Sharing experiences: “Last Christmas, I received a wonderful gift from my parents.” “At the Spring Festival party, we sang and danced together.”
Asking and answering questions: “What do you usually do on your birthday?” “I usually have a party with my friends.”
教学过程
A. Warming-up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual and then show them some short and exciting video clips of different celebrations, such as Christmas parades, Spring Festival lion and dragon dances, and birthday parties.
After watching the videos, ask the students some simple questions, like “What celebrations did you see in the videos?” “Which celebration do you like best?” to arouse their interest and lead them into the topic.
B. Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes)
Present the new vocabulary related to celebrations on the PPT. Use pictures, short animations, or real-life examples to help students understand the meanings. For example, show a picture of a Christmas tree decorated with colored lights when teaching the words “Christmas tree” and “colored lights.”
Read the words aloud one by one, and ask the students to repeat after you. Pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. Then, divide the class into pairs. Each pair takes turns to read the words to each other and correct mistakes if there are any.
Conduct a simple vocabulary game. Show the Chinese meanings of the words on the PPT, and ask the students to quickly call out the corresponding English words. The first one to answer correctly gets a small point. This game can help students remember the words more quickly and actively.
C. Sentence Pattern Explanation (10 minutes)
Write some typical sentence patterns for describing celebrations on the blackboard or present them on the PPT. Explain the structures and usage of each pattern in detail. For example, for the pattern “People celebrate... by...,” explain that “celebrate” is a verb meaning to observe a special occasion with festivities, and “by” is used to introduce the way of celebration.
Give some examples for each pattern and ask the students to translate them into Chinese to check their understanding. Then, ask the students to make their own sentences using the patterns. Invite several students to share their sentences with the class, and give them positive feedback and corrections if necessary.
Provide some fill-in-the-blank exercises on the PPT for the students to practice using the sentence patterns. The exercises can be gradually more difficult, starting from simple sentences with given words to more complex ones where students need to think of their own words to fill in.
D. Speaking Activity (15 minutes)
Group Work: Divide the students into groups of four or five. Assign each group a celebration topic, which can be drawn from a box. The topics can include “My Favorite Birthday Party,” “How We Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in My Family,” “Christmas Traditions in Western Countries,” etc.
Each group is required to have a discussion based on their assigned topic. They should use the vocabulary and sentence patterns they have just learned to describe the celebration, share experiences, and express opinions. The teacher walks around the classroom, listens to their discussions, and offers guidance and help when needed.
After the group discussion, each group selects a representative to give a presentation in front of the class. The representative should summarize the group's discussion and share the most interesting points. The other students listen carefully and can ask questions after the presentation. The teacher gives comments and scores to each group based on their performance, including content, language use, cooperation, and presentation skills.
E. Summary and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
Summarize the key vocabulary and sentence patterns of this class with the students. Review the main points of different celebrations that the students discussed.
Assign homework: Ask the students to write a short passage about a celebration they participated in recently. They should use at least five new words and three sentence patterns learned in this class. Encourage them to be as detailed as possible and bring their passages to share in the next class.
教学反思
After this class, I think there are both positive aspects and areas for improvement. On the positive side, the warming-up activity with video clips successfully attracted students' attention and aroused their interest in the topic. The vocabulary introduction and sentence pattern explanation with the help of visual aids and various practice methods made the learning process more vivid and effective. The group work and speaking activity provided students with sufficient opportunities to practice speaking English, and most students actively participated in the discussions and presentations.
However, there are also some problems. Some students still seemed a bit shy and reluctant to speak in front of the class during the group presentations. In the future, I need to create a more relaxed and supportive atmosphere to encourage these students to overcome their fear. Also, during the group work, I noticed that some groups had uneven participation, with a few students dominating the discussion. I should pay more attention to this in the future and ensure that every student has an equal chance to express themselves. In terms of time management, the group discussion took a little longer than expected, which made the summary part a bit hasty. I will adjust the time allocation more carefully in the next class to ensure a more complete teaching process. Overall, I will continue to improve my teaching methods and strategies to better meet the needs of students and help them improve their speaking skills in English.
