Lesson 25: Let’s Do an Experiment!
一、Teaching Objectives
Language Competence
Students can master new words, understand and retell the experiment process described in the text.
Cultural Awareness
Students understand the importance of scientific methods in exploring natural phenomena.
Thinking Quality
1.Students can develop critical thinking by guessing and verifying the experiment result.
2.Students can learn to draw conclusions based on experimental evidence.
Learning Ability
1.Students can improve their reading and listening skills through the dialogue.
2.Students can work in groups to conduct simple experiments and communicate in English.
二、Teaching Key and Difficult Points
Key Points
1.Mastery of new vocabulary and key sentence structures.
2.Understanding the experiment process and the scientific principle of air pressure.
Difficult Points
1.Explaining the scientific principle of air pressure in simple English.
2.Using correct sentence structures to express experimental conclusions.
三、Teaching Methods
Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT)
Cooperative Learning
Audio-visual Method
四、Teaching Aids
Multimodal teaching aids (PPT, video clips of the experiment)
五、Teaching Procedures
Step1. Warming-up
- Greeting
- Greet students and ask:
What’s your favorite subject?
Do you like science?
What experiments have you done in science class?
- Lead-in
- Show a picture of a jar filled with water and covered with cardboard. Ask: “If I turn the jar upside down, what will happen? Let’s learn today’s lesson to find out.”
Step2. Presentation
- New Words Learning
- Present new words and simple definitions.
experiment n.实验(Cn.) v.做实验
correctly adv .正确地→ correct v .改正;纠正
method n .方法;办法→ teaching method 教学方法→ scientific method 科学方法
force n .力量 v .迫使;强迫→ force sb . to do sth .强迫某人做某事= force sb . into doing sth .强迫某人做某事→ the forces of nature 大自然的力量
turn ... upside down 把……翻转;倒过来5. pour out 涌出
take… off 把……拿开
fill .. with ….把……装满……→ be filled with被……填满/装满
- Let students read and spell the words, then do a quick word-matching exercise.
- Do a fill-in-the-blank exercise:
We did an ______ to test the ______ about air ______. We used a ______ and a piece of ______. Finally, we ______ that air is very strong.
Step3 Reading
- Play the audio of the dialogue. Ask students to listen and answer:
Who are in the lab?
What experiment do they do?
- Let students read the dialogue in groups, then invite some groups to read parts of the dialogue.
Step4 Practice
- Let students practice using “I think...”, “I don’t think so.” to express their opinions about a simple daily phenomenon (e.g., “Will the plant grow well without water?”).
- Ask students to summarize the experiment process using
First/Firstly, fill...with...
Next/Secondly, cover...with... and hold ...
Then/Thirdly, turn...upside down
Lastly/Finally, take...off
Step5. Production
Group Experiment
- Divide students into groups. Provide each group with a jar, water, and cardboard. Let them conduct the experiment in the text. Ask them to describe the process and result in English.
Conclusion Sharing
- Each group shares their experiment conclusion using “We have discovered that...”, “I conclude that...”.
Step6. Summary and Homework
Summary
Homework
- Write a short passage about the experiment they did in class, using the new words and sentence structures.
- Find another simple science experiment and try to explain it in English.
六、Blackboard Design
Lesson 25: Let’s Do an Experiment!
New Words: experiment, jar, cardboard, theory, scientific, method, pressure, conclude
Key Sentences:
I think... / I don’t think so.
We have discovered that...
I conclude that...
Scientific Principle: Air pressure holds the water in the jar.
