It was The Good Earth by Pearl Buck that brought comfort, the top-selling book that year. Born into a religious workers’ family in 1892, Pearl Buck left the United States and moved to China with her parents. Her education began at home with her mother teaching her American school things while a Chinese tutor taught her other subjects, including writings of Confucius. In 1910, she went back to America to study philosophy. After graduation, she returned to China and married John Lossing Buck, an agriculture expert, eventually settling down in a small village in the north of China. Had it not been for their first child Carol, who had an unusual disease causing her to have trouble learning, Pearl Buck might never have become a famous writer. The reason was money. She needed it to pay for her daughter’s care. She recalled why she chose China and its people as the subjects, “If none of you want to write these wonderful farmers. I will write about them. So, I wrote The Good Earth.” The Good Earth tells the story of a poor Chinese man named Wang Lung and his wife O-Lan. It recounts how they work hard and finally make enough money to purchase some land for a farm. They stick to the land even in times of starvation, themselves begging on the streets. Experiencing ups and downs, Wang finds happiness in owning land and raising crops. He even forbids his sons to sell the land after his death. Pearl Buck told her China stories with honesty and Americans were impressed by the new images of the Chinese totally different from those in Hollywood movies. The book earned Pearl Buck the Pulitzer Prize and was later adapted into an Oscar-winning movie. In 1938, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. 1.How did Pearl Buck benefit from her education? A.She thought the best education lay in home. B.She highly appreciated education in the countryside. C.She preferred Chinese education to Western education. D.She gained a lot from a combination of different styles of education. 2.Why did Pearl Buck decide to write books? A.Some Chinese advised her to do it. B.She was in desperate need of money. C.She couldn’t bear the boring rural life. D.She desired a good education for her kid. 3.What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A.Good fortune always favors the characters. B.Owning land is the lifeline for Chinese farmers. C.Chinese farmers lead a terribly miserable life. D.The characters make a fortune by buying and selling land. 4.What is the text mainly about? A.The moral values of The Good Earth. B.The fighting spirit of Chinese farmers. C.A woman writer’s sacrifice to save her ill child. D.A woman’s great China-themed literary achievements. 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.B 4.D 【难度】0.65 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了美国作家赛珍珠的个人经历、著作《大地》以及取得的成就。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段“Her education began at home with her mother teaching her American school things while a Chinese tutor taught her other subjects, including writings of Confucius.(她的教育是从家里开始的,母亲教她美国学校的东西,而一位中国家庭教师教她其他科目,包括孔子的著作)”可知,赛珍珠从不同教育方式的结合中学到了很多。故选D。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“Had it not been for their first child Carol, who had an unusual disease causing her to have trouble learning, Pearl Buck might never have become a famous writer. They stick to the land even in times of starvation, themselves begging on the streets. Experiencing ups and downs, Wang finds happiness in owning land and raising crops. She opened the case, got out her violin and started to play. She played seven pieces for about 52 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1, 200 people went through the station, most of whom were on their way to work. Four minutes later, a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to her. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule. The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurriedly, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. Al the parents, without exception, forced them to move on. In the 52 minutes the musician played, only 5 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 18 gave her money, but continued to walk their normal pace. She collected $34. When she finished playing and silently left, no one noticed it. No one clapped, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Ronya Bell, one of the musical geniuses in the world. She had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 4 million dollars. Two days before her playing in the subway, the tickets to her performance were sold out at a theatre in Chicago where the seats averaged $150. This is a real story. Ronya Bell’s playing at the subway station was organized as part of a social experiment. A gifted singer, Jeff began writing songs when he was in high school. “I was going to be the next Lionel Richie,” he recalls with a smile. In time, however, Jeff began to write songs, and in the early 1980s formed a group called The Steeles. Within a decade, not only had the group signed a recording contract with Daywind Records, but Jeff became a staff writer for the label and moved his family to Nashville, Tennessee. Throughout the 1990s, Jeff penned a string of hits for Daywind, including four No.1 songs for The Steeles. Not only does Jeff write for his group, but he also has his songs recorded by other artists that include Greater Vision, The Florida Boys, The Perrys, The Gaither Vocal Band and others. Jeff’s efforts have collected four BMI Awards for radio singles by Karen Peck & New River, The Inspirations, and Legacy Five, along with a popular song by The Steeles. That song also received a Dove Awards nomination (提名), as did “Not One Word” by The Collingsworth Family. What has changed for Jeff regarding songwriting over the last three decades? “I used to write everything alone, but now I enjoy co-writing, especially with my son, Brad.” The Steeles’ latest StowTown Records release, Be the Reason, contains multiple songs penned by the father and son, with each having an unusual feel. Perhaps this is because Brad — at age 30 — is writing as a young man from the point of looking forward, and Jeff — at age 63 — is writing from a pen of wisdom and experience. This may also be part of the reason that their songs are connecting with all of us: because we, as listeners, can benefit from both generations. 1.Who might Lionel Richie be? A.A staff writer. B.A friend of Jeff’s. C.A well-known singer. D.A member of The Steeles. 2.What does Paragraph 2 mainly focus on? A.Jeff’s essential role in his group. B.Jeff’s influence on other artists. C.Jeff’s secret to success as a singer. D.Jeff’s extraordinary achievements. 3.What is special aboutBe the Reason? A.It was completed by Bra d himself. B.It shows intergenerational interaction. C.It displays people from all walks of life. D.It received a Dove Awards nomination. 4.Which of the following can best describe Jeff? A.Talented and devoted. B.Tough and generous. C.Academic and friendly. D.Ambitious and imaginative. 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.B 4.A 【难度】0.65 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了歌手兼歌曲作者Jeff Steele的职业生涯,以及他与儿子Brad的合作。 1.推理判断题。根据第一段中“A gifted singer, Jeff began writing songs when he was in high school. “I was going to be the next Lionel Richie,” he recalls with a smile.(Jeff 是个有天赋的歌手,高中时就开始写歌了。“我将成为下一个Lionel Richie,”他笑着回忆道)”可知,Jeff曾经梦想成为下一个Lionel Richie,可推知,Lionel Richie是一位著名歌手。故选C。 2.主旨大意题。根据第二段的“Throughout the 1990s, Jeff penned a string of hits for Daywind, including four No.1 songs for The Steeles.(在整个20世纪90年代,杰夫为Daywind创作了一系列热门歌曲,其中包括The Steeles的四首冠军歌曲)”以及“Jeff’s efforts have collected four BMI Awards for radio singles by Karen Peck & New River, The Inspirations, and Legacy Five, along with a popular song by The Steeles. She is the first French female to win the prize. In the words of the Nobel committee, Ernaux was given the award “for the courage and clinical acuity of her writing”. Having spent over 50 years as a writer, the 82-year-old winner has published more than 20 books. Rather than consider herself a writer of fiction, Ernaux has used the term “an ethnologist of herself”. Born in 1940 in a village in Normandy, France, Ernaux grew up in a working-class environment. Her parents ran a combined grocery store and cafe. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer. Two books by other French writers inspired her to be a writer: The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu, The former led her to write about feminism, and the latter raised her awareness of the huge gap between her and the environment she grew up in. Besides her reading influences, her “upbringing and experiences navigating adolescence and adulthood” also inspire many of her works, noted CNN. Though the matters Ernaux describes in her books are serious and even sometimes heavy, they are always written in plain language. Ernaux described her style as “flat writing” through which she aims to tell her stories objectively, “unshaped by florid(过多修饰的)description or overwhelming emotions”, noted Fox News. “She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so forth. I mean, really hard experiences.” Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said after the award announcement in Stockholm. 1.What can we learn about Annie Ernaux? D.they lived in the same community. 3.Which of the following best describes Ernaux’s writing style? A.Plain and relaxing. B.Descriptive and serious. C.Humorous and sharp. D.Objective and easy to understand. 4.Why is Annie Ernaux different from other writers, according to Anders Olsson? A.She focuses on serious matters. B.She suffered a lot of hardships. C.Her works are short and moving. D.Her works are about unexplored subjects. 【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.A 【难度】0.65 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作家安妮,埃诺因在写作中表现出的勇气和洞察力而获奖,以及介绍了她的写作经历和特点。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段中“In the words of the Nobel committee, Ernaux was given the award “for the courage and clinical acuity of her writing”.”(用诺贝尔委员会的话说,埃诺“因为她写作的勇气和敏锐”而获奖。)可知,安妮,埃诺因在写作中表现出的勇气和洞察力而获奖。故选B项。 2.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Two books by other French writers inspired her to be a writer: The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir and Distinction by Pierre Bourdieu, The former led her to write about feminism, and the latter raised her awareness of the huge gap between her and the environment she grew up in.”(波伏娃的《第二性》和布迪厄的《区别》激发了她成为作家的灵感。前者让她开始写女权主义,后者让她意识到自己与成长环境之间的巨大差距。)可推知,其他法国作家激励她成为作家的原因是他们引导她找到了正确的写作方向。故选A项。 3.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中“Ernaux described her style as “flat writing” through which she aims to tell her stories objectively, “unshaped by florid(过多修饰的)description or overwhelming emotions”, noted Fox News.”(福克斯新闻指出,埃诺将她的风格描述为“平淡的写作”,她旨在客观地讲述她的故事,“不受华丽的描述或压倒性的情感的影响”。)可推知,埃诺的写作风格是客观易懂的。故选D项。 4.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Though the matters Ernaux describes in her books are serious and even sometimes heavy, they are always written in plain language.”(虽然埃诺在她的书中描述的事情是严肃的,有时甚至是沉重的,但它们总是用朴素的语言写出来的。)以及最后一段““She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so forth. For Candace Leslie Cima, aging is inescapable but it shouldn’t keep older people in a box, especially when it comes to beauty and fashion. That she’s old doesn’t mean she can’t wear beautiful and stylish clothes. This is what Cima always tells people when they question her fashion statement. Cima’s journey to challenging aging began when she created her social media account at 72. She wanted to know what influencers were like and discovered there weren’t many of them in her age group. This inspired her to create her own fashion blog and upload fashion videos on social media platforms. Cima grew her social media presence through her ongoing documentation called “Life in My 70s”. Her videos became famous on the Internet and gained millions of views. One of her most popular videos had 7.5 million views while the other one had 5.6 million views. A lot of her viewers were amazed by her creativity in mixing and matching different fashion pieces. Others admired her for looking really good at her age and wearing whatever she wanted. One of the commenters wrote, “If I’m not like this when I am older, then I don’t ever want to be 75.” Apart from uploading fashion videos, Cima is also devoted to her fashion blog where she writes about fashion and aging. Her blog’s goal is to inspire women from all walks of life and to remind them that aging is a natural but beautiful process that no one should be scared of. She wants to inspire women to accept these changes and look at them positively. “The only way that view is going to change is that we as older women show them that aging is a gift, something to be accepted, value d and shared,” the fashion blogger wrote. 1.Which of the following reflects Cima’s opinion on aging? A.It keeps older people in a box. B.It does not affect the pursuit of beauty. C.It means no beautiful and stylish clothes. D.It limits the fashion choices of the elderly. 2.Why did the author mention Cima’s videos? A.To show her popularity. B.To inspire others to follow her. C.To prove her viewpoints. D.To recommend them to readers. 3.What suggestions does Cima give to women? A.Accepting what you are like. B.Reviewing your way of life. C.Doing whatever you want to. D.Being positive about getting old. 4.What can we learn from Cima’s story? A.Getting old doesn’t mean you have to accept it. B.No one can disappoint you except yourself. (一位70多岁的时尚博主在社交媒体上展示了不同的风格和服装,证明了时尚适合所有年龄段。)”可知,一位七十六岁的时尚博主在社交媒体上展示了她不同的穿搭风格,这告诉我们年龄不是限制我们追求时尚和自我表达的障碍。因此,人生的每个阶段都可以美丽而灿烂。故选C。 2.(23-24高二上·云南昆明第八中学·期中) Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan Mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again. Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby. Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas. The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend Oily Barkley. It takes beneficiaries (受益人) who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature. Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.” 1.What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about? A.Jackson was tired of ball games. B.Jackson was no stranger to suffering in life. C.Jackson was well respected for his survival skills. D.Jackson was advised to do exercise by his doctors. 2.What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in the third paragraph? A.Give up. B.Rely on. C.Tear apart. D.Carry through. 3.Why did Jackson start M2M? A.To educate sports lovers. B.To raise money for the disabled. C.To encourage safe mountain climbing. D.To help people with similar experiences. 4.What kind of person is Jackson probably? A.Enthusiastic and independent. B.Creative and aggressive. C.Adventurous and inspiring. D.Responsible and humorous. 【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D 4.C 【难度】0.85 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要介绍了Ed Jackson,一个勇于冒险的人,他在冒险中面临的挑战对他的身体和精神恢复都产生了巨大的影响,并且创办了慈善组织M2M,帮助有类似经历的人。 1.主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan Mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30℃. (Ed Jackson的团队正试图爬上喜马拉雅山的山顶。然而,在出发几周后,他们被困在那里过夜,没有水,没有食物,也没有帐篷,气温约为零下30℃。) ”和第二段中“Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. (实际上,在山顶的那个晚上并不是Jackson第一次与死神擦肩而过。)”可知,前两段主要讲述Jackson经历的磨难,即Jackson对生活中的苦难并不陌生。故选B。 2.词义猜测题。画线词前所在的下一句“To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. (为了纪念他的事故一周年,Jackson给自己定下了攀登威尔士最高的山峰斯诺登山的目标,尽管当时他还拄着两根拐杖。)可知,Jackson不需再使用轮椅了,故划线词所在句意思是“幸运的是,Jackson在事故发生六个月后设法丢弃了他的轮椅。”所以划线词discard意为“抛弃”,与动词短语give up同义,故选A。 3.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend Oily Barkley. She asked for a cup of water and a menu and eventually ordered a bacon cheeseburger which costs roughly $12 at my restaurant. After eating for a few minutes, she asked me for a napkin(餐巾) and a pen. I saw her writing on the napkin but didn’t think anything of it. When I turned around, she was gone. As I went to clear her plate, I noticed that she had left a $100 bill along with a note that read, “Today marks my 14th day of chemo(化疗) along with my 26th birthday. Life’s been good to me so far, and I think I will pass my luck on to someone else. Have a great night!” I have never been so touched by a stranger in my entire life. About 3 months ago, my own mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, so this hit very close to home. Having just witnessed my mother completed her first 5-week cycle of chemo, I know the pain and exhaustion this young woman is feeling. On top of the chemo, she was selfless enough on her own birthday that she gave a stranger a gift. This young woman has completely touched my soul and has affected my life in a way that I will never forget. I hope to see her again one day, so I can tell her how much her random act of kindness has touched me and finally changed my life. Thank you for being such a beautiful person and I pray that you get well. Thank you for making the world a better place. 1.The author might work as a ________. A.singer B.doctor C.cook D.waitress 2.How did the girl offer her kindness? A.By giving a $100 bill to someone in need. B.By offering free chemo to someone else. C.By buying a dinner for someone else. D.By writing a letter full of kindness. 3.What does the underlined phrase “hit very close to home” in Paragraph 3 mean? A.To make somebody go home. B.To know somebody’s address. C.To have a strong effect on somebody. D.To send food to somebody’s home. 4.Why does the author want to see the girl again? A.To thank her for the money she left. B.To tell her what effect she has on the author. C.To tell her she is very beautiful. D.To wish her good luck in getting well. 【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.B 【难度】0.65 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了作者在餐厅当服务员时,一个接受化疗的姑娘在自己生日这天向素不相识的作者传递善意,这让作者非常感激。 1.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“She asked for a cup of water and a menu and eventually ordered a bacon cheeseburger which costs roughly $12 at my restaurant.(她要了一杯水和菜单,最后在我的餐厅里点了一个培根奶酪汉堡,大概要12美元。)”和第二段中的“After eating for a few minutes, she asked me for a napkin(餐巾) and a pen.(在吃了几分钟之后,她问我要一块餐巾和一枝钢笔。)”可推测出,作者在餐厅当服务员。故选D。 2.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“She asked for a cup of water and a menu and eventually ordered a bacon cheeseburger which costs roughly $12 at my restaurant.(她要了一杯水和菜单,最后在我的餐厅里点了一个培根奶酪汉堡,大概要12美元。)”和第二段中的“As I went to clear her plate, I noticed that she had left a $100 bill along with a note that read, ‘Today marks my 14th day of chemo(化疗) along with my 26th birthday. It looked like a great day of presentations highly relevant to our research, and I expected they would be eager to attend with me. However, no one was interested. A year earlier, I left India for the United Kingdom to pursue my research career. At work, I shied away from engaging in discussions or putting forward my opinions. I was afraid my coworkers would realize how weak I really felt. Some mornings just stepping out of my room and going into the lab seemed a tough task. Socializing didn’t help, as I constantly feared committing social mistakes. I longed for new experiences, but my insecurities prevented me. I started to keep more and more to myself. That began to change after a quiet breakdown in the lab prompted (促使) me to contact the university’s mental health services. The consultant suggested I attend a nearby concert by a famous singer from my home country. I couldn’t miss it. So, there I was in the packed concert hall, surrounded by strangers—all of us clapping and singing the choruses of the familiar songs. It was a beautiful night, and it proved to be a turning point. My growing self-confidence carried over into my work, where I started to speak up and put forward my opinions. I offered to help coworkers design and trouble shoot experiments. I began to ask questions during departmental meetings. I finally felt like an active member of the group. So, when that conference came around, I felt comfortable registering to attend on my own-and I’m so glad I did. Not only did I meet the speakers, but I also introduced myself to other attendees. The encounters inspired me to critically evaluate my own professional interests. 1.How did the author probably feel at first about his coworkers’ response? A.Eager. B.Worried. C.Disappointed. D.Uninterested. 2.Why did the author contact the mental health services? A.He wanted to solve a conflict. B.He struggled to conduct research. C.He often made big mistakes in socializing. D.He lacked confidence in a new environment. 3.What happened during the concert? A.The author got the consultant’s help. B.The author sang along with the strange audience. C.The author met with a previous coworker. D.The author connected a song with his research. 4.What did the author do at last? A.He went to the conference alone. B.He turned to experts for advice. C.He took full charge of the lab. D.He changed his professional interests. 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.B 4.A 【难度】0.65 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者曾经害怕犯社交错误而不跟人来往,后来联系了大学的心理健康服务机构后情况开始变化,作者的自信不断增长,并延续到工作中。 1.推理判断题。根据第一段的“When I found an advertisement for a conference by chance, I couldn’t wait to tell my coworkers. I went out to sea with them regularly. On the morning of 26 December, I was due to set out with a group of six fishermen in a small boat. It was about 8 am, and the sea looked different. The water was totally still. I could tell from the way the fishermen were behaving that something wasn’t right. They seemed to be discussing whether or not we should set off, but the eldest, who operated the boat, gave the go-ahead order. About 20 minutes later, one of the fishermen pointed to a small white spot far in the distance. It looked like a football. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. We were aware that this was a tsunami wave speeding through the ocean like a tornado. With a big wave, you would usually try to get as far out as possible into the open sea. The deeper the water, the weaker the wave. But we weren’t far enough out to be safe, nor close enough to the shore to make it back before the wave would hit the land. We were trapped. When I realized that the fishermen, who were born on the sea, were afraid, I began to feel really scared. At some point the elder took control. No one panicked or screamed. The captain told the six of us where to sit, so we would balance out the boat. I was sitting on one of the benches in the middle, with my back facing the five to seven meter high wave. I took hold of my seat firmly, closed my eyes and said goodbye to the world, my family and friends, in my mind. Suddenly there was a huge noise and a sudden movement. The wave had hit the boat, but in the very second of impact, the incredibly skilled captain got it right. He managed to sail up and on to the wave. Then the boat glided from the tip of the wave down behind it, into safe waters. He had saved us all. Surviving gave me a deep understanding of how short life can be. I’ve been going back to southeast Asia almost every year to thank the people who saved my life. 1.What happened before they set out to the sea? A.They found something unusual. B.They didn’t want the author to go with them. C.They received the warning from the captain. D.They knew the disaster was on the way. 2.Why the author felt scared in the article? A.Because they came across a shark. B.Because their boat was out of order. C.Because he realized a tsunami was approaching. D.Because the water was very deep. 3.Which of the following words can best describe the captain? A.Smart and modest. B.Experienced and calm. C.Kind and honest. D.Humorous and determined. 4.Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the article? A.The Daily Life of Fishermen B.A Dangerous Sea Adventure C.How to Survive a Tornado D.A Photo of a Tsunami 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.B 【难度】0.65 【导语】这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述作者和渔民们一起在船长的指导下脱险于海啸的故事。 1.细节理解题。根据第二段“They seemed to be discussing whether or not we should set off, but the eldest, who operated the boat, gave the go-ahead order. And it was wonderful to see football fields full of them—and I wanted to revisit that on a larger scale (规模). I knew I had to go to see the migration (迁徙) in Mexico. But I was on a budget. I didn’t want to rent a car in Mexico or take a bus to Valle de Bravo, the starting point for most butterfly journeys, so I called the guys at The Muddy Boot, travel experts in Mexico who can make almost anything happen at a reasonable price. And so, on January 2, I found myself in The Muddy Boot van (面包车), being driven for two hours from Mexico City to Valle de Bravo, a lovely town on a volcanic lake which is a central point for the butterfly journeys. I booked a two-night stay at the Hotel Rodavento, an all eco-friendly hotel with individual wooden houses spreading throughout the forest and around a lake. The first reserve I visited was Piedra Herrada, a popular destination, as it is only 40 minutes away from Valle de Bravo. The climb up is tiring. It is advisable to hire a horse. But the horse cannot take you all the way, and there is some hiking in thin air, so you must be patient, drink a lot of water, and be in reasonably good shape. The walk is more than worth it though. As I struggled to catch my breath, I looked up and lost my breath again. At first glance, the trees had turned into different shapes, but on closer look, every inch of them was covered with butterflies. A few flew through the air (Most of them were not warm enough). As the sun rose, they began to come alive. Soon the air was filled with flying butterflies, transforming the forest into something magical and straight out of a fairy tale. 1.Why did the author choose to take The Muddy Boot van? A.She didn’t like a car. B.She preferred to travel alone. C.She wanted to save some money. D.She hoped to reach the destination earlier. 2.What can we learn about Piedra Herrada? A.It is a very high mountain. B.It is far from Valle de Bravo. C.It is full of wild animals. D.It is only accessible by riding a horse. 3.What made the author’s hiking worthwhile? A.Becoming healthier. B.Breathing in fresh air. C.Finding trees of different shapes. D.Seeing the butterfly migration. 4.What type of writing is the text? A.A news report. B.A scientific paper. C.A travel diary. D.A commercial advertisement. 【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.C 【难度】0.65 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者的一次旅行日记,作者记录了自己前往墨西哥布拉沃谷看蝴蝶的一次经历。 1.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“But I was on a budget. Turere invented the Lion Lights system at age 11. As a young Maasai boy, Turere was entrusted with the vital responsibility of protecting his family’s cattle from predators (捕食者). He recognised the need for a solution to prevent lions and other predators from attacking livestock (牲畜), which led him to develop the innovative light system that has since gained global recognition. Lion population in Africa is estimated to have declined by 43% in the past 20 years. Many lions are killed to stop them from eating precious livestock, significantly impacting the lion population, the area’s biodiversity and tourism. Known as Lion Lights, Turere’s invention is based on a simple concept: visually reproducing the human presence that keeps lions away. With changing sequences (序列) of flashing lights which are fixed on fences, the lions cannot become comfortable with the patterns and are discouraged from hunting livestock. As word of Turere’s technology and its success spread, other community members began requesting the system for their properties, and now over 2,000 homes in Kenya use Lion Lights. The system typically runs on solar energy but can also be coupled with wind power when the weather is cloudy or there is little sun. In 2013, Turere founded the Lion Lights organization, which now cooperates with more than 50 young people in his native village. Turere’s commitment and resourcefulness have attracted international attention. His invention has been adopted in several other countries. “I want this story to inspire the young kids so that they too can do something. 1.What motivates Turere to invent Lion Lights? A.To win an award. B.To protect livestock. C.To maintain lion population. D.To shoulder family responsibility. 2.How does the Lion Lights system work? A.It controls electric fences to trap lions. 2.(23-24高二上·云南昭通云天化中学教研联盟·期中) On a cold February morning, a short woman with a violin case stood at an entrance to the subway station in Time Square. One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing? 1.Why did few people stop to listen to Ronya Bell playing? A.The performance was not good enough. B.They were not interested in music. C.It was too cold in the subway. D.People were in a hurry. 2.What did the parents do when their children stopped to look at the violinist? A.They would applaud for the performance. B.They would urge them to continue walking. C.They would stop to enjoy the music. D.They would give her some money. 3.Why did Ronya Bell play at the entrance to the subway station? A.To find out people’s reaction under such circumstances. B.To practise her skills in playing music in public. C.To make an advertisement for her future concert in Chicago. D.To make more money. 4.What is the purpose of the passage? A.To tell us the importance of enjoying music. B.To show us how to play music. C.To make us think about our fast-paced life. D.To report a unique subway performance. 3.(24-25高二上·云南玉溪第一中学·期中) Jeff Steele was born in Texas and grew up in Mississippi. 4.(23-24高二上·云南昆明五华区昆明第一中学·期中) For Aaron Welbor and his wife, Blaire, this year’s annual Gulf Shores vacation will assuredly rank as the most memorable. It is closely connected with that of another family’s, whom they’ve never met. Randy Williams, Wisconsin, lost his dentures (假牙) in Gulf of Mexico last Monday. A.The Daily Life of Fishermen B.A Dangerous Sea Adventure C.How to Survive a Tornado D.A Photo of a Tsunami 2.(23-24高二上·云南大理州民族中学·) When I was a child growing up in Ohio, the butterflies would sometimes pass through on their way to Mexico.
