I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what was inside. There was a small white dog lying still! “Wow! A dog?” I hugged my father happily. “Thank you, Dad. This is the best gift I have ever got.”
“Jessica, it is Po, a robotic dog,” my father said.
“A robotic dog?” I said in surprise because it was so lifelike. I looked closely for a while and found that it was really a robotic dog! “Dad, it’s so cool!”
Dad placed it on the floor and pressed the tiny power button (按钮). Then the dog came to life. It stood up, opened its eyes and looked into me. I touched its head gently, then it lifted its ears and moved its tail back and forward. When I stopped, it put its nose against my hand.
Even after it was trained, its actions were sometimes unexpected. Sometimes, when I asked it to sit or lie down, it would simply bark at me, just like a real dog. So he practiced hard and spent more time reading the classics and poems again to get ready for the imperial examination, or keju. It showed us that Gao always took a positive attitude (积极的态度) to different problems and luckily, he also met some good people to help him. In the end, Gao became a great army leader and led his army to win a big fight.

Passage 8
(24-25九年级上·陕西咸阳·期中)
I am not interested in making the New Year’s decisions. But this year, there came a decisive moment. It came when my adult children headed back to their homes. There was a sadness I felt. But at that moment I realized that something in me needed to change. So I asked myself, “What is truly good in your life?”
What is good is my relationships with my children, but not only those relationships. I find joy in nature and connections with close friends and family. I love doing photography and writing and teaching myself piano.
Whatever was missing from my life, at the end of last year, I knew about the parts that worked. As winter ended and the visiting children prepared to leave, I looked to the future.
I think of my friend, Lisa, who in May lost her husband of 30 years, and who found herself on New Year’s Eve with no one to be with. Her aloneness was lasting in that turning-point moment, but her sadness was momentary (短暂的). “I realized I had a choice (选择),” she told me. Instead of giving way to loneliness, she chose to find something meaningful to do. We humans can become bored with defeat (失败). We know something is just the other side. Like a new year, I have two choices. I can brand myself as the long-suffering mother who never thought of how to live on after her children left. Or I can take to the piano in the center of the house each day and practice Ode to Joy with one hand until such time as I feel ready to play with two.
25. According to the first two paragraphs, the writer would probably ________.

Passage 11
(2024·江苏苏州·中考真题)
Auggie’s Story
Sleep
I’d been reading for over an hour and sleep still didn’t come. It was almost two a. m. Everyone else was asleep. I had my flashlight (手电筒) on under the sleeping bag. Maybe the light was why I couldn’t sleep, but I was too afraid to turn it off. What had happened kept coming back to my mind.

It’s so strange how that can be, how you could have a night that’s the worst in your life, but to everybody else it’s just a usual night.
Amos, Miles and Henry brought us back to our seats. Then they returned to their own seats. In a way, everything was exactly as we had left it. The sky was the same. The movie was the same. Everyone’s faces were the same. Mine was the same.

Just like Jack was there for you. And Amos. And those other kids.”
“Oh yeah, Miles and Henry,” I answered. “They were amazing, too. It’s very strange because Miles and Henry haven’t even really been very nice to me at all during the year.”

A. keep her New Year’s resolutions
B. continue to lose herself in loneliness
C. change her life by doing what she likes
D. go to live with one of her adult children
26. The writer mentioned her friend Lisa to show ________.
A. there are people with worse lives than herself
B. there are choices even when life is difficult
C. being on one’s own has a big influence on others
D. the importance of family members on New Year’s Eve
27. How does the writer feel about her future?
A. Uncertain. B. Terrible. C. Worried. D. Hopeful.

As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “Maybe he is having a bad day.” Later I knew that Bob lost his wife in a car accident.
