第一节
参考范文:
Dear Mr Smith,
I'm excited to hear that you are planning to set up an elective course based on the English
language.I'd like to recommend a course on English public speaking and debate.
In the first place, this course would be highly beneficial for students like me who want to
improve their critical thinking and communication skills.Public speaking helps build
confidence, while debate encourages logical reasoning and teamwork.Additionally, mastering
these skills is valuable for future academic and career opportunities.
Thank you for considering my suggestion.I'm looking forward to your exciting course!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
参考范文:
I whispered to Sam,"Go easy with him. This is a big step for him."She looked in my
eyes, and I knew she understood. She slowly got up from her spot and went over to William.
She stood halfway for a moment, and their eyes locked on one another.William smiled, and
Sam walked a few steps closer. He giggled again, and she did the same. This continued until
Sam had reached his side. Then came a most amazing scene:The two of them sat in silence,
with Sam's head nestled in William's lap.William slowly touched her fur, like two old
friends. When the play time came to an end,William kissed Sam on her head, and she licked
his face.
The next weekend,we saw an obvious change in William. He had begun speaking during
the week.He would leave their room several times to the yard, each time walking and sitting
on his own.He allowed staff members to talk to him.As the children headed to the yard for
playing games,he would join them.Soon it was time for William and his mother to leave the
shelter to start their new life.On the last day,William's mother told me that thanks to the
healing from Sam's love,William was adjusting well to his new school and their new
apartment.I was more than proud of Sam.

mornings a week to weed and water to create the 380-foot-long garden. What began as a
personal act has grown into a community-supported habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds.
At first the area was completely blocked with weeds and electrical equipment which were
thrown away.Massa determined to clear the trash and bring in water to repurpose the land.
She contacted the neighbors and city officials to get permission to stop weeding rudely that
harmed the native plants.
After winter rains the next year, wildflower seeds (which she planted were coming
up.It showed the soil (can support the growth of plants.Because of the donations and
a $500 fund,she could plant over 400 native species,including sage,monkey flowers,and
milkweeds, which are important for endangered monarch butterflies.
The work wasn't easy.In summer, high temperatures killed half the plants,so they
needed to be replanted.Massa often worked alone, though the neighbors and her young son
offered help to her occasionally. She stressed that creating a native garden demands long-time
care,"If you don't water, weed, and maintain it,you might as well throw plants in the trash
bin”
Now in its third spring, this area is filled with color and life.Massa aims to encourage
the reuse of deserted spaces but reminds that meaningful change doesn't happen overnight.
For Massa, the garden is more than beauty-it's a statement."People here don't know native
plants,"she said "This sbows their valuefor wildlife, for us,for the future."

Researchers from Norwegian University of Science and Technology have looked at the
connection between physical activity and brain health..The findings show that the brain
definitely benefits from physical activity.
The research evaluated evidence from both animal and human studies. It points out that
our body mechanisms (like blood flow, immune function, brain plasticity, and the
release of protective chemicals in the blood will weaken with age, which plays an important
role in the development of dementia ()However,physical activity can be one effective
way to help slow down the process, reducing the risk of dementia and promote healthy brain
aging.
Today, the recommendation is at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity(中等强度)or
75 minutes of high intensity each week.Fully 50%to 70%of the population does not manage
today's activity recommendations.
However,based on the reality,Atefe R.Tari,one of the researchers,suggested that
microtraining (going from no activity to adding brief strength training into everyday life)be
included in the recommendations from Norwegian health authorities. He noted that exercising
much less than what the current recommendations can provide great benefits-as long as the
intensity of the training is high.
"Our review shows that even small amounts of high-intensity activity-similar to fast
walking where you can't sing-can reduce the risk of dementia by up to 40%.A little is better
than nothing. We believe it's time for health authorities to make some adjustments on how
important exercise is for the brain-it may be what encourages people to get started,"says
Tari.
In a commentary in Nature Medicine,American researchers even argued that public
guidelines need to be updated. As life expectancy increases, dementia is becoming a major
public health challenge.Since there is still no cure, prevention is crucial."Exercise is cheap,
accessible and has no side effects. It should be considered a first-line measure to preserve brain
health,"Tari says.
28.What is the main finding of the research?
A.Regular physical activity helps cure dementia.
B.It's difficult to follow exercise recommendations.
C.High-intensity exercise is less effective for health.
D.Exercise protects aging brains against dementia.
29.What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.How exercise influences brain health.
B.Possible risks of developing dementis.
C.Effects exercise has on animals and humans.
D.Why our body mechanisms begin to weaken.
【高二英语第5页(共10页)】
30.Why does Tari suggest microtraining?
A.Most people prefer exercising in groups.
B.It is more achievable for ordinary people.
C.It is more enjoyable than regular exercise.
D.Current recommendations are unscientific.
31.What is American researchers'attitude toward microtraining?
A.Doubtful.
B.Curious.
C.Supportive.
D.Disapproving.

In an analysis of 16 cities around the world, those that saw the biggest temperature rises
over the years also had more rat complaints over time, researchers reported in Science
Advances.
Jonathan Richardson,a researcher of the University of Richmond in Virginia, together
with his team, gathered records of complaints made about rats over an average of 12 years
from 13 US cities,as well as Toronto,Tokyo and Amsterdam. They found that among
factors including levels of urbanization(城市化),economic development, population growth
and average temperatures, the strongest one associated with a faster rat race was the amount a
city's temperature had increased.
"The unseasonably warm winters of climate change,"Richardson says."probably buy
rats extra time outdoors. An extra week or two foraging (outdoors...that's,in some
cases, adequate for a rat to reproduce one more time"Warming weather also means fewer
opportunities to control rat populations,.“There used to be a rodent(啮齿动物)season:Rats
sought shelter indoors in winter with lower birth rates, allowing professionals take advantage
of the chance to control Now it's all year round,"says Bobby Corrigan,a rodentologist.
"When humans and rats share space, there are really a variety of risks coming along,"
says Niamh Quinn,a human-wildlife interactions advisor at the University of California
Agriculture and Natural Resources in Irvine.Rats not only make people jump and scream, but
also chew up car wiring and eat crops and gardens.Their wastes pollute food that they get
into, and they can spread diseases. They cause around 27 billion dollars in damage each year
in the United States, and the world spends 500 million dollars per year fighting a losing battle
against the creature.Higher temperatures may make matters worse.
"At some point there's going to be hopefully not,but potentially the perfect storm,
where we have all these increasing population, all these rodents but not enough tools in our
toolbox to manage them,"said Bobby.
32.What mainly contributes to the rise in rat populations in cities?
A.The design of city structures.
B.Increase in city temperatures.
C.The shortening of rodent seasons.
D.Improved reporting of rat complaints.

Below are four simple steps that you can take to realize your dream.

real happiness comes from listening to your inner voice.36 For example, ask yourself
"What activities really win my heart?"or "What problems do I feel passionate about solving?"

39Whether starting or succeeding, believing in your choice makes the difference between
a life lived fully and one filled with regrets.
Challenges are unavoidable, but persistence (turns effort into good results.Great
