B Back in the 1990s, Henry Rotich who is from Kenya, did not know much about China, with his best connection to the country being a teakettle made in Shanghai that was owned by his grandmother. Nevertheless, he applied to study in China when an opportunity presented itself in 1998. Luckily, he got the chance to come to China to pursue his master’s degree in chemistry at the same year. And his main challenge at that time was learning the language. However, he could communicate with people easily by simple Chinese after a month. “During my travels around China as a student, I found people very friendly and helpful. That is how I came to learn their language fast.” “Learning language and culture depends on one’s mindset as well as the opportunity to live in an environment where the language is used daily,” Rotich said. He believes that China’s scholarship program for African students to study in China has been instrumental in helping young Africans learn Chinese and immerse (沉浸) themselves in the culture. To complete his chemistry studies, Rotich spent eight years in China. Asked about the benefits of studying in the country, Rotich, who is married to a Chinese woman, quipped (打趣) that he came back to Kenya with “three degrees” in the same period it would take others to get just two degrees. “The first degree is my wife, the second one is my master’s and finally, my PhD,” he said proudly. Rotich said different countries and people should concentrate on their cultural similarities. He has noted many similarities between the Chinese and Kenyan cultures, and this has helped him appreciate the Chinese way of life. The similarities include respect for the elderly, families gathering during special festivals, and good neighborliness. As chairman of the Kenya-China Alumni Association for Kenyan students who studied in China, Rotich praised the role played by Chinese scholarships in promoting cultural exchanges between the two countries. 24. Challenges Henry Rotich met in China B. Cultural cooperation between China and Kenya C. Henry Rotich’s studying in China — a wise choice D. Henry Rotich’s working experience in China — a magic story C I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. It was full of ideas that were new to me, so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book. It spoke to me and brought me into a world of philosophy (哲学). That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college. Nothing kills the love for philosophy faster than people who think they understand Foucault, Baudrillard, or Confucius better than you — and then try to explain them. Eric Weiner’s The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers reawakened my love for philosophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience philosophy. Weiner starts each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each philosopher’s work in the context (背景) of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have no regrets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about understanding philosophy, is a book about learning to use philosophy to improve a life. He makes philosophical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experiences, and he does so with plenty of humor. Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most important philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding (解读) their messages and adding his own interpretation. The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and gradually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear: Weiner wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book. I encourage you to take his offer. It’s worth your time, even if time is something we don’t have a lot of. 28. Who opened the door to philosophy for the author? A. Foucault. B. Eric Weiner. C. Jostein Gaarder. D. A college teacher. 29. Why does the author list great philosophers in paragraph 4? A. To compare Weiner with them. B. To give examples of great works. C. To praise their writing skills. D. To help readers understand Weiner’s book. 30. What does the author like about The Socrates Express? A. Its views on history are well-presented. B Its ideas can be applied to daily life. C. It includes comments from readers. D. It leaves an open ending. 31. What does the author think of Weiner’s book? A. Objective and plain. B. Daring and ambitious. C. Serious and hard to follow. D. Humorous and straightforward. D People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. Most beaches don't have ramps (坡道) or special walkways to allow disabled visitors to move around easily, or to get in and out of the sea safely. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It's called Seatrac. Seatrac is a system that was designed to solve this problem. Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can help anyone who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women. The chair is operated by remote control. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top of the ramp. It's even possible to take a shower in the Seatrac chair after going for a swim. Seatrac was invented and developed by Mr. Fotiou, a professor and his partners at Greek university. They designed the system and in time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems. The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run.A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar powered. It doesn't require outside power, and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when swimming season ends. This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, and Latvia. The Seatrac service in Greece is gratis to tourists. The Greek government has helped pay for it and hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country. 32. How can a disabled man in a wheelchair get into the water through Seatrac? A. He rides the chair of the system into the sea. B. He wheels his wheelchair into the sea by himself. C. The moving ramp carries his wheelchair into the sea. D. The staff of the Seatrac drives him to the sea in a chair. 33. What do we know about the Seatrac system? A. It needs recharging regularly. B. It is automatic and portable. C. It is easy to operate and manage. D. It is only intended for disabled persons. 34. What does the underlined"gratis"mean in the last paragraph? A. Accessible. B. Profitable. C. First-class. D. Cost-free. 35. What is the best title of the text? A. Seatrac: Helping Wheelchair Users Enjoy the Sea B. TOBEA:A New Company Bringing Joy to Tourists C. Their mail carrier, Seana Green, makes it a point to go out of her way and chat with folks whenever possible. Although she's had this job for 15 years, she didn't start the route where Marilyn Schmidt lives until about four or five years ago. Marilyn, who recently turned 90-year-old, is just one of the many people that Seana has befriended over the years. The two of them love to chat just about every other day. This is made easier by the fact that Seana will park her vehicle, get out, and deliver mail on foot. Seana walks through the neighborhood, and she does more than just deliver the mail. “I think of them as family,” Seana said. “A lot of them. I really do.” There is an appreciation between the mail lady and residents. That's why, when she hadn't seen Marilyn in quite some time, she grew concerned. “I didn't see her on Thursday, and I didn't see her on Friday,” Seana recalled. “And when I showed up on Saturday and she wasn't on the porch (门廊) and the mail was like, just hanging out of her box. and I shouted through the screen door.” At first, Seana couldn't hear anything coming from inside the home. B. Its ideas can be applied to daily life. C. It includes comments from readers. D. It leaves an open ending. 31. What does the author think of Weiner’s book? A. Objective and plain. B. Daring and ambitious. C. Serious and hard to follow. D. Soon enough though. The quiet sound of Marilyn calling out for help became clear. Seana said that her voice sounded weak almost “like a kitten meowing (喵喵叫)”. 注意; 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Seana was so frightened that she rushed into the room. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Two weeks later, Marilyn was able to celebrate her 90th birthday at the hospital. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Seana was so frightened that she rushed into the room. Sure enough, this sweet lady was lying in the kitchen on the floor. It turned out that she had fallen down and had been lying there for days. Seana was shocked and heart-broken. She called 911 immediately, and Marilyn was quickly taken to hospital. After urgent medical treatment, Marilyn was saved. The doctor said that she was found and rescued just in time. Had it been a little later, the old woman would have died. Two weeks later, Marilyn was able to celebrate her 90th birthday at the hospital. A chocolate ice cream cake and large, colorful birthday balloons were around her. Naturally, friends like Seana were there to join in on the celebration. People stood around 90-year-old Marilyn who was smiling in a hospital bed, celebrating her birthday. Marilyn said, “I am excited that Seana could be there to celebrate my birthday. She saved my life and we got to know each other better.” The scene moved her to tears. 摔倒:fall down/fallen over/have a fall ②.参加:join in /take part in ③.使……感动:moved /touched 情绪类 ①.震惊的:shocked / astonished / surprised ②.激动的:excited / agitated/ thrilled 【点睛】[高分句型1].
