There are many good online universities available. If you are considering this option for getting your degree, don’t forget to check out this gem. Rather than give the standard sales pitch, I will list the top reasons that I chose Western Governor’s University for my master’s degree.
Lower tuition
The tuition is lower than comparable online schools. Each term is six months long, giving me more time to complete the requirements for the term. In addition, if I finish early and still have time left in my term, I can do a part-time job to earn enough money for the schooling. I find this option to be very cost-effective.
Flexible courses
If I have learned enough either through life experience, on the job training, or in class, I can take the exam and skip the course. For example, I learned a great deal about special education law from working in the field attended conferences, and took classes for my second bachelor’s degree. I was able to take the test, and pass, thus finishing the class quickly and focusing on other areas where I needed more studying time.
Personal support
I have a mentor (导师) assigned to me. My mentor is my contact person for questions and support. I get calls on a regular basis. We talk about where I am in my studies, what my next steps are, and any question I may have. I also have the online communities where I can go on the discussion with my schoolmates when I have questions.
Respected degree
I checked with the State Office of Education to find out if this was a good way to go. I learned that a degree from Western Governor’s University was a respected degree that is considered comparable to a degree from a traditional brick and mortar (灰泥) university.
I am nearly finished with my degree from Western Governor’s University. I gain confidence in my abilities, and am very happy with my decision.

I still remember the days when I was a youthful student in an engineering school. I lived a casual life, without caring about the future. I smoked, drank with friends and made girlfriends. Little did I realized that casualness would certainly lead to loss.
Two years had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted FAIL in more than half the subjects. I didn’t care, at least not till my dad found out about it. You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me.
Then came the day when my dad found out my habit of smoking. He lost his temper but he just told me, “son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on.” It hit me like a roundhouse kick from Bruce Lee. I was jolted (震摇) out of my bones! I couldn’t comprehend how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college. I owed everybody money: the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, my friends, ect. I was living a life filled with credit.
When I came back to college, I knew if I didn’t change the way I live my life I wouldn’t be able to pay everybody off. So I decided to make some changes, drastic changes. I quitted smoking, cut off from my friends who led me down the wrong road, starting hanging out in libraries and reading my engineering books.
One year later, I went from a miserable failure to a magna cum laude (优等成绩). Life was never the same again. This incident made me know that anything is possible if you take action and do something about it, however small or large. Even today it still motivates me when I feel that I’m about to lose or give up. It reminds me that I can do it!

An AI from Google DeepMind has achieved a silver medal score at this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the first time any Al has made it to the podium (领奖台).
The IMO is considered the world’s most famous competition for young mathematicians. In January, Google DeepMind demonstrated AlphaGeometry, an AI system that could answer some IMO geometry questions as well as humans. However, this was not from a live competition, and it couldn’t answer questions from other mathematical disciplines.
Google DeepMind has now released a new AI, called AlphaProof, which can solve a wider range of mathematical problems. It is an improved version of AlphaGeometry that can solve more geometry questions.
When the team tested both systems together on this year’s IMO questions’ they answered four out of six questions correctly, giving them a score of 28 out of a possible 42 points. This was enough to win a silver medal and just one point under this year’s gold medal threshold (门槛). At the contest in Bath, UK, 58 competitors won a gold medal and 123 won a silver medal.
“We are all very much aware that AI will eventually be better than humans at solving most mathematical problems, but the rate at which AI is improving is breathtaking,” says Gregor Dolinar, the IMO president. “Missing the gold medal at IMO 2024 by just one point a few days ago is truly impressive.”
While AlphaProof’s performance is impressive, it works slowly, taking up to three days to find some solutions instead of the 4.5 hours per three questions that competitors are allowed. It also failed to answer both questions on combinatorics, which is the study of counting and arranging numbers. “We are still working to understand why this is, which will hopefully lead us to improve the system,” says Alex Davies at Google DeepMind.
46. What do we know about AlphaProof in paragraph 3?
A. Its all functions. B. Its potential clients.
C. Its advantages over AlphaGeometry. D. Its abilities to analyse problems.
47. What can be learned about this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad?
A. It took place in Bath, UK.
B. There were 10 questions in the contest.
C. 181 competitors took part in the contest.
D. This year’s gold medal threshold was 30 points.
48. What is one of the limitations of AlphaProof?
A. It can only solve geometry-related problems.
B. It is much slower than human competitors in answering questions.
C. It has difficulty in understanding the basic concepts of mathematics.
D. It requires a large amount of computing resources to function
49. What may be Alex Davies’ attitude to the development of AlphaProof?
A. Neutral. B. Uncaring. C. Disapproving. D. Positive.
50. What’s the best title of the text?
A. DeepMind AI Gets Silver Medal at IMO 2024
B. DeepMind AI Is Developed to Take Part in IMO 2024
C. AI Manages to Solve Difficult Mathematical Problems Well

Psychology Today explains that body language includes the way that humans send unspoken signals to one another. Posture, hand gestures, and even the tiniest facial expressions are understood by people who might not even realize that they are seeing them.
A person’s facial expressions can warn others about danger. For example, say someone opens a refrigerator and takes a large mouthful of soured milk. A twisted (扭曲的) expression and wide eyes directly send the message, “Leave this alone!” thus sparing others the sorry experience of trying the milk for themselves.
Some human signals are naturally understood. Imagine you look out your window and observe a passerby hurrying along the sidewalk with his arms wrapped around himself. Your first reaction would undoubtedly be, “It’s cold and windy outside.”
In a one-on-one conversation, a person with their arms crossed sends an unspoken signal that they are protecting their personal space. That person might, however, simply be tired or cold.
Brain researchers explain that feelings happen before our thoughts. The time between them is very short, but that’s long enough for an observant human to sense the hunger, anger, impatience or happiness of another person directly.
Humans are experts at quickly understanding another person’s attitude, and they do it before a single sentence is spoken. People naturally make eye contact when meeting another human. Even though some adults have learned to generally control basic facial features, the eyes tell us much. When a person looks into the eyes of someone they admire, their pupils (瞳孔) may widen, the same as when they see an object that they want very much.
Body language creates an impression on anyone and everyone you meet. To make a positive impression, smile when you meet someone. Body language isn’t mind-reading nor does it give insight into what another person is thinking. When reading people carefully, body language helps you understand what another person wants or plans to do.
51. Which of the following is NOT body language?
A. Hand gestures. B. Posture. C. Tone. D. Facial expressions.
52. What do we know from Paragraphs 2 through 4?
A. Body language communicates people’s discomfort.
B. Body language expresses what people can’t say.
C. People often use the same body language to show their feelings.
D. People make mistakes when understanding others’ body language.
53. How can we leave others with a good impression according to the author?
A. By observing others carefully. B. By looking at others’ eyes naturally.
C. By expressing our thoughts directly. D. By making a friendly expression.
54. How does the passage mainly develop?
A. By making comparisons. B. By providing examples.
C. By presenting research findings. D. By following the order of importance.
55. What is the best title for the text?

C. Use body language well D. The art of communication

Last August I took part in the Summer Camp of the General Final Contest of the 16th National Creative English Contest held in Beijing. It was one of the most meaningful thing I did in my Senior 2 summer vacation.
The summer camp lasted from August 20 to August 27. During the opening ceremony, we each wrote a postcard to motivate ourselves. On my card I wrote, “Brace yourself and show your best,” These words supported me throughout every obstacle I experienced.
August 24 witnessed the important debate contest that many of us feared. The night before, my teammates and I sat in a circle, focusing our minds on the debate topic, “Does competition among friends adversely influence their friendships?”
All of us were busy searching for examples of Olympic athletes or other real-life people to back up our arguments. Time seemed to disappear faster than usual while we were working on this project.
Finally, the big day arrived. Only one minute before we went on the stage, an inner voice entered my mind, saying, “Brace yourself and show your best. ” Preparing the details in my head allowed me to feel ready for the challenge. With my teammates backing me up, I drew myself up to full height and expressed my point of view as best as I could.
The results of the contest convinced me that my motto paid off—I entered the top 50, and two of my teammates placed in the top 10 due to their excellent performance. And through the strength of our teamwork, my friends and I became closer than ever. The more competition among friends, the firmer our friendship will be.
From those eight days, it isn’t the prize I valued the most but the breakthrough and the pure friendship I gained. It would be better to change my motor into “Brace yourself and fight together.” I firmly hold the belief that this period of time will live in my memory forever and will shine even brighter when I look back.
