阅读配对:The Amazing Beavers
以下是关于河狸的五个段落,请从 A-F 中为每个段落选择最合适的标题(其中一项为多余选项)。
段落
18 Beavers are great builders. They use branches, stones, and mud to build dams across rivers. These dams create ponds, which become their homes. A beaver can cut down a small tree in just 15 minutes with its sharp teeth!
19 The ponds made by beavers are useful for many animals. Fish lay eggs in the calm water, birds find food near the ponds, and frogs live in the wet grass around them. Even after beavers leave, the ponds stay and help plants grow.
20 Once, beavers lived in many parts of North America and Europe. But in the 1800s, people hunted them for their thick fur and the scent glands used in medicine. This made their numbers drop sharply.
21 Today, people are working to bring beavers back. In some countries, laws stop hunting. Workers also build special fences to protect trees, so beavers and humans can live together without problems.
22 In 2021, a group of scientists studied beavers in Scotland. They found that beaver dams helped stop floods—water stayed in the ponds instead of rushing down hills. This surprised many people who once thought beavers were a nuisance.
A.How Beavers Help Prevent Disasters
B.Beavers’ Amazing Building Skills
C.The Many Enemies of Beavers
D.Beavers’ Ponds: Homes for Other Creatures
E.Trying to Save the Beavers
F.Why Beavers Disappeared in the Past

Swallows’ Journey
Swallows are small birds with long wings. Every spring, they fly back to our cities from warm places like Africa. 33 They build nests under the roofs of houses and on bridges, where they can stay safe.
However, in recent years, fewer swallows have returned. 34 Many old houses are being pulled down, and new buildings have smooth walls—no good for building nests. Also, farmers now use more chemicals, which kill the insects that swallows eat.
Luckily, people are trying to help. 35 In some towns, workers put special wooden boxes under bridges to give swallows new nesting places. Schools also teach students about protecting these birds.
Last month, a group of children in a village noticed something happy: swallows were building nests in the new boxes! 36 “We saw three baby swallows in one nest,” said 10-year-old Mia. “It’s like having new friends!”

The Shy Mimosa
Mimosa pudica, or the “sensitive plant”, is known for its special ability. When touched, its leaves fold up quickly, as if it’s shy. This clever trick helps it avoid being eaten by animals—most pests lose interest when the leaves close!
Mimosa grows in warm places like forests and grasslands. It loves sunlight and well-watered soil. But today, this plant is in danger. People often pick it for fun, and construction (建筑施工) destroys its home. In some areas, mimosa has become rare.
Scientists say mimosa is more than a “shy” plant. Its folding leaves can teach us about plant movement—how plants react to the world around them. Protecting mimosa means saving a small but important part of nature’s diversity (多样性).

Want to be a hero (英雄)? Better take a trip to the Great Wall. As the saying goes: You are not a hero until you have climbed the Great Wall.
The Great Wall was a long wall to keep enemies (敌人) from the country. Nowadays it is regarded as a wonder of architecture (建筑). Millions of tourists come to visit it each year. Also, it is the most visited place for foreign leaders when they come to China.
Why is the Great Wall so inviting?
The Great Wall has different parts and each one is very special. Jinshanling Great Wall in Hebei is the most beautiful section. In spring, it is in the middle of a white apricot blossom. During summertime, green plants circle the wall. In autumn, maple leaves paint a golden and red scene. And winter puts the great wall in a world of white snow.

What did people do to communicate in ancient times? Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns (阿尔卑斯号角) were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy too. So, alphorns are hard to blow. Then why use them? Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen (牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. Nowadays, they’re mostly used as musical instruments.
Some people have their own special ways of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled (口哨的) language called Silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometres, which means it can’t be used across much greater distances than shouting. Silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements.
Did you know it’s also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual (视觉的) communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy’s arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.
57.Alphorns are mostly used for today.
58.The Silbo is a kind of coming from Spanish.

The Journey of Sea Turtles
Sea turtles are ancient creatures that have lived on Earth for over 100 million years. They live in warm oceans around the world, but female sea turtles must return to the beach to lay their eggs.
A female sea turtle can lay up to 100 eggs at a time. The eggs are buried in the sand, which keeps them warm and safe. After about two months, baby turtles break out of the eggs and try to reach the ocean. This is a dangerous journey—many are eaten by birds or other animals.
Sea turtles are important to ocean health. They eat seagrass, which helps keep the grass beds healthy. Healthy grass beds provide homes for many sea animals. However, sea turtles are in danger. Plastic pollution, climate change, and beach development harm their survival.
Scientists and volunteers are working to protect sea turtles. They patrol beaches to guard nesting areas and clean up plastic waste. By learning about sea turtles, we can help make sure they continue their long journey on Earth.
