.

In a city of wealth, comfort and fine food, there’s a quiet alley (小巷) in London’s Camden where passers-by often take several photos. Sharing space with elegant cafes and world-class bars, a tiny fruit and vegetable stand seems to have been transported from a country road far away. But what makes the stall even more remarkable in the heart of Camden is that payment is on the honor system—customers just throw coins into an old mailbox—and most of the items on offer are priced at £1 in a neighborhood where fresh food usually goes for much, much more.
The greengrocer with a heart of gold—a Chinese immigrant in her 50s who runs this stall alone—is rarely glimpsed by her grateful customers. Lena Wong rises before dawn to prepare to work in her small plot in Enfield, outside London. Depending on the season, she’ll reap onions, eggplant, green peppers, etc. And she works several overnight shifts every week at a nursing home to supplement her and her husband’s modest salaries.
All this started one day as she was selling produce in Enfield, and a young customer said that he barely earned enough to buy food. “I hate the idea of young people walking around hungry,” Lena Wong said. The seed was planted. “I want young people to feel that they’re not forgotten, that they are treasured,” she said. “That not everyone is out for himself. I can make money anytime. Right now, I want to give young people a helping hand.”
Sometimes, when she arrives late in the day, customers get a chance to thank her in person. In return, she’s fond of offering botanical sayings that she collected from a life that has had its share of both joy and pain. “Even in a field full of weeds,” Lena Wong likes to say, “you can grow something— if you put in the effort.”
28. Why is the stall in the quiet alley special?
A. It is located in an expensive cafe.
B. People often take good pictures there.
C. It operates on a trust and credit system.
D. The goods sold there come from distant places.
29. What can we learn about Lena Wong’s job?
A. It requires her to work long hours. B. It pays well to support her family.
C. It attracts widespread media attention. D. It focuses on organic produce.
30. Who inspired Lena Wong to help others?
A. Her grateful customers. B. A hungry youth.
C. Her modest husband. D. Some young people.
31. Which of the following best describes Lena Wong according to the text?
A. Kind-hearted. B. Well-educated.
C. Job-centered. D. Strong-willed.

Do you know what percentage of your family’s total expenses is spent on food? This is the main focus of the Engel coefficient (恩格尔系数), an economic concept that describes the relationship between income and spending on food. For years, it has been considered an important measure of people’s living standards. If the figure is high, then it is often believed that the standard of living is low, as a large share of income is spent on food.
However, recently a topic has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms, where many people have begun to question whether the Engel coefficient is relevant in China.
One of the key reasons for this concern comes from the Chinese attitude toward food, shown by the old saying, “Food is of primary importance to the people.” This highlights the significant difference between China’s food culture and consumption habits and those of Western countries. The food culture in China is rich and diverse, and people are willing to spend more money and energy on it.
“In the past, I earned 100 yuan a day and spent half of it on food. Now I earn 1,000 yuan a day, and I still spend half of it on food. Having a good meal makes my day,” a user from Hunan commented on Sina Weibo.
Food in China is a science, a social activity and an art. The principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are employed all over China to create healthy, well-balanced meals. Whether in a restaurant or at someone’s home, food is often the common ground over which people gather to talk and share.
Many aspects of Chinese spiritual culture are connected to food, from governance to communication. Chinese traditional culture focuses on seeing society and life from the perspective of food, and Chinese people are very good at enjoying the beauty and meaning found in everyday meals.
These factors make consumption habits in China different from those in other countries, making the Engel coefficient not able to completely reflect the living standards of Chinese people. Moreover, this public concern shows just how deeply food is valued in Chinese society, reported Guangming Daily.
32. Which of the following Engel coefficient figures suggests a high living standard?
A. 63.9%. B. 42.2%. C. 36.3%. D. 29.8%.
33. How does the author mainly illustrate irrelevance of the Engel coefficient in China?
A. By presenting data. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing reasons. D. By citing quotes.
34. What do the underlined words “this concern” in the third paragraph refer to?
A. Whether the Engel coefficient is relevant in China.
B. Whether Chinese people are willing to spend more on food.
C. Whether consumption habits are different in China.
D. Whether the principles of TCM are suitable for food.
35. What does this text mainly talk about?
A. Beating the economic rule.
B. The importance of food in China.
C. The consumption habits in China.
D. Improving the Chinese living standards.

Devin had a strong competitive spirit since childhood and always felt alive on the basketball court. His sister Mia had seen him win many times. But life took a turn when Mia was diagnosed with cancer. The family focused on taking care of her, and Devin spent most of his free time by her side, missing a lot of school basketball training.
Still, he got the chance to enter the annual three-point contest. He was eager to participate, mainly wanting to let Mia get out of the hospital for a few hours.
On the day of the contest at the community center, Devin was nervous. The rules were straightforward: five shooting spots with three shots each. Starting from the left corner, he rushed his first shot and missed. The second and third shots also didn’t go in. The audience sighed. Moving to the next spots, his rhythm was off, and by the fourth station, he’d missed nine shots continuously. The scoreboard showed “0”, and he could hear the audience laughing.
He looked at the sidelines where Mia, pale from recent chemotherapy (化疗) but determined, sat in a wheelchair. She’d insisted on coming and shouted, “You’ve got this, Devin!”
Devin took a deep breath. At the final spot, he focused, bent his knees, and shot. Score! The second shot also went in. But the last shot bounced off the rim (篮筐). He didn’t win as the defending champion had already won.
As Devin left the court, Mia wheeled over with tears in her eyes. “You didn’t give up,” she said softly. Devin hugged her and whispered, “Neither did you.” Kneeling beside her, he said sadly, “But I didn’t make it.” Mia shook her head. “You tried. That’s what counts.” Devin managed a smile, but he wasn’t sure if there’d be a next time.

D 22. C 23. C

A. Boosting advances in technology. B. Improving brain-related conditions.
C. Facilitating research into emotions. D. Helping understand brain structure.
27 What is the text mainly about?

C 29. A 30. B 31. A

D 33. C 34. A 35. A

以及第六段中的“Many aspects of Chinese spiritual culture are connected to food, from governance to communication. Chinese traditional culture focuses on seeing society and life from the perspective of food, and Chinese people are very good at enjoying the beauty and meaning found in everyday meals.
根据第二段中的“However, recently a topic has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms, where many people have begun to question whether the Engel coefficient is relevant in China. (然而,最近一个话题在中国社交媒体平台上走红,许多人开始质疑恩格尔系数在中国是否适用。)”以及第三段中的“One of the key reasons for this concern comes from the Chinese attitude toward food, shown by the old saying, “Food is of primary importance to the people.” (这种担忧的一个关键原因来自中国人对食物的态度,俗话说‘民以食为天’就体现了这一点。)”可知,“this concern”指代前文提到的“许多人质疑恩格尔系数在中国是否适用”这一情况。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“These factors make consumption habits in China different from those in other countries, making the Engel coefficient not able to completely reflect the living standards of Chinese people. Moreover, this public concern shows just how deeply food is valued in Chinese society, reported Guangming Daily.(这些因素使得中国的消费习惯与其他国家存在差异,进而导致恩格尔系数无法完全反映中国人民的生活水平。此外,《光明日报》报道称,这种公众关切恰恰体现出食品在中国社会受到何等高度的重视。)”以及上文对这些因素的介绍可知,恩格尔系数这一传统经济规则在中国的应用受到了挑战,由此可知,“突破经济规则”能概括文章核心。故选A项。

根据后文“Every team member needs a shared understanding of the project’s objectives and their specific responsibilities. This prevents misunderstandings and ensures accountability. Ambiguity in roles often leads to repeated efforts, overlooked tasks, and frustration. Clearly outlining expectations from the outset sets the stage for productive work.(每个团队成员都需要对项目的目标以及各自的具体职责达成共识。这可以避免误解,并确保责任明确。角色职责的模糊不清往往会导致重复工作、遗漏任务以及产生不满情绪。从一开始就清晰地明确期望,能够为高效的工作奠定基础)”可知,后文详细讨论了角色模糊会导致重复劳动、任务遗漏等问题,强调从开始就明确期望。选项A“明确设定目标和职责”作为小标题完美引入该部分。故选A。
根据上文“Create an environment where team members feel safe to share ideas, ask questions, and voice concerns without fear of judgment.(营造一种氛围,让团队成员能够放心地分享想法、提出问题和表达担忧,同时不必担心受到批评)”以及后文“Actively listening to understand different viewpoints, rather than just waiting to speak, is crucial for building trust and finding the best solutions.(积极倾听以理解不同观点,而非仅仅等待发言,这对于建立信任以及找到最佳解决方案至关重要)”可知,本句是在强调沟通的作用。
根据后文“New conflicts as opportunities to explore different perspectives and improve outcomes. The goal should be to understand the root cause and find a mutually acceptable resolution. Focusing on the issue at hand, not personal attacks, and seeking common ground helps the team move forward positively.(新的冲突其实也是探索不同观点、改善结果的机会。
根据前文“Recognize that each member brings unique skills, experiences, and perspectives to the table.(要认识到每位成员都具备独特的技能、丰富的经验和独特的见解)”以及后文“Assigning tasks based on individual strengths not only improves efficiency but also increases engagement and satisfaction.(根据个人优势分配任务不仅能提高效率,还能增强参与度和满意度)”可知,本句是前文的自然延伸,解释了如何将“差异”转化为行动,从而引出后文的“任务分配”。
根据前文“Constructive feedback, both on the work and the process, should be encouraged.(应当鼓励对工作内容以及工作过程都给予建设性的反馈)”可知,本句解释定期反馈的好处,代词“This”指代前文的“feedback loops”(反馈循环),并总结该策略的价值。

I am writing to share my thoughts regarding the upcoming Problem-Solving Workshop. This initiative is truly commendable as it will provide students with valuable support in addressing both academic and personal challenges.
To make the workshop more effective, I would like to suggest implementing a peer mentoring system where experienced senior students can guide their juniors. Additionally, organizing regular theme-based sessions focusing on common student concerns such as exam stress or time management would be highly beneficial. To encourage wider participation, we could also introduce an anonymous problem submission box to help shy students voice their concerns comfortably.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next day at school, Devin noticed a flyer (传单) for a charity basketball event.

Weeks later, as Devin and Mia stood on the same court, the crowd’s cheers felt different.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day at school, Devin noticed a flyer (传单) for a charity basketball event. “Hoops for Hope” would fund children’s cancer treatment. Devin immediately signed up. From that day on, he practiced tirelessly. Mia, whose chemotherapy sessions were finally showing progress, would watch from her wheelchair, counting each successful shot. “Ten in a row today!” she’d say, her voice growing stronger each week. Gradually, his shots became precise arrows piercing the net. Each swish echoed their silent vow: never give up.
Weeks later, as Devin and Mia stood on the same court, the crowd’s cheers felt different. Mia, now able to stand independently, waved excitedly as Devin took the final shot. Time seemed to freeze as it sailed and circled the rim — then dropped through the net. The buzzer sounded; they’d won! Devin rushed to Mia, placing the winner’s medal around her neck. Tears glistened as she whispered, “This is our victory.” The crowd burst into deafening cheers, not just for the winning shot, but for the strong spirit of two fighters who turned despair into hope.
