教学过程
A. Warming - up (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual.
Show some pictures of famous tourist attractions around the world on the PPT, such as the Eiffel Tower in France, the Statue of Liberty in the United States, and the Great Wall in China. Ask students: "Have you ever been to these places? If you have, can you share your travel experiences briefly?" Encourage several students to answer. This activity aims to arouse students' interest in the topic of travel and activate their prior knowledge related to travel.
B. Pre - reading (10 minutes)
Present some new words and phrases on the PPT one by one, and teach students how to pronounce and understand them. For example, when teaching "exchange", show a picture of two students from different countries shaking hands and explain the meaning. Use body language, pictures, and simple examples to help students better understand the new words and phrases.
Divide students into pairs. Let them discuss the following questions: "What do you usually do when you travel to a new place? What do you expect to experience during an exchange visit?" Give them 3 - 4 minutes to discuss. Then invite some pairs to share their ideas with the whole class. This can help students predict the content of the text and get ready for reading.
C. While - reading (15 minutes)
Fast Reading
Let students read the text quickly and silently. Ask them to find out the main idea of the text and answer the question: "What is the passage mainly about?" After students finish reading, ask some of them to share their answers. The main idea is that a group of British students had a wonderful exchange visit in Beijing, including their study, travel, and cultural experiences.
Careful Reading
Let students read the text carefully for the second time. Design some detailed comprehension questions and ask students to answer them according to the text. For example:
How did Sarah feel at first? (She was very nervous at first.)
What did the students do on weekdays? (They spent the weekdays studying with Chinese students.)
What places of interest did they visit in Beijing? (The Great Wall, the Summer Palace and the National Museum.)
What Chinese culture did Eric learn? (He learnt a bit of tai chi and was introduced to Chinese painting.)
After students answer the questions, check the answers together. This step helps students understand the details of the text and improve their reading comprehension ability.
D. Post - reading (10 minutes)
Role - playing
Divide students into groups of four. Assign different roles to each group member, such as a British student, a Chinese student, a tour guide, and a host family member. Let them create a dialogue based on the content of the text and their own imagination, showing the interaction during the exchange visit. Give them 5 - 6 minutes to prepare. Then invite some groups to come to the front of the class and perform their dialogues. This activity can help students further understand the text content and improve their oral English ability.
Group Discussion
Present a discussion topic: "If you have a chance to go on an exchange trip to a foreign country, what do you think are the most important things to prepare?" Divide students into groups of six. Let them discuss the topic in groups. Each group selects a representative to take notes. After 4 - 5 minutes of discussion, invite each group representative to share their group's opinions with the whole class. This can expand students' thinking and encourage them to express their own views.
E. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this lesson with students, including new words, phrases, sentence patterns, and the main content of the text. Emphasize the importance of learning about different cultures through travel.
Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about their own wonderful trip, using at least five new words and phrases learned in this lesson. The passage should be at least 80 words.
Encourage students to collect more information about famous tourist attractions in other countries and share it with the class next time.
教学反思
In this lesson, the use of pictures and group discussions in the warming - up and pre - reading stages effectively mobilized students' enthusiasm and made them actively participate in class. However, in the future, more diverse warm - up methods can be considered to better meet the different interests of students.
During the reading process, most students can understand the main idea and details of the text through guided reading. But for some students with relatively weak reading abilities, more individual guidance is needed. Maybe in the next class, more reading - skills training activities can be designed specifically for them.
The role - playing and group discussion activities in the post - reading stage provided students with good opportunities to practice oral English and express their opinions. But some students were still a little shy to speak in public. In the future, more encouragement and more small - scale speaking activities can be arranged to help them build confidence.
The homework assignment can help students consolidate the knowledge learned in class. But when evaluating students' homework, more attention should be paid to not only the language form but also the content and creativity of their writing.
