B(改编)
Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness, my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.
Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in the speed events. I chose the jumping race.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to last.
The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks (得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena (竞技场). We practiced running and jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.
My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second, third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.
As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancy horse by two seconds!
I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.
4. Why did the writer lack confidence in winning?
A. He hadn’t done enough practice.
B. He felt the audience didn’t like him.
C. He was a rider with little experience.
D. He thought his horse was not as good as the others.
5. The underlined phrase “shown the gate” (in paragraph 4) most likely means “_________”.
A. instructed on how to get into the arena
B. removed from the competition early
C. taught how to make the horse look attractive
D. advised to participate in the timed-speed events
6. What did the writer gain from his experience?
A. Life can be unjust at times.
B. A positive attitude will bring success.
C. Nothing is impossible if one makes enough efforts.
D. One should not make judgments based on appearance.
7. The most suitable title for the story is _________.
A. A Race to Remember B. A Horse’s Tale
C. Neck and Neck D. A Challenging Age
D 5. B 6. C 7. A
根据第三段“The other members rode beautiful, registered horses. (其他成员骑着漂亮的有血统的马。)”可知,作者没有信心赢得比赛的是因为他认为自己的马没有别人的好。故选D项。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. (我加入了一个骑马俱乐部,遭受了对Cowboy长相的粗鲁评论和刻薄的嘲笑。)”和第四段“When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the gate. (当Cowboy和我走进了那个仅凭外表评价马匹的赛场,我们很快就被 。)”可知,因为作者的马匹品相不佳,得到了对手和观众的轻视,所以show the gate意思是劝退,B项“早点退出比赛”与之意思相近。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第十段“At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it. (在十三岁的时候,我意识到无论胜算几率有多大,只要我对某件事渴望到愿意为之努力,最终总会成为赢家。)”判断出,作者从这次经历中学习到如果一个人足够努力,一切皆有可能。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。结合全文,文章讲述了作者艰难地训练马匹,最后参加比赛获得第一名的故事,告诉我们只要努力,一切皆有可能的道理,A项“一次难忘的赛马”为短文最佳标题。故选A项。
C(原创)
Maths phobia (恐惧症) is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad about the phenomenon and hoping to find ways to solve it, wrote a book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It. Maths, he said, has so much to contribute to society that solving this fear is a challenge of the highest importance.
Why do we fear mathematics? At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that numeracy (计算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same thing. What, then, is mathematics?
Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. For me, part of the issue is that we are stuck in the first box. A focus completely on technical skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from finding patterns and understanding them, from seeing the true beauty of mathematics. That beauty lies in wonderfully elegant thinking that allows us to understand the infinite (无穷大), explore the amazing symmetries (对称) of art and nature, and delight in the perfection of an abstract world of ideas. As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普遍性) of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you are from. If we can be shown the beauty of mathematics, we will forget to be afraid of the technical details behind it.
Today’s self-help experts like to point out that, physiologically, we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. So, if your heart is racing and your palms are sweating before a big event, you simply have to tell yourself that you are excited. In the same way, fear can be negative (dread) or positive (awe). Our goal should be to try to move people from a view of mathematics as a collection of calculations whose great difficulty brings dread to an appreciation of a beautiful language whose complexity inspires awe.
A hundred years on, Auerbach’s writing is as relevant as ever. It is a timely reminder that “maths anxiety”, as it is now called, remains as much a challenge in 21st century as it was in the 20th.
8. Why did Felix Auerbach write The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It?
A. To explain the beauty of mathematics.
B. To show his own excellent mathematical skills.
C. To find solutions to maths phobia.
D. To prove that numeracy is different from mathematics.
9. What can be learned from Paragraph 2?
A. Excellent mathematicians don’t need to calculate.
B. Calculation is not the most important part of mathematics.
C. People with maths phobia are good at mathematics.
D. Numeracy is more difficult to master than mathematics.
10. What makes mathematics different as a language according to the text?
A. The universality of its truths.
B. The difficulty in learning it.
C. Its focus on technical calculations.
D. Its ability to explain natural phenomena.
11. What is our goal when addressing the fear of mathematics?
A. Encourage reading physiology books.
B. Inspire learning a foreign language.
C. Teach correct calculations.
D. Appreciate maths beauty, not just calculations.
C 9. B 10. A 11. D
根据第一段中“A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad about the phenomenon and hoping to find ways to solve it, wrote a book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It.(一百年前,德国物理学家Felix Auerbach对这一现象感到悲伤,并希望找到解决它的方法,他写了一本名为《对数学的恐惧及其克服方法》的书)”可知,Felix Auerbach写这本书的目的是找到解决数学恐惧症的方法。
根据第二段中“The fear of messing up a calculation may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that numeracy (计算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same thing.(对搞砸计算的恐惧可能是真实的,但有许多优秀的数学家却不擅长计算的事实证明,计算能力和数学并不是一回事)”可知,计算能力(numeracy)和数学(mathematics)不同,优秀的数学家可能不擅长计算。
根据第三段中“As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you are from.(作为一门语言,数学的与众不同之处在于其真理的普遍性——无论你来自哪里,你都能学得很流利)”可知,作为一种语言,数学的独特之处在于其真理的普及性,无论来自哪里都能理解其规律,即真理的普遍性。故选A。
根据第四段中“Our goal should be to try to move people from a view of mathematics as a collection of calculations whose great difficulty brings dread to an appreciation of a beautiful language whose complexity inspires awe.(我们的目标应该是努力让人们不再把数学看作是一种计算的集合,这种计算的巨大难度让人感到恐惧,而要欣赏一种美丽的语言,这种语言的复杂性让人敬畏)”可知,我们解决数学恐惧的目的是改变人们对于数学的理解,从一系列令人恐惧的计算改变成对于数学之美的欣赏。故选D。
D(改编)
Today and every day we are the targets of advertisers, fundraisers and politicians trying to persuade us to buy something, do something or think a certain way. And they’re good at it.
Over the years, they’ve learned a lot about which features to build into a communication and which psychological strings to pull at to increase its success. But by concentrating on the message itself, they’ve missed a crucial component of the process.
Research done in the last 15 years shows that best persuasion is achieved through pre-suasion — the practice of arranging for people to agree with a message before they even know what’s in it.
Pre-suasion works by focusing people’s attention on a selected concept, which in turn stimulates them to overvalue it over related ones. In one study, visitors to an online sofa store were greeted with images of either soft clouds or small coins in the background of its landing page. Those who saw the clouds were more likely to prefer soft, comfortable sofa s for purchase whereas those who saw the money preferred cheaper models.
Long before scientists started studying the process of pre-suasion, a few notable communicators already had an intuitive(直觉的)understanding of it.
For example, the pre-suasive strategy was employed in the late 1950s by the advertising firm Doyle Dane Bernbach to introduce the oddly shaped Volkswagen Beetle to a US market dominated by big, powerful, boat-like vehicles. The “We’re ugly but...” campaign strategically admitted to limitations in appearance before trumpeting(鼓吹)the auto’s strengths such as economy, reliability and simplicity. Credited with breaking open the US market for small cars, the ad campaign has been rated among the greatest of all time.
With considerable success, practitioners of social influence have always featured persuasive elements — great praises, emotional pull, lastchance opportunities—in their appeals. Perhaps because of that success, they’ve mostly missed an accompanying truth. For maximum impact, it’s not only what you do; it’s also what you do just before you do what you do.
12. What aspect of advertising has been commonly overlooked according to the text?
A. The use of psychological strings to influence people.
B. The effort to convince people without their knowledge.
C. The choice of communication channels for more success.
D. The improvement of message contents to attract buyers.
13. Which of the following examples best illustrates the concept of pre-suasion?
A. An online store trumpeting special offers.
B. A banker explaining interest rates to customers.
C. A car dealer offering discounts to potential buyers.
D. A shop playing Jingle Bells in Christmas season.
14. What can be learned about the Volkswagen Beetle ad campaign in the 1950s?
A. It focused on emotional appeals.
B. It failed to highlight its strengths.
C. It thoroughly changed the US small-sized car market.
D. It strategically introduced an unconventional product.
15. What can we infer about practitioners of social influence?
A. They have been expert at applying pre-suasion.
B. They have maximized their impact with persuasion.
C. They have generally ignored the effectiveness of pre-suasion.
D. They have combined pre-suasion with persuasion effectively.
B 13. D 14. D 15. C
根据第二段中“But by concentrating on the message itself, they’ve missed a crucial component of the process.( 但是,由于过于关注信息本身,他们错过了这个过程的一个关键组成部分。)”以及第三段中“Research done in the last 15 years shows that best persuasion is achieved through pre-suasion — the practice of arranging for people to agree with a message before they even know what’s in it.( 过去15年的研究表明,最好的说服是通过预说服实现的,即在人们还不知道信息内容之前就安排他们同意信息的做法。)”
根据第四段中“Pre-suasion works by focusing people’s attention on a selected concept, which in turn stimulates them to overvalue it over related ones.( 预说服的工作原理是把人们的注意力集中在一个选定的概念上,这反过来又刺激他们高估这个概念,而不是相关的概念。)”
根据第六段“For example, the pre-suasive strategy was employed in the late 1950s by the advertising firm Doyle Dane Bernbach to introduce the oddly shaped Volkswagen Beetle to a US market dominated by big, powerful, boat-like vehicles. The “We’re ugly but...” campaign strategically admitted to limitations in appearance before trumpeting(鼓吹)the auto’s strengths such as economy, reliability and simplicity.( 例如,上世纪50年代末,广告公司道尔•丹恩•伯恩巴赫(Doyle Dane Bernbach)采用了预先说服策略,将外形奇特的大众甲壳虫(Volkswagen Beetle)引入了美国市场,当时美国市场由大型、强劲、像船一样的汽车主导。
根据最后一段“With considerable success, practitioners of social influence have always featured persuasive elements — great praises, emotional pull, lastchance opportunities—in their appeals. Perhaps because of that success, they’ve mostly missed an accompanying truth. For maximum impact, it’s not only what you do; it’s also what you do just before you do what you do.( 在相当大的成功中,社会影响力的实践者总是在他们的呼吁中加入有说服力的元素——伟大的赞美、情感的牵引、最后的机会。
We’ve all been in that situation — you’ve sent a message and it marked “read”, yet you haven’t gotten a reply. What’s going on? Although being left on “read” can be puzzling, it’s also pretty common. ____16____ Here are some suggestions.
Assume the best. Remind yourself that the person is likely just occupied. Think about whether you actually know their schedule. There might be some time commitments you’re not familiar with. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response. ____17____ They set their phone aside to concentrate on work or studies. They unintentionally neglected to reply. Perhaps they thought about what to say but didn’t actually send a text.
Resist the temptation to double-text. ____18____ If you send many follow-up texts, it’ll be difficult for them to keep track and they may feel pressured. Let them have just one message to respond to — the other person will probably appreciate your tolerance.
Read over your previous messages. Check if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It’s fine if you review your message again and realize that it might have been a bit confusing — it happens! ____19____
____20____ Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don’t let it annoy or puzzle you. If you stop thinking about any alerts, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A Put your phone down.
B. Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C. They want to give you a more detailed reply but can’t do it at the moment.
D. You can stop the situation from bothering you until you hear back.
E. Think about why being left on “read” makes you annoyed or confused.
F. You might feel relieved when you find something that’s easy to misinterpret.
G. Let them have some room so they can get a chance to reply.
D 17. C 18. G 19. F 20. A
上文小标题“Resist the temptation to double-text.(抵制发两次短信的诱惑)”说明要抵制发两次短信的诱惑,下文“If you send many follow-up texts, it’ll be difficult for them to keep track and they may feel pressured.(如果你发很多条后续消息,他们很难跟进,还可能感到有压力)”解释了“不追问”的原因,空处需承接“不追问”的建议,进一步说明“不追问”的具体做法或目的。
上文“It’s fine if you review your message again and realize that it might have been a bit confusing — it happens!(如果你再回顾一下你的信息,发现它可能有点令人困惑,那也没关系——这种情况是会发生!)”
下文“Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don’t let it annoy or puzzle you. If you stop thinking about any alerts, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.(把它放在看不见的地方,让自己安心。不要让它打扰或迷惑你。如果你不再想任何提醒,你就能想出新的方法来打发时间)”可知,该段主要介绍了要放下手机,不要让它打扰或迷惑你。空处位于段首,为该段主旨句。所以A项“放下你的手机”符合语境,为该段主旨句。故选A。

Susan had a secret: she loved robots. She had helped her dad in his workshop and knew a lot about motors, but her friends didn’t know this.
One day, she heard Alex and Jacob talking about their robot, Robbie. They were preparing for a big competition but Robbie wasn’t working properly. Susan was surprised by their courage, as they always seemed unpopular among the boys. She felt bad for them and wanted to help.
On the school bus home, Susan sat behind Alex and Jacob, who were still trying to fix their robot. “This is impossible! The legs move before you press the switch and stop after you press the switch!” Alex said, looking at Robbie’s legs, which were not moving right. “The competition is only eight days away!” Jacob looked sad. He thought they were going to lose.
“Umm, how did you connect the wires from the switch?” Susan asked quietly over their shoulders. Alex turned and gave her a cautious look. Susan smiled and asked, “Did you connect the NO wire or the NC wire to the motor?” The boys stared at her as if she had just landed from Mars.
Susan gently took the robot and pointed out the wire connected to the motor. “Here’s the problem!” She explained that it was the NC wire. It means the circuit (电路) is Normally Closed. She then pulled a loose wire out of the robot and explained that it was the NO wire, which means Normally Open. “If you connect this wire instead, Robbie will walk when you press the switch.” Susan handed the robot back to Alex, who was staring at her with his mouth open.
“Change the wires and see,” she said before getting off the bus. Ten minutes later, her phone rang. It was Jacob: “Your idea worked, and we're wondering if you could come over and help improve our Robbie.” Susan smiled. She knew she had made the right choice.

Susan’s knowledge and skills were invaluable, and the boys were grateful for her help. As they worked , they chatted and laughed, forming a strong bond over their shared love of robots.
Paragraph 2. Finally, the competition day came, and the new team was ready. With Susan standing by their side, Alex and Jacob confidently presented Robbie to the judges. The robot moved smoothly and performed all its tasks with precision. The crowd cheered as Robbie demonstrated its abilities, and the judges were impressed by its design and functionality.

Maths phobia (恐惧症) is older than you might think. A hundred years ago German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad about the phenomenon and hoping to find ways to solve it, wrote a book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It.

With considerable success practitioners of social influence have always featured persuasive elements — great praises, emotional pull, lastchance opportunities—in their appeals.

A. Put your phone down.
B. Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C. They want to give you a more detailed reply but can’t do it at the moment.
