I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try. I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care. Paragraph1:A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2:I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2022年6月新高考卷(身残志坚的男孩) It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest. I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run. What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event! I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.” I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward. David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination. We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ 模拟演练 01 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. It’s a story of how I found the strength to change myself for better and then how I get rid of my fears to be even better. If anyone is inspired by this, that’s wonderful. I’d been stuck as this incredibly insecure, underconfident and just scared individual for years and years. Since childhood I’d been stuck like this. Kids I met for the first time looked at me rudely and unkindly. Even my friends—actually, I had very few friends because I just felt too ashamed and frightened to make some, though I was eager to and felt extremely lonely in the depth of my heart—laughed at me and gave me bad nicknames. I felt terrible, but I’d just resigned to a life where I’d be afraid of everything and be this “introvert” (内向的人) or whatever. I thought I would never be able to change, never, for my whole life. But then it all started changing. Something clicked. I suddenly determined to go on a diet, and lost some weight. It was tough. I felt hungry all the time. I was always tempted by the smell of bread and hamburger, even when I didn’t see them. But the toughest thing was that even if I had just had my meals, I felt hunger mentally. However, I held on. In over a period of 6 months I finally managed to stick to one of my diets. I didn’t know how. But I did make it. The loss of 90 lbs brought me from overweight straight down to underweight. This isn’t the best part. More importantly and inspiringly, I suddenly found strength in me. I realized I could be totally different. And maybe, I could even be whatever I wanted to be. This taught me that I could change myself. Then I wondered, perhaps, I could also get rid of those of my fears, just like I succeeded in losing my extra pounds. It might not be easy, but it might not be that difficult. Chance presented itself soon. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ It was from that point on that I started changing rapidly. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 02 Be a true runner For me, it was normal to feel lost at the intercamp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the twomile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice. I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12yearold who hasn’t been in other events to run the twomile!” He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him. “But I don’t know the way around the lake!” “You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled. Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.” At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled. “On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!” I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill. It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him. In a moment, Bill was up again and running. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I didn’t know when I crossed the finish line. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 03 One afternoon after school, Mary and his brother, Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back. Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith, “ Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.” Keith looked at the handphone. It was one of the latest models on the market. Looking very sleek, it was red in color with a black cover. The handphone must be expensive. Keith had always wanted a handphone, But his parents refused. He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on very word, “ I want to take the handphone, ” Mary could not believe her eyes. She merely stared at her brother, “ you can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?” Having made the decision, Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly. Outside the café, he ran to his bicycle. Mary had to run after him. Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Looking at the handphone, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell father about this handphone?” Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.” Mary said, “ Now you are lying, too. ” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest? Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone, “This phone number is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying her best to talk some sense into him. That night, Keith couldn’t go to sleep, reflecting in bed. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Back home from school, they phoned the owner’s house phone. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 04 My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul departed my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster (名单) posted on the wall of the locker room. My heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. At that moment, I froze. I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team while I was not. I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Hey coach, are you sure that the roster you posted is correct?” I asked anxiously, dreading (担心) his answer. “Yes, the names on the list are finalized. Sorry if you did not make it this year, there is always next year,” the coach replied. I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day. Everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other. After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the rear of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in our friend group failing to make the team. I saw my father’s car pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, played the radio, and started driving home. Noticing my bad mood, he asked me what was wrong. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Inspired by what my father said, I decided to work toward my goal. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 05 6-year-old Jesse was playing in the field when he suffered an electric shock, leaving him unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital. When he opened his eyes, he found both his arms gone. His mother was in deep concern. She was aware that Jesse couldn't depend on his parents all his life. So she guided Jesse to learn to use his feet. To her delight, within three months, Jesse could do many things with his feet, even write. It was time for Jesse to start school. On the first day, he was laughed at by other kids. Then Jesse surprised everyone that he wrote much more beautifully than the normal kids. While walking, Jesse often fell because it was hard for him to keep balance without arms. He practiced again and again until he made it to walk steadily. Then he could even run fast. At the age of 10, Jesse became an athlete of the disabled track and field team of his city. He practiced very hard. At the age of 14, he was able to run 400 meters in 56 seconds. And it was hoped that he could compete for the national champion. However, the international track and field rules suddenly changed and his event was cancelled. No one’s life is easy, especially for the disabled. But Jesse didn’t lose heart. He changed to swimming. He was talented and became a professional member at the age of 17 with the hope of winning the qualification of entering the Olympic Games. But just before the competition, his old injury returned and he only got the sixth place, which meant he could go no further in sports. He was at a great loss, wondering where his future was. His father encouraged him to go back to high school for academic study after so many years of sports life. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Once making up his mind, Jesse threw himself into what he was seeking. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 21 / 21 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 第24讲 个人成长篇 目录 知识点1 五大万能句型 2 知识点2 高频金句 4 故事中的主要人物通常面临巨大的困难。 Trying my best to overcome , I kept telling myself that I could make it. Trying my best to overcome my fear of speaking in public, I kept telling myself that I could make it.(我尽最大努力克服在公众场合讲话的恐惧,不断告诉自己我能行。) I kept telling myself I could make it, even though I had always been afraid of failure. To overcome her fear of the dark, she kept repeating to herself that she wasn’t alone. Though nervous, he kept urging himself: “As long as I persist, I can succeed.” Sensing my , sb comforted me with a warm smile and said, “You’ve got this.” Sensing my anxiety, my teacher comforted me with a warm smile and said, “You’ve got this.”(察觉到我的焦虑,老师用温暖的微笑安慰我:“你能行的。”) Sensing my hesitation, Mom gently patted my shoulder and said, “Believe in yourself.” Seeing my sadness, my friend encouraged me, “You've come this far—don’t give up now.” Noticing my nervousness, the teacher said gently, “Take a deep breath, and then begin.” Unsure of myself, I ________ as if trying to escape from the moment. Unsure of myself, I looked away and clenched my fists as if trying to escape from the moment. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者上中学的时候,社会学老师邀请作者参加一个写作比赛。 A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won the first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you’d win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It’s you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn’t have written this article. Again thank you very much!” I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn’t like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works.” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing. 2022年6月新高考卷(身残志坚的男孩) It was the day of the big cross-country run. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【参考范文】 We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s. I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a heart disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally. 词汇激活: 行动类: ①深呼吸:with a deep breath/breathe deeply ②坚持做:insisted on doing/be stick to doing 情绪类: ①热情:enthusiastically /with great passion ②骄傲:be proud of/take pride in 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Here’s the story of my growth over the past year. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】       Chance presented itself soon. One single time, I heard about a public speaking thing going on at my university, and for the first time, I actually managed to build up the courage to go there. It was liberating. For the first time I was able to share my story, and able to do it in front of dozens of people potentially judging me, and suddenly all the random fears about speaking publicly started disappearing. This taught me I could get rid of my fears. It was from that point on that I started changing rapidly. Using the fact that I could change, and that I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one. My fear of greeting strangers, my fear of talking to strangers, my fear of asking simple questions I should ‘already know’, my fear of hanging out with people, my fear of not knowing things, my fear of making new friends, classmates and teachers, my fear of being myself, all of which help make me a better one. 词汇激活 行为类 ①消失:disappear/vanish ②摆脱:get rid of/extricate oneself from ③开始:start/begin 情绪类 害怕:fear/dread 【点睛】 [高分句型1]. Using the fact that I could change, and that I could get rid of my fears, I started working on them one by one. (由第一个that引导的定语从句和第二个that引导的同位语从句,现在分词作状语) [高分句型2]My fear of greeting strangers, my fear of talking to strangers, my fear of asking simple questions I should ‘already know’, my fear of hanging out with people, my fear of not knowing things, my fear of making new friends, classmates and teachers, my fear of being myself, all of which help make me a better one. (“代词+of+which”结构的非限制性定语从句) 02 Be a true runner For me, it was normal to feel lost at the intercamp track. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 In a moment, Bill was up and running. I couldn’t think of anything but to follow him closely. I could even feel the air hitting my face and I was totally worn out. Naturally, my pace slowed down. Just at the moment, Barry’s words “Just follow Bill” called me back. Convinced that I was no longer a loser, I refreshed up again and accelerated and soon I was quite close to Bill again. Injected with confidence, I headed for the finishing line. The gun cracked again, announcing the last 200 meters. I closed my eyes, threw my head back and ran with my last ounce of strength, in the direction of the dream line. I didn’t know when I crossed the line. I still kept running on when a thunderous applause burst, which signaled the birth of the champion. I stopped and opened my eyes and saw my camp of kids and the camp counsellor gathering around me. “We have won the race! We are the champion!” they shouted and cheered, throwing me in the air. Showered with hugs and applause and whistles, I felt a surge of gaiety sweeping over me. To me, the race meant more than a champion; it well proved that I was not a loser as an athlete and that I could further explore my potential. Just as Hemingway put it, “The true nobility is superior to your former self.” 疲惫不堪:be worn out/be tired out/be completely exhausted ②.加速:accelerate/speed up ③.发掘我的潜力:explore my potential/exploit my potential 情绪类 ①.充满自信:be injected with confidence/be filled with confidence    ②.喝彩:cheer/applaud 【点睛】 [高分句型1]. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Noticing my bad mood, he asked me what was wrong.
