Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·浙江宁波·期中)“Henry! Knock it off! If you do that one more time, I’m going to throw you out of this boat,” warned Cameron angrily.
“Yeah, right,” said Henry and half-heartedly rowed the boat up the river. Henry and Cameron were chosen to be partners, but they certainly weren’t friends. Cameron looked down on Henry and spent his time at summer camp keeping away from him. Henry never followed the rules, and that drove Cameron crazy.
Cameron hated the fact that the boat ride was at least 5 miles long. Just then Cameron felt some small drops of water again on his neck.
“Henry!” shouted Cameron loudly. “I said to leave me alone.”
“I’m not doing anything!” answered Henry coolly. “If you look up, you will see that Mother Nature is touching you with water.”
Sure enough, when Cameron looked up, he could see light rain coming down. Things got quiet in the boat after that. Before long, the small drops turned into large ones, and thunder and lightning began racing across the sky. Cameron didn’t know what to do. All he remembered was hearing stories about never to be on the water during a lightning storm.
There was nothing in sight. Where could they get shelter? At that moment, Henry took over. He guided Cameron to control the boat towards some small wooden houses up ahead. By the time they reached the houses, they were all wet. Lightning continued to flash and they took shelter in the house.

Passage 3
(24-25九年级上·浙江宁波·期中)“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with Father standing on one side, and I on the other side.
We were both in great anger. “Jack! Never set foot in this house again!” shouted Father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street.
The street lights were shining, causing my feeling of sadness. I walked about, knowing nowhere to go.
A young father who held a child in his arm walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree (无忧无虑).
But now…I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because Dad is getting old. We are just like two persons coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened. I walked in the streets. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. I walked on. There were fewer and fewer people on the streets. When I finally reached the apartment block in which I lived, I saw that light was still on.
I thought to myself, “Is father waiting for me or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, Dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps.
All the lights were off except Father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret (后悔). However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking (给……盖被子) me in while I am sleeping. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that iron door that I have imagined between us did not exist at all. Love—it is second to none.

Passage 2
(24-25九年级上·贵州黔南·期中)Yesterday, I read a report on fruit-picking robots. As I heard about the pricey robotic arms of these machines, I was filled with something like sadness. Our children and grandchildren, I’m afraid, will not be able to understand how our food is grown. Nor will they be able to experience the fun of fruit-picking.
I once spent a few weeks on a farm in New Zealand. There, I met about 50 apple-pickers from Vanuatu. At night, we listened to pop music and washed our clothes as they told me about their experiences of picking pineapples and peaches. Life on the farm was hard. The rooms were small and dark. There was nothing in them but a kettle (水壶) and a shower. However, the trip left me with many good memories.
When my son was little, I used to cycle him half an hour out of town to a farm every few weeks. There, we could pick strawberries. He loved it. He was excited about the smell of the plants, the feel of the soil (土壤) and the art of guessing which piece of fruit had the potential to be the most delicious. And he saw where our fruit came from. I wanted him to understand the effort and energy (努力和精力) during the process of producing food.
Doorstep deliveries and washed and sliced (切好的) salad vegetables have already started to destroy (毁坏) our understanding of how our food is grown and what it looks like. Robotic fruit-pickers, I fear, will be just another step in this direction. I’m afraid that we are making the whole act of eating a hands-off experience. Where is, then, the fun of it?

Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·浙江杭州·期中)
Ms. Smith was walking her dog, Lucky, past our yard.
I touched Lucky gently. “You OK, Lucky? You were barking your head off half the afternoon.” Ms. Smith raised her eyebrows (眉毛). “Really? I hope Lucky didn’t trouble you.” I shook my head. “No, I just noticed it because he usually doesn’t bark much.”
The next day, while I was playing the piano, Lucky barked again. I checked but found nothing. I called Ms. Smith at work. She came and took Lucky to the animal doctor. After dinner, Ms. Smith stopped by our house. “Lucky is fine. I had the animal doctor check him out. He said Lucky probably misses Leo.” Ms. Smith’s son, Leo, had started college in September. “Lucky still sleeps in Leo’s bedroom every night. He even looks under the covers for Leo. I’ll have the TV on tomorrow, which should help.”
When I got off the bus the next day, I could hear it loud and clear: Lucky’s barking. After calling Ms. Smith, I look Lucky for a walk. We walked around the park three times before the dog calmed down. He kept nuzzling (蹭) my hand. “What’s going on?” I asked. “I wish I could understand you. Missing Leo isn’t your only problem, or you would bark all the time. What are you trying to say, Lucky?” Suddenly, I remembered that I used to see him and Leo playing in their yard every day when I’d get off the bus. “You’re used to chasing (追赶) that ball, aren’t you? Last year on their family trip to his uncle’s house for Christmas, he had forgotten the bag with the toiletries (化妆品) in it. So he had to borrow from his cousins who weren’t so happy to share, and Jon was not pleased that his hair smelled like strawberries all week.

Jon’s parents listened quietly. They were not unhappy at him for not bringing pajamas. They were not even angry that he had gone through his brother’s bag. They were sad that Jon didn’t talk to them about his problem first. They hugged him and told him everything would be just fine.
Morning came, and the family stood around the Christmas tree. Everyone was in pajamas except Jon. His uncle asked the family to come together for a photo. Jon felt terrible.
“Just a minute,” Jon’s mother said. “Before we take the Christmas photo, I have a special gift for Jon. Open this, honey.”
Jon looked at his mother curiously. They never opened presents before the photo. She smiled at him and said, “Go ahead, it’ll all be okay.”

(24-25九年级上·浙江杭州·期中)Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor (辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil (惹人厌的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered “evil”? Over the next several months, I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.
But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.
When the teacher came, I encouraged Chip to express his feelings. He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn’t think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn’t hate him at all and, actually, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip’s behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.
I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feelings.
As I was speaking to him, his whole body came to rest on my right hand next to his heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I’m pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.

1.Jack felt ________while walking alone on the streets.

A.She was filled with something like happiness.
B.She was filled with something like anger.

B.see where the fruit comes from
C.pick strawberries

(24-25九年级上·浙江杭州·期中)Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor (辅导员). It was shocking to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil (惹人厌的) boy.
