Passage 2
Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.”
Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined.

When I was a kid, my dad would often recite poems to me, especially short, funny ones. One that I especially loved was a short poem called The Purple Cow, written by a man named Gelett Burgess, which read:
I never saw a purple cow.
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I’d rather see than be one.
Gelett Burgess was an American writer, poet, and humorist, who was famous for his children’s poems. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1866, Burgess moved to San Francisco, California in 1887 after graduating from college. One of Burgess’ most famous works is The Goops, a series of illustrated children’s poems. The Goops poems describe a group of misbehaving children who are taught lessons about manners and good behavior through lighthearted poetry and playful black-and-white illustrations. His poem The Purple Cow also first appeared in The Lark in 1895. It became such a famous and popular poem that strangers would often recite it to him. Finally, Burgess became so sick of hearing it.
In addition to poetry, short stories and novels, Burgess even wrote a dictionary of words he invented called Burgess Unabridged: A New Dictionary of Words You Have Always Needed, in which he coined the word “blurb”, which is still commonly used today.

Passage 1
My brother’s words cut through my excuses. “You should see the world,” he said. I knew he was right. But traveling felt like something unreal. I was tired of backpackers talking about their fantastic trips. Then, my Greek best friend Jason reminded me of our promise: to visit his hometown in Athens.
Before long, I found myself on a plane flying over an ocean I’d never crossed, excited but worried about what would happen once we landed. The long wait proved worth it. Every step through the ancient streets of Athens brought new wonders. However, what I experienced later changed my thoughts of travel.
While we were walking, a strange sound caught our attention, and broke the quietness of the street. Curious, we followed the sound. Around the corner, rose a simple workshop — its roof covered with traditional bricks and the door rolled up high. Inside, common tools shone with uncommon beauty. A heavy silence filled the air as time slowed down, giving me the space to notice every little detail.
Lost in his work, the welder (焊工) paid no attention to us. All that was visible was his short hair and the body hardened by years spent at the workshop. His hands expertly worked the metal as if he were a magician creating sparks and flames. As the man continued, I was full of admiration. I admired his peace and satisfaction. I longed for the simplicity he showed. The moment moved me to tears. The sight was more attractive than any ancient building or artistic masterpiece.
Since returning back home, I look for meaning not in the grand (宏伟的), but in the simplest of moments — the ordinary made extraordinary. Happiness lies not in collecting passport stamps or material wealth, but in finding satisfaction within yourself. There is always beauty waiting to be discovered.

On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he’d walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up and then smiled.

You’re going to be OK, just hang on.” He then smiled again and walked away I can’t explain the effect of that man’s unexpected kindness and caring! That was thirty years ago. And I’ve never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. Passage 4
I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate and find great satisfaction in it, after all.

The world is lucky when our most brilliant minds choose to work for the common good. Young Ryan Honary is among one of the brilliant minds.
Shocked by the deaths in the 2018 Camp Fire, California’s frightening wildfire, Honary turned his attention to how to decrease future disasters. In 2019, Honary won a $10,000 prize in the Ignite Innovation Student Challenge for his early wildfire detection (检测) network, which provides app technology for firefighters. He was only in fifth grade at the time.
Turning 14 years old and going into the eighth grade this year, Honary is busy working in SensoRy AI, the company he set up. With the help of his father and a team of experts, the company has received a lot of attention.
Honary started creating websites when he was in third grade. He learned Python and JavaScript in a local after-school program. At the same time, he was interested in animals and the environment. He became worried as he saw how much the environment was under pressure.
When wildfires started ruining the air quality, destroying homes and killing some people, Honary thought about how AI can be used to solve environmental problems such as wildfires. In order to get data to train the machine learning models on his fire detectors, he collected real-world data from Google Earth about the Camp Fire of 2018 in California. Once a fire is detected by a fire detector, the information can be sent to the app he created. Also, machine learning can be used to predict where the fires are going.

Passage 1
Visitors at the 37th Lady of the Lake Festival in Irvinestown, Northern Ireland’s Fermanagh county, were in for a stinky (发恶臭的) surprise — a sheep dung spitting (吐羊粪) competition that really left players with a bad taste in their mouth.
The strange competition, organized by local man Joe Mahon, had players take mouthfuls of sheep dung and spit it out with interest to see who could spit the farthest. For some reason, Mahon appeared to be the most excited, even allowing sheep to poop (排泄) on his face.
Mahon is well known in the town for his strange ideas during the festival. This year, encouraged by a bird dung-spitting competition from Africa, he decided to replace it with sheep. Festival organizers took to Facebook to find volunteers to take part in the strange competition. The winner was promised £100 ($155). At last, 44 people finally signed up, joining Mahon on a dung spitting competition.
“I had the idea after a couple of Smithwicks,” Mahon said, speaking to “Sunday World”. “I didn’t know a lot about sheep dung but I had to go and collect the dung from a local farmer and then I left it in the back of the car. My wife took the car out shopping and when she opened the car she was nearly knocked out by the smell. She then threatened (威胁) to fight with me!”
Mahon’s father organized the first Lady of the Lake festival ever, 37 years ago. There have been a few other strange competitions in the past, like Turkey Walks and World Championship Wolf Whistling.

Passage 2
The Night Watch was commissioned (委托) in 1639 by Frans BanninckCocq, the captain of Amsterdam’s civil militia (民兵组织), and described him and his 17 members. It was completed in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn and spent more than 70 years in the hall of the civil militia.
In 1715, Dutch officials decided to move the painting to the city hall in Amsterdam’s Royal Palace on the Dam. The almost 12-foot by 14-foot artwork couldn’t go through the doors, so the movers made a decision and cut off the edges of the painting. The missing parts were never recovered. However, art historians have been aware of the missing items thanks to a smaller copy of the original scene painted by Dutch artist Gerrit Lundens.
In 2019, officials of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, where the painting has been displayed since 1808, decided to recreate the missing parts. To help them with the restoration (修复), the team, led by the museum’s senior scientist, Robert Erdmann, turned to a new AI algorithm (算法). Called Convolutional Neural Networks, it helps computers figure out what images may have once looked like. The scientists scanned high-resolution images of the original (原作) and Ludens’ painting to the computer. The AI was able to study and correct the painting’s perspective. It also recognized the exact colors used by the Dutch master and could even copy his brushstrokes.
The “missing” parts were printed and mounted to the painting. The left side included two men watching the event and a young boy running away from the militia. A drummer and a barking dog were added to the painting’s right side.
The AI helped the museum reproduce the best possible version of the missing pieces. But Taco Dibbits, director of the Rijksmuseum, thinks that the original missing parts are still around and will be returned to the museum some day. The restored painting will be on show and it can also be seen online on the museum’s website.

Passage 1
The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate communications class. He hungrily jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. And he was always respectful of the other students’ perspectives, as if each of them were a teacher. Jerry Valencia walked in with a smile—and he left with one too.
“These students gave me the confidence that I didn’t need to feel bad about my age,” Valencia says.
One day I spotted Valencia on campus. He said he would have to stop taking classes that semester and reapply for next year. By then, he hoped to have earned enough money and have his student-loan papers in order. He asked seriously whether he could still sit in on my communications class.
Sure, I said. But he wouldn’t get any credit.
No problem, he said.
Soon there he was again, back at his old desk, jumping into our discussions on how to find and tell stories in Los Angeles—a 63-year-old man with as much energy and curiosity as any of the youngsters in class.
A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
There is something splendidly unreasonable about Valencia’s determination to get a four-year degree and then a master’s. At his current pace, he’ll be 90 when he finally hangs all that paper on the wall. But that doesn’t seem especially relevant. He’s found all the youthful energy and academic opportunity stimulating Valencia’s grade in my class this semester will not show up on his transcripts (成绩单). But I’m giving him an A—and in the most important ways, it counts.
1.What made Valencia different from his classmates?
A.He was respectful to the teacher.
B.He activated the class atmosphere.
C.He was anxious to learn despite his age.
D.He often put forward different opinions.
2.According to the author, why did Valencia continue to attend classes?
A.He treasured the chance of learning.
B.He wished to show his determination.
C.He needed the credits to further his study.
D.He desired to have an A on his transcripts.
3.Which of the following best describes Valencia?
A.Powerful and independent. B.Energetic and generous.
C.Positive and determined. D.Considerate and knowledgeable.
4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.No pains, no gains. B.It is never too old to learn.
C.Strike the iron while it is hot. D.Where there is life, there is hope.

Snowboarding genius Su Yiming made a name for himself by winning China’s first Olympic gold in the sport on Tuesday. By cleanly stomping back-to-back 1800 tricks, the teenager landed the biggest prize so far in his young career—gold in the men’s Big Air at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The notable achievement realized a childhood dream to reach the peak of the sport, which he began to learn at the age of 4.
Now with two shinning medals hung around his neck, the 17-year-old described his superb Olympic debut ( 首秀) as an unbelievable experience that has made all his sacrifices worthwhile. “This feels so surreal that I’ve finally accomplished what I’ve dreamed of since I was little,” said an emotional Su.
Over the past four years, Su has combined his talent with hard work to produce one of the swiftest rises to prominence the sport has ever seen. When the Shougang Big Air venue hosted its first international event, Su was an unknown qualifier, who didn’t even make the final runs. Just over two years later, Su is the name on everyone’s lips at the venue’s Olympic debut—drawing the whole nation’s attention to the sport he loves.
“The biggest motivation (动力) for me is my love for snowboarding,” Su said, when asked about the secret to his success. “In snowboarding, I feel like I can show my own style and creativity. Every time I ride my board, it’s always a joyful moment. I hope through my experience, I can inspire more young people to get interested in the sport.”
Su, a former child actor who featured in action movies, said the Olympic gold will encourage him to seek for more breakthroughs—even beyond his athletic career. “I enjoy snowboarding just as much as I enjoy acting,” said Su, who turns 18 on Friday. “I think I still have a lot of possibilities to explore in my future career either in snowboarding or in acting. But now I just want to enjoy the moment and celebrate it as the best possible birthday gift.”

Passage 3
As a child, I was proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present-part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South. I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself. I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else-change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her roots. Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion. I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel (元音) sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now, I see that it was actually about justifying my hiding part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South, it’s important to me.
1.What made the author want to leave her hometown?
A.Appeal of convenience in cities.
B.Her dream of becoming a writer.
C.Outside prejudice against southerners.
D.Her desire for the northern accent.
2.How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother?
A.Upset. B.Pleased. C.Ashamed. D.Surprised.
3.Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent?
A.To prove herself right. B.To help Emily be a reporter.
C.To make herself influential. D.To protect Emily’s self-dignity.
4.What message does the text want to convey?
A.Stay true to your roots. B.Never do things by halves.
C.Hold on to your dreams. D.Never judge a person by his accent.

Passage 3
When I was a kid, my dad would often recite poems to me, especially short, funny ones. One that I especially loved was a short poem called The Purple Cow, written by a man named Gelett Burgess, which read:
I never saw a purple cow.
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I’d rather see than be one.
Gelett Burgess was an American writer, poet, and humorist, who was famous for his children’s poems. Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1866, Burgess moved to San Francisco, California in 1887 after graduating from college. There he began his career as a freelance (自由职业者) artist and illustrator (插画师) before turning to writing just a few years later.
One of Burgess’ most famous works is The Goops, a series of illustrated children’s poems. The Goops poems describe a group of misbehaving children who are taught lessons about manners and good behavior through lighthearted poetry and playful black-and-white illustrations. He first published these poems in a magazine called The Lark that he created with a group of friends, including children’s poet and mystery writer Carolyn Wells.

1.What can we learn about the author from paragraph 1?
A.He had a lot in common with his brother.
B.He didn’t show much interest in travelling.

A.The wonderful flying experience.
B.The walk through the ancient streets.
C.The well-designed workshop.
D.The chance meeting with a welder.
3.How did the author feel when he saw the welder working?
A.Curious. B.Touched. C.Confident. D.Anxious.
4.What did the author learn from the trip?

On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. Paul is currently interested in a history major (专业) because he began his first semester with classes that explored the causes of both World Wars, and he took an interest in learning those opinions from generations that never saw the conflicts (冲突). “We talk and share each other’s views, which makes me feel young again,” he said in a video. “Coming to school with all the young people counts for me and I have something to look forward to instead of sitting around and doing nothing.”
Paul’s positive attitude towards learning and his new college life was truly encouraging. His granddaughter, Gabby, posted his return to campus on her networking sites. “I thought it would be funny if we took a video of him walking into school for the first time,” she said in a video. “When I woke up the next day, there were 500,000 views.” So Gabby kept posting updates, and people kept watching. The most watched video had over 4 million views.

1.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A.He is content with his learning achievements. B.His good grades got him a good job.

The morning started like any other. The sun rose, casting its golden rays over the town. People woke up, prepared for their daily routines, and went about their business.

1.Why did Rembrandt van Rijn create the painting?
A.He loved recording people’s life of his time.
B.Frans Banninck Cocq requested him to do that.
C.He wanted to advertise Amsterdam’s civil militia.
D.The civil militia provided him with strong inspiration.
2.How did Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum restore the painting?
A.By copying Ludens’ paintings. B.By using advanced techniques.
C.By employing a Dutch artist. D.By creating a smaller painting.
3.What do we know about Taco Dibbits?
A.He isn’t satisfied with the reproduced pieces.
B.He is trying to find the missing part of the painting.
C.He hopes the original missing parts will be found.
D.He wishes the restored painting will be always on display.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The Night Watch finally comes to light.
B.The Rijksmuseum is restoring old paintings.
C.The Night Watch was restored to its original form.
D.The original parts of The Night Watch are still missing.

【答案】1.C 2.A 3.C 4.B

和第七段的“Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go.
根据倒数第二段中的“A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,” says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. (瓦伦西亚的许多同学显然知道他付不起那学期的学费,但他仍在做作业。25岁的大三学生杰西卡·埃斯皮诺萨说:“他来了,为了学习的乐趣和益处,他很乐意去上课。”)”可知,瓦伦西亚继续上课是因为他得到了学习的乐趣,珍惜学习的机会。故选A项。
根据第一段中的“He hungrily jumped into class discussions, with his humor and wisdom of experience. (他以幽默和经验智慧,如饥似渴地参加课堂讨论。)”和第七段中的“A lot of Valencia’s classmates apparently knew he couldn’t afford that semester’s tuition but was still doing the homework. “Here he is, willingly taking a class for the delight of it and benefit of learning,”says Jessica Espinosa, a 25-year-old junior. (瓦伦西亚的许多同学显然知道他付不起那学期的学费,但他仍在做作业。25岁的大三学生杰西卡·埃斯皮诺萨说:“他来了,为了学习的乐趣和益处,他很乐意去上课。”)”以及第七段的“Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go. (后来,我无意中听到瓦伦西亚想留在学校直到获得硕士学位,但他花了12年时间才完成社区大学学业,所以他还有很长的路要走。)”可知,瓦伦西亚积极参与课堂讨论、即使没钱交学费也要继续上课学习,而且有着坚定的决心要拿到学位,尽管按他的进度要花很长时间也不放弃,所以可以看出他是积极且坚定的。故选C项。
4.主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“The student arrived early, sat front and center, and stood out in my classroom in more ways than one. I’d say that he was about 40 years older than his classmates in my undergraduate communications class. (这个学生很早就到了,坐在前排和中间,在我的教室里,他在很多方面都很突出。我得说,他比我本科通信课班上的同学大40岁左右。)”和第七段的“Afterward, I overheard Valencia wanted to stay in school until he earned a master’s degree, but it had taken him 12 years to finish community college, so he had a long way to go. (后来,我无意中听到瓦伦西亚想留在学校直到获得硕士学位,但他花了12年时间才完成社区大学学业,所以他还有很长的路要走。)”可知,杰里·瓦伦西亚是一个比班上的同学大40岁左右的学生,尽管年龄很大,但他对学习仍然充满热情。在课堂上,他会积极参加讨论。他没有足够的钱去支付学费但他仍不放弃,通过工作赚钱,坚持继续完成学业,还要继续读研。可得出这篇文章主要告诉我们“It is never too old to learn. (活到老,学到老。)”的道理。故选B项。
Passage 2

【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.A
根据第二段的“While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities.(在成长过程中,我开始意识到,在我们的地区之外,南方人经常被认为是没有文化和无知的。我准备离开我在西田纳西州的小镇,开始新的生活,并在一些遥远的城市抓住大好机会)”可知,作者决定离开南部的家乡是因为其他人认为南方人没文化、无知,即外部对南方人的偏见。故选C。
2.推理判断题。根据第三段的“Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.(在我们的友谊之初,她妈妈问我来自哪里,以为是北方的某个地方。然后我觉得我的努力得到了回报,甚至想忽略这个错误)”推知,当被Emily的妈妈误会来自北方时,作者是非常开心的。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据第二段的“I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself. (我担心这会使我失去成为著名杂志作家的资格。我就得少说些“乡村”了。所以我抹杀了自己身份的一部分)”,第三段的“She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours(她决心为校报工作,而我醒着的大部分时间都在那里度过的)”以及倒数第二段的“I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel (元音) sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. (我建议她更像我,隐藏她标志性的曼彻斯特口音。在我们的大学生活中,我经常通过取笑她的元音来强调这一点。我告诉自己,我是在帮她实现当记者的梦想)”可知,作者通过改变自己的口音获得了在校报工作的机会。由此推知,作者努力改变Emily的口音是为了证明自己是对的,即改变南方口音就有可能获得好工作。故选A。
通读全文,并结合第二段的“I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else-change Emily’s accent.(我很惭愧,但我更惭愧的是我试图抹杀别人的那部分——改变艾米丽的口音)”和最后一段“Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. (卡罗琳奶奶过去常对我说:“女孩,别忘了你来自哪里。”现在我真的明白了。许多事情已经从记忆中消失了,但这件事却以令人不安的清晰印象留在了我的脑海中)”可知,文章想要传达的信息是:坚守本根。故选A。
