Simon took as much time as he could pulling on his snow trousers and boots, zipping up his jacket, and finding his helmet and gloves. His brother Gabe paced the front hall. “Let’s go!”
The brothers walked to the park, the sleds (雪橇) bouncing against their snow pants. Swish, swish, swish. Simon could see the sledding hill ahead of them. To him, it looked more like a sledding mountain. It was so high that the park district had built wooden steps into the slope to help sledders climb back up. Kids were taking turns on sleds, screaming all the way down. Simon couldn’t tell if their cries meant they were happy or terrified. Yet he knew which one he felt.
Gabe was taking the steps two at a time. “Come on!” he called to Simon. Simon stared up. He was both sweating and freezing, his stomach knotted like a pretzel. Should he turn back? But the line of kids on the steps behind him meant he had to keep climbing.
At the top his brother stopped and looked at Simon. “Do you want me to go down with you?” he asked. Knowing Gabe wanted to fly down the sledding hill without his little brother, Simon took a deep breath. “I’m going. By myself.”
“Good for you, Simon,” Gabe said.
Simon sat crossed-legged on the sled and gripped (紧握) the plastic handles on each side. His heart was doing leapfrogs. Gabe gave him a small nudge on his back. Suddenly, he was dashing down the hill like a wild penguin. The wind whooshed. The cold stung. He had the handles in a death grip when the sled swung around and sent him flying down the hill backward. BACKWARD! He couldn’t stop. Faster and faster he went. He couldn’t even scream. Was he going to crash? Why had he thought this was a good idea?
The ground leveled off, and Simon’s sled slowed and then came to a stop at last. He rolled out and lay on his back, breathing hard.
“Are you all right?” Gabe asked.
Simon sat up slowly and looked around.
“Simon, say something! Say something!” Gabe said.
Simon grinned, “Again?”
4. How did Simon feel before leaving for the park?
A. Excited and confident. B. Hesitant and unwilling.
C. Eager and amazed. D. Shocked and depressed.
5. Why did Simon decide to keep climbing the steps despite his fears?
A. Because Gabe was pushing him to do so.
B. Because he didn’t want to disappoint his brother.
C. Because other kids were waiting behind him.
D. Because the view from the top was too inviting.
6. What happened to Simon when he was sledding down the hill?
A. He lost control and flew backward.
B. He skillfully made a perfect turn.
C. He crashed into the ground and got injured.
D. He enjoyed a smooth ride down.
7. What can be inferred about Simon’s attitude at the end of the story?
A. He was regretful and didn’t want to sled again.
B. He was relieved and grateful to be safe.
C. He was eager to sled a second time at once.
D. He felt it unworthy to take the risk.

Step aside, blue collar. And white collar, pink collar and green collar. There’s a new collar in town. “New collar” jobs are those that require advanced skills but not necessarily advanced degrees, especially in emerging high-tech fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity (网络安全), electric vehicles and robotics.
There are real fears that workers will lose jobs to technology, especially artificial intelligence, in the coming years. But “new collar” optimists think in a more positive way: There are also real opportunities ahead for skilled workers who know how to handle machines.
“Somebody has to program, monitor and maintain those robots,” said Sarah Boisvert, the founder of the New-Collar Network.
Even if millions of high-tech jobs are created in the coming years, the impact on workers who lose jobs may be significant. For many Americans without four-year college degrees, according to census (人口普查) data, the new job market will require training.
Ginni Rometty, a former chief executive of IBM, is believed to have created a “new collar” in 2016. At the time, she said, IBM was having trouble filling cybersecurity jobs, partly because outdated criteria required that candidates have college degrees.
“Due to our high qualifications in these online jobs we overlooked a large number of qualified and available candidates,” she wrote in an email. “Unless millions of people are trained in the skills employers need now,” she added, “they risk being unemployed even as millions of good-paying jobs go unfilled.”
Christopher M. Cox, a researcher who has written about the new-collar economy, said, “The alternative model of four-year universities is really great.” However, he added that “new collar” may also be a clever term that relieves the anxiety of workers by defining the constantly changing labor market and technology companies as more ideal rather than “terminators (终结者).”
8. What does “new collar” mean?
A. People engaged in cybersecurity.
B. People working at electric vehicles.
C. People closely connected with artificial intelligence.
D. People with advanced skills regardless of degrees.
9. What made IBM’s cybersecurity jobs unfilled?
A. Much stress. B. Low salaries.
C. High qualifications. D. Few candidates.
10. What is the benefit of the “new collar” economy to the society?
A. It gives more opportunities to the workers.
B. It helps artificial intelligence develop better.
C. It rebuilds the confidence of the white collar.
D. It changes the system of technology companies.
11 What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain the anxiety of workers. B. To state the electric vehicle industry.
C. To emphasise the college education. D. To introduce the new-collar phenomenon.
D
While concerns about “digital dementia” — the potential for technology to harm memory and thinking skills — have grown, new research suggests smart phones and computers might actually help protect older adults’ cognitive health, the ability to think clearly, learn effectively, remember information and make decisions, all of which are essential for maintaining independence and overall mental well-being.
A comprehensive review of 57 studies involving over 411,000 adults, whose average age was sixty-eight, revealed surprising findings. Older individuals who regularly used digital devices showed a 42% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to non-users. The research examined various technologies including smart phones, computers, social media, and email.
Scientists propose several explanations for this protective effect. First, technology use, like texting, browsing, video calls, activates multiple brain regions, strengthening neural connections as crossword puzzles do. Second, digital tools help maintain social connections, fighting loneliness known to negatively impact cognitive health. “Technology engagement appears to offer both mental exercise and social benefits,” noted Dr. Helen Zhou, the study’s lead author.
However, the study didn’t analyze specific usage patterns or duration. Additionally, since participants adopted technology later in life, results may differ for lifelong users. “Further comprehensive studies are required to establish the most effective ways of using digital tools for preserving cognitive function,” scientists cautioned.
With approximately 10 million new dementia cases annually worldwide according to data from WHO, these findings open promising avenues for prevention. In Japan, retirement homes using tablet-based memory games report 30% slower cognitive decline. While not definitive, they challenge assumptions about technology’s universal harm to aging minds and highlight its potential as a tool for maintaining cognitive vitality in older populations.
12. Which factor contributes to the cognitive benefits that digital devices bring to the elderly?
A. Improved dietary habits. B. Enhanced social connectivity.
C. Increased physical activity. D. Better sleep quality.
13. What limitation of the study is highlighted by the researchers?
A. The study focused mainly on younger adults.
B. The sample size was too small to draw conclusions.
C. The study included only lifelong technology users.
D. It did not analyze specific usage patterns or duration.
14. What does the underlined word “avenues” refer to?
A. Physical pathways. B. Research methods.
C Potential approaches. D. Technological devices.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Digital Dementia Risks Outweigh Benefits
B. Study: Tech Use May Protect Elderly Brains
C. Social Media Harms Elderly Cognition
D. Exercise Better Than Tech for Brain Health

As the mother of an eleven-year-old girl, I have read several books that tell parents how to bring up a girl to be beautiful, elegant, confident, and rich. However, I have always believed that girls need to be brave above all else, but this is easier said than done.
I still remember I couldn’t see the screen directly when my daughter switched to the animal channel, which was broadcasting a show about snakes. I stood as far away from the TV as possible, too scared to open my eyes. However, my little angel was not scared of the snakes. In fact, she watched the show with a keen interest. I was relieved that my daughter didn’t get too many genetic phobias(遗传恐惧症). Even to this day, she is still obsessed with challenging herself with new things.
This year, I got a chance to study in Singapore for six months. After the novelty of the first few days had gone, I found myself missing my family. With the summer vacation approaching, my husband agreed to make good use of the fact that I was staying in Singapore. He brought our daughter out to visit me and to enjoy the new experience in a new country.
The reunion day finally came. My husband and my daughter arrived in the second week of July. I was so looking forward to seeing them. I had made many preparations for their visit. On the first day, I arranged for us to see Gardens by the Bay. When we walked out of the MRT station, we were amazed by the sight of the Super Trees. When my daughter saw lots of people walking on the Skyway, she couldn’t help shouting excitedly that she wanted to have a try. The Skyway is a 22-meter-high suspension bridge from which you can enjoy a birds eye view. Last time I came here with my friends, I firmly rejected their repeated attempts to challenge me to go up there. It was like the day with the snakes all over again. But could I really reject my little angel?
Paragraph 1:
My daughter was waiting for my reply. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

C Because other kids were waiting behind him.

“Due to our high qualifications in these online jobs, we overlooked a large number of qualified and available candidates,” she wrote in an email.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain the anxiety of workers. B. To state the electric vehicle industry.
C. To emphasise the college education. D. To introduce the new-collar phenomenon.
D 9. C 10. A 11.

C. Potential approaches. D. Technological devices.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Digital Dementia Risks Outweigh Benefits
B. Study: Tech Use May Protect Elderly Brains
C. Social Media Harms Elderly Cognition
D. Exercise Better Than Tech for Brain Health
B 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据最后一段划线词所在句“With approximately 10 million new dementia cases annually worldwide according to data from WHO, these findings open promising avenues for prevention. (根据世界卫生组织的数据,全球每年约有1000万新增痴呆病例,这些发现为预防痴呆症开辟了有希望的avenues。)”可知,每年新增大量痴呆病例,而研究发现数字设备可能有助于保护老年人认知健康,所以这些发现为预防痴呆症开辟了有希望的方法或途径,“avenues”意为“潜在的方法或途径”,与C项“Potential approaches (潜在的方法)”意思相近。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。纵览全文,尤其是根据第一段“While concerns about “digital dementia” — the potential for technology to harm memory and thinking skills — have grown, new research suggests smart phones and computers might actually help protect older adults’ cognitive health, the ability to think clearly, learn effectively, remember information and make decisions, all of which are essential for maintaining independence and overall mental well-being.

Possible version one:
My daughter was waiting for my reply. I was secretly very worried. But my daughter kept begging me and I could not bear to reject her. Bravery was the most significant quality that I wanted her to possess. Her curiosity was so strong that I couldn’t resist. I nodded slightly, and my daughter’s frowning face slowly broke into a smile. My response surprised my husband, who reacted with the wildest excitement as we walked towards the Skyway. When I stepped on it, I found myself horrified by the height. I grabbed the railing, almost unable to move.
Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. My heart beat wildly, casting scared glances down the bridge. My husband and daughter held my hands tightly. I walked as though I were drunk. But their firm gaze built up my confidence and we kept going together. “Mom, look, it’s so beautiful.” What I saw there filled my soul with joy. The bay spread out far below me. Beyond it stood the tall and beautiful skyscrapers. I looked down at my little girl who taught her mother how to be brave, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Possible version two:
My daughter was waiting for my reply. I looked at her, then at the Skyway. I felt my heart threatening to burst out from my chest. My husband, who was used to this kind of situation and understood how scared I was, consoled me. He said he could go with our little girl instead. But my daughter wouldn’t give up easily and shouted out her own encouragement. I plucked up my courage and took my first step onto the suspension bridge, then another, I inched forward, all the way holding on tight to the handrail.
Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. I stood there, and my legs trembled despite my fruitless attempt to stay calm. Below the bridge, the treetops formed an ocean of green waves that threatened to devour me. Just then, I heard a familiar voice, and two little hands slipped into my arm. Looking down, I saw my little angel’s bright smile, encouraging me to finish the walk. Eventually, we reached the end together. My husband was surprised at my nerve, but I knew the reason I had felt so brave was for my little girl.
如:could not bear to do sth.,burst out, pluck up等高级词汇;Bravery was the most significant quality that I wanted her to possess. Her curiosity was so strong that I couldn’t resist. 中so...that... My husband, who was used to this kind of situation and understood how scared I was, consoled me.
