Passage 1
24-25九年级上·辽宁省沈阳市铁西区·期中
Dr. Chip Taylor teaches biology at a university in the United States. He studies one kind of North American butterfly— Monarch butterflies. Just like migrating (迁徙的) bird, this butterfly travels about 4,000 kilometres south in fall. Fantastic facts about the butterfly have been drawing Dr. Taylor’s attention.
In Mexico, the butterflies always return to the same small piece of forest, which is only 20 kilometres wide. Here, as many as 230 million butterflies spend the winter. They can cover some trees almost completely. The butterflies that return to the south are the great-great grandchildren (增增孙辈) of the butterflies that left for the north. When they begin to travel north in spring, the females (雌性) lay eggs. They lay eggs on only one plant: milkweed.
Scientists still don’t understand how the butterflies know when to fly south. If they are even a few days late, they will freeze. And how do all the great-great grandchildren find the same forest in Mexico every year? This is both puzzling and interesting for many scientists.
There are many mysteries yet to be discovered by those interested in science. Would you like to study biology?

After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-ray s to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845—1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones (骨头). Later, Röntgen took a photo of his wife’s hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an “X” in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. Passage 1
24-25九年级上·辽宁省沈阳市浑南区·期中
How much time do you spend looking at your smart phone, iPad, or computer every day? These electronic devices (设备) help us in many ways, but they may cause health problems, too.
Too much screen time can cause eye tiredness, which leaves your eyes feeling dry, painful and could even affect your eyesight. To help your eyes stay healthy, follow the “20-20-20” rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Your eyes aren’t the only parts of your body that could become worse from using electronic devices. People who type a lot can develop an injury. The repeated movement of typing with fingers can cause pain and lead to losing strength. To avoid this, do this exercise: put a rubber band (橡皮筋) around the tips of your five fingers and open your hand to make the rubber band bigger and wider. Repeat this a few times.
Scientists suggest that electronic devices can hurt your mind too. One of the biggest problems is that using these things can affect your sleep styles. Doctors say the screen light stops you from feeling sleepy. So they advise people not to use electronic devices for at least one hour before trying to sleep.
Another serious danger is Internet addiction (瘾). Many people turn to the Internet to get relaxation. They wish to get away from stress sadness or loneliness. Over time, they might start to depend on the Internet. To stop yourself from falling into this kind of trap, control the amount of time you spend online.
Remember, there is more to life than looking at an electronic screen. Try to use your smart phone or computer in a healthy way.
13.What does the first of the “20–20–20” rule in the passage suggest?
A.How long the break should last.
B.How often you have the break.
C.How far you look at things from you.
D.How many times you need to take a break.
14.Which picture best shows the rubber band exercise according to the passage?
A.B. C. D.
15.What may get worse by using electronic devices too much?
A.Eyes, fingers and mind. B.Ear, noses and feelings.
C.Eyes, arms and taste. D.Ear, hands and smell.
16.What is the writer’s purpose to write this passage?
A.Call on people to use electronic devices healthily.
B.Introduce the “20-20-20” rule for people to follow.
C.Tell people to keep away from the electronic devices.
D.Advise lonely people to use more electronic devices.

Passage 1
24-25九年级上·辽宁省沈阳市沈北新区·期中
Many people often spend hours watching videos on their phones before sleep, at the same time, they often turn off the lights. However, do you know that using your phone in the dark is not a very good idea? The screen of your phone sends out blue light and the light is quite harmful to your eyes. It can also be hard for you to go asleep.
What is blue light? Blue light is everywhere. It often comes from the artificial (人造的) light and the sun. Blue light is the part of visible light. Blue light passes easily through the cornea (角膜) of our eyes. So we can see it, but it is quite harmful to our eyes.
However, blue light isn’t so bad. After all, it is a part of sunlight. In fact, it can help to improve our sleep. The problem, however, lies in the bright screen lights we stare at each night. In other words, the problem isn’t exactly the exposure (暴露) to blue light, but the time of our exposure to it.
Some scientists studied the difference between reading a paper book and an e-book before bedtime. They found that it took longer for people who used an e-reader to fall asleep. These people were also less smart in the following morning.
So, to make sure you can sleep well, avoid screens an hour or two before your bed time. If you must use your phone before going to bed, turn on a night light.
21.According to the text, maybe people will ________ if they use their phone in the dark for long before sleep?
A.have a headache B.fall asleep soon C.not be sleepy D.turn on the lights
22.What does the underlined word “visible” mean?
A.can be seen B.can be touched C.can’t be seen D.can’t be touched
23.What does Paragraph 3 mean?

Passage 1
24-25九年级上·辽宁省丹东市东港市·期中
So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites (卫星) and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired (赋予灵感) by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names.
Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang’e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China’s first man- made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang’e I. More interestingly, the moon rover (巡视器) was named after the Jade Rabbit, who is the partner of Chang’e in the story. These old stories carry people’s best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true.
Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to, “visit” the sun, because we have a space project called KuaFu Mission.
Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2,000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China’s first quantum (量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground.
From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence it has on our modern science and technology.
25.In China, space scientists get ideas from ________ when naming satellites.
①old stories ②traditional projects ③ancient famous people ④popular inventions
A.①② B.①③ C.②④ D.③④

A.By listing numbers. B.By comparing facts. C.By giving an example. D.By reporting a result.
27.Which is the right structure of the text?
(①= Paragraph l ②= Paragraph 2,…)
A.B.C. D.
28.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the text?
A.To spread the traditional Chinese culture.
B.To explain how our scientists develop the space industry.
C.To introduce the achievements in our science and technology.
D.To tell how traditional Chinese culture influences our space science.
