Passage 1
Animals can be great fun, but it’s important to know how to be safe when you’ re with them. Both outdoor animals and indoor animals need to be treated kindly all the time. This means different things depending on the animal and the situation.
When it comes to outdoor animals, the rule is simple: don’t touch or go near them. Although some of these animals may look cool or even cute, leave them alone. These animals aren’t like regular pets. They’ re not used to being around people and may attack if you come near them. Don’t ever try to feed a wild animal. Bird feeders are OK, but other animals, even if they look hungry, shouldn’t even be fed.
When it comes to indoor animals, there are many things you can do to make sure you’ re safe when with your pets. For example, never bother a pet when it’s eating or sleeping. Don’t take a toy or bone away from a cat or dog or hold it out of reach of the animal. Never try to get near a pet with its babies. Animal mothers are very protective and will bite to keep you away. Never stick your bare hand into a fish tank (鱼缸) — some fish can hurt you if they get upset, and also the water contains germs (细菌) that could be harmful. If a pet is sick or injured, stay far away or it may get very upset and even bite when it’s feeling ill.

Passage 1
In the workplace, at home, in all areas of life, looking for a reason to laugh is necessary. A sense of humor helps us to get through the dull times, enjoy the good times.
Six-year-old Hannah encountered one of the most frightening times of her life when she discovered she had cancer. And if she were to give life a chance Hannah would have to put up with painful, almost endless medical treatments. At one point she lost all her hair. On days when she felt strong enough to get out, she often covered her head.
One day while shopping with her mother, Hannah donned a ball ca p with a small ponytail (马尾辫). Unless one looked closely, she looked as if she had a full head of hair. Before long Hannah noticed a small boy staring at her as if he were trying to figure out what was slightly off about the girl. She tried to ignore him, but he followed her around the store. Finally, she took off her ca p showing her shiny, hairless, head. In a firm voice she warned, “This is what happens when you don’t eat your vegetables!”
I don’t know what became of the boy. As for Hannah, her sense of humor helped get her through one of life’s hard times.
As entertainer Bob Hope once said, “I’ve seen what a good laugh can do. It can transform tears into hope.” And sometimes, a little more hope is all we need.

Passage 1
My name is Bill Gates(比尔盖茨). Now I’d like to tell you about an unforgettable teacher of mine. Her name is Mrs Caffiere who deserves(值得) big credit for helping me become the man I am today.
When I first met Mrs. Caffiere, she was a charming school librarian at Seattle’s View Ridge Primary School. I was a shy fourth grader who was desperately trying to go unnoticed because of some problems such as terrible handwriting and an untidy desk. Also, I tried to hide my love for reading - something that was cool for girls but not for boys.
Mrs. Caffiere took me under her wing and helped make it okay for me to be a messy and nerdy boy who read lots of books. She tried to encourage me by sharing her favorite books. It worked. As time went by, I was no longer as shy as before. She found me a lot of books, and she would spend time discussing them with me after I read them.
Teachers generally don’t want to burden their students with extra reading beyond the homework they’ve assigned. But I learned from Mrs. Caffiere that my teachers had so much more knowledge to share and I just needed to ask. Throughout high school and beyond, I would often ask my teachers about the books they liked, read those books when I had some free time, and offer my thoughts.
Looking back on it now, there’s no doubt that my time with Mrs. Caffiere helped develop my interest in libraries and my focus on helping every child in America get the benefit of great teachers. I am grateful to the thoughtful librarian and teacher who helped me find my strengths when I was nine years old. It’s remarkable how much power one good person can have to shape the life of a child.

Passage 2
When I was in my second year in senior high school, I found a 16-dollar-an-hour part-time job at Lakewood Pizza. Like many teens, I longed to earn income as well as add experience for the time to enter the workforce. Just one week after I worked there, David Ross, the manager called me into his office. As the saying goes, “life isn’t always a bed of roses”. My first job ended in failure. His reason was that I showed up late twice and took more breaks than others.
“Oh, I’m a loser.” I thought to myself. I believed that thought was shared by my brothers, neither of whom had ever been fired, and my mother, though she would never express it in those terms.
“I am too sad to do anything.” I complained to my father.
After listening to my words, he laughed. “It’s not funny; I’m a loser.” I said. “No, you’re not. This is a part of growing up. You will be all right, my son,” he said, patting my shoulder. “Trust me. You are good enough.” I looked into my father’s eyes and I could see he really trusted me. And I believed him.
Since then, “Trust me. You are good enough.” are the only words I have repeated to myself. I have worked hard to be a better person and cherished every moment I have got. Finally, I succeeded in entering a good university. After graduation I found my dream job.
11.How much did the author get an hour at his part-time job?(no more than 5 words)
12.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 mean?(1 word)

Passage 3
It was the final part of the 2016 World Triathlon Series in Mexico. With just 700 meters to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother, Jonny, was in the lead. Alistair pushed himself towards the finish line in the burning heat, but as he came round the corner, he saw his brother about to fall onto the track. Alistair had to choose — brotherly love, or a chance to win the race?
For Alistair, the choice was clear. His brother was in trouble. He had to help. Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line. The move put Jonny in second place and Alistair himself in third. It was an unexpected end to the race, but Alistair did not want to discuss it with the media. He just wanted to see his younger brother, who had been rushed to the medical area.
The Brownlee brothers have been doing triathlons since they were children. “Obviously, when your older brother is doing it, you think it’s a cool thing to do,” says Jonny. Alistair says that they encourage each other as much as they can when they train. Despite arguments over “stupid things” now and then, Alistair agrees that having a brother is an advantage. “Throughout my entire life, I’ve had my brother trying to beat me at everything I do. It has been an enormously positive force.”
Watched by millions, the ending to the race has divided opinions: should the brothers have been disqualified or highly praised for their actions? But for Alistair, his decision was easy to explain: “Mum wouldn’t have been happy if I’d left Jonny behind.” At that moment, he was no longer an athlete aiming for a medal — he was just a brother.
16.Who was in first place when there were 700 meters left in the race? (no more than 5 words)
17.How did Alistair help his brother? (no more than 15 words)
18.What is Alistair’ s opinion on having a brother as a training companion? (no more than 15 words)
19.What does the underlined word in Paragraph 4 mean? (no more than 1 word)
20.Should the brothers be highly praised for their actions? Explain the reasons. (no more than 20 words)
Passage 4
When I was a boy, our big family sometimes gathered together at my aunt’s small house in summer. Relatives from all over the country would come to visit. The adults used to crowd together to talk and catch up on each other’s life. All of us would be sent out into the front vard to play while dinner would slowly cook for all of us. Those were the days before video games and smart phones, so we often ended up playing a good old-fashioned game of tag
I remember one of those times especially.
I was the smallest of all the kids there, so I got caught first but couldn’t catch anyone else. Though I chased after my brothers and cousins hard they were all too fast for me. I grew more and more annoyed. I finally lunged at (猛冲) one of my brothers and fell face first into the dirt. I got up with tears in my eyes. Then I saw one of my female cousins standing there. She started to run but was going much slower than before. I easily caught up and tagged her. Then she turned to me, smiled and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing with great glee while she turned and started to chase one of my elder brothers.
I see now how her act of kindness that day saved me from sadness and returned me to joy. It didn’t matter that we hardly ever saw each other. We were family and she loved me. We are all one, we all belong to each other, and we are one big, beautiful family. Perhaps it is time that we should share our love, our kindness, our laughter, and our joy with everyone without fear. Perhaps it is time to finally and forever bring this world together in one big family party.
21.What did the elders of the author’s family do when they gathered together? (no more than 10 words)
22.Why couldn’t the author play the game of tag well? (no more than 15 words)
23.What does the underlined word “glee” in the third paragraph mean? (1 word)

Passage 5
I tried to give up take-outs (外卖) earlier this year. You may wonder why I made that decision. I spent a good amount of money on take-outs every month. I almost spent 30 percent of my money in dining every month. I hoped giving up my costly habit would save me some money.
My boyfriend had tried many times to get me to plan out my meal ahead of time, but I never listened to him. When I told him my decision, he took it with a grain of salt. But later when I made it, he finally believed I could do it.
In order to prepare meals myself, I knew I would need a few recipes (菜谱) to prepare on Sundays and eat throughout the week. I depended on Pinterest for recipes. I learned to make some dishes, which are delicious to make.
Because I gave up take-outs, I not only saved some money, but also spent less time in line for lunch. It freed up a great amount of work time. But I noticed I hardly left the office on days when I brought my lunch. Actually, I wish I had still taken my lunch breaks just to get a breath of fresh air.
Research shows that spending money on experiences brings the most long-lasting happiness. By saving money on food, I was better equipped to afford my vacation and was able to create memories I will treasure. I spent a one-week vacation in May this year and it was great.
After preparing food myself, I had better control of my money and was able to deal with unexpected cost. And I learned a few new recipes in the process!
26.Why did the author decide to give up take-outs (no more than 10 words)
27.How do you understand the underlined part in paragraph 2? (no more than 5 words)

Passage 1
Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most week, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “accomplishment.” I realized his tears weren’t out of sadness, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED ( General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a Sheriff’s department Amazingly, when he made a clean breast (坦白说出) of his education, they said they would hire him as long as he got his GED.He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about having another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade , learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain”. In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.
36.Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?( no more than 10 words)
37.What was the response of the Sheriff’s department when they learned of Kevin's education? ( no more than 10 words)
38.How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED in an interesting way? ( no more than 15 words)
39.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph mean? ( no more than 5 words)
40.What have you learned from Kevin Beard’s story? Please explain.( no more than 20 words)
Passage 2
A potato farmer, Cliff Young took part in a Sydney to Melbourne ultramarathon (超级马拉松) race in 1983. Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes.
Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers that if he could run after his sheep for a few days, he could surely compete with other runners.
The ultramarathon generally took 5 days to complete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue (疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old!
To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him.
After the win, he continued to run in many ultramarathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance (耐力) racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle”, is a famous running technique (技巧) used by many runners in the world today.
Cliff Young showed that being old is not a problem, and being a champion doesn’t mean you need to have super-human strength, just super-human will.

42.What does the underlined word “suicidal” probably mean in paragraph 3? (no more than 5 words)

Passage 3
Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young athletes, she had Olympic dreams, but a serious illness kept her from competing in the Games. The disappointment didn’t stop her from going forward. Instead, she became interested in marathon swimming. A brilliant athlete, she was well-conditioned for spending long periods of time in the water. As a long-distance swimmer, she would compete against herself and the obstacles presented (呈现) by distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion (精疲力竭) .
For ten years Nyad devoted herself to becoming one of the world’s best long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for the course. In 1972 she set another record by swimming 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to the coast of Florida. Then she broke a third record when swimming around Manhattan Island in 1975.
Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. After battling the water for two days, she had to give up for the sake of her own health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. For Nyad her strength of purpose was just as important as reaching Cuba. That is how she defined success. It did not matter that her swim came up short; she believed she had touched the other shore.
When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer, she continued to try new things-travelling the world as a reporter, writing books and giving public speeches about her life. Diana Nyad works to inspire others, just as she did when she swam the waters of the world.

It was just an ordinary workday for Evoni Williams, an 18-year-old employee at Waffle House in La Marque, Texas. The place was busy, as usual, with a continuous flow of customers coming in and out. Then, a 78-year-old customer reached out to her asking for help with his food. The customer, who lived far from family support, had difficulty using his hands, so he was unable to cut his food.
Despite the restaurant being packed with customers and many tasks at hand, Evoni didn’t hesitate - she helped the man. Little did she know that her act of kindness was noticed by another customer, Laura Wolf, who found the scene unbelievable. Laura shared this heartwarming story online, and it quickly spread over the Internet, touching the hearts of many.
What Evoni regarded as just a simple action was, in fact, an important one that positioned her for a brighter future. Her kindness captured the attention of Texas Southern University, which awarded her with a $16,000 scholarship. It was reported that Evoni was working at the restaurant to raise money for college, and the university’s recognition was absent from her plans, making it an unexpected blessing.
In an interview, Evoni said she did nothing extraordinary. The thought has proved that she’s really kind and that helping others is something she does naturally and something she’s used to. Nowadays, with everyone focusing on their own tasks, Evoni’s action to stop and help stood out.

“I was just on my way to the American sweet shop to buy some drinks, when I saw this guy in his 30s sitting on the edge of the bridge,” he told Humans of Dublin. “I just thought, ‘wow.’”I stopped and asked him if he was OK, but I knew from the look in his eyes that he wasn’t, and he didn’t say anything, either, but I saw tears coming from his eyes. I begged him for a while to come down and sit on the steps, and eventually he did. Over the next 45 minutes, Jamie listened attentively as the stranger shared his burdens.
“We sat on the sidewalk on the south side of the Liffey and talked for about 45 minutes, about what was happening to him, why he was feeling that way...

根据第一段中“My first job ended in failure. His reason was that I showed up late twice and took more breaks than others.(我的第一份工作以失败结束。他的理由是我迟到两次,且比别人休息的次数多)”可知,作者失去工作是因为迟到两次,且比比让人休息的次数多。故填Because he showed up late twice and took more breaks than others.

No matter what setbacks you encounter, don’t be discouraged.
16.Jonny/Jonny Brownlee. 17.Alistair caught his brother, pulled and pushed him over the finish line. 18.It’s an advantage./It has been an enormously positive force. 19.different. 20.I think the brothers should be highly praised, because they showed deep brotherhood and kindness and care in human nature.
根据第一段中“With just 700 meters to go, Alistair Brownlee was in third place and his younger brother, Jonny, was in the lead. (只剩下700米时,Alistair Brownlee排在第三位,他的弟弟Jonny处于领先地位)”可知,当比赛还剩700米时,Jonny处于第一位。故答案为:Jonny/Jonny Brownlee.
根据第二段中“Alistair ran towards Jonny, caught him and started pulling him towards the finish line. Alistair then pushed his brother over the line. (Alistair跑向Jonny,抓住他,开始拉着他向终点线跑去。然后Alistair推着他的弟弟冲过了终点线)”可知,Alistair抓住Jonny,并拉着他,推着他冲过终点线。故答案为:Alistair caught his brother, pulled and pushed him over the finish line.
根据第三段中“Alistair agrees that having a brother is an advantage. ( Alistair认为有一个兄弟是一种优势)”和“It has been an enormously positive force. (它一直是一股非常积极的力量)”可知,Alistair认为有一个兄弟作为训练伙伴是很有优势的,他一直认为这是一种非常积极的力量。故答案为:It’s an advantage./It has been an enormously positive force.
根据划线词所在句“Watched by millions, the ending to the race has divided opinions: should the brothers have been disqualified or highly praised for their actions? (这场比赛被数百万人观看,对于比赛结果人们意见divided:这对兄弟是应该被取消资格还是应该因为他们的行为而受到高度赞扬?)”中“should the brothers have been disqualified or highly praised for their actions?”
I think the brothers should be highly praised, because they showed deep brotherhood and kindness and care in human nature.
